CNN —Andrew Holmes’ images of trucks on Californian highways are sun-drenched, saturated and sharp. Now, Holmes’ works have been brought together in a book — “Gas Tank City” (Circa Press) — alongside a show of the same name at London’s Architectural Association (AA). The drawings that make up the "Gas Tank City" book and exhibition celebrate every inch of the classic American truck, particularly the iconic Kenworth model. While the words “hyperreal” and “photorealistic” are used to describe his work, Holmes points out that the drawings are “completely unlike” photographic images. Together, “Gas Tank City” creates a portrait of life on the road, detached from specificities of time and place.

CNN —Former Hungarian fencer László Csongrádi has been left so distraught by the theft of his Olympic gold medal that he has offered to leave it to the thief in his will if it is returned. Csongrádi, 65, won the Olympic gold in the men’s team sabre competition at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. “For two weeks, I can’t calm down and be happy because everything reminds me of my stolen Olympic gold medal,” Csongrádi told Hungary’s Sportal website. “He could have taken other important things, but for some reason (the medal) was all he was interested in,” he added. “The thief touched many things, many fingerprints were left behind, but there is nothing to identify them.

CNN —Astronomers have observed a massive pair of jets releasing from a supermassive black hole 7.5 billion light-years from Earth. The megastructure spans 23 million light-years in length, making these black hole jets the largest ever seen, according to new research. Black hole jets can accelerate radiation and particles close to the speed of light, causing them to glow in wavelengths visible to radio telescopes. The massive black hole jets could help answer both. Martijn Oei (pictured), lead author of the new study, and his colleagues will continue their search for massive black hole jets.

The asteroid, dubbed 2024 PT5, is 33 feet long — roughly equivalent to a standard school bus. The asteroid is expected to enter Earth’s orbit Sunday and lurk there until Nov. 25, just over 56 days, Marcos said. Astronomers in Arizona spotted a different visiting mini-moon — a tiny asteroid named 2020 CD3 — in Earth’s orbit in February 2020. “A short mini-moon episode may last hours, days, weeks or a few months, and the affected object does not complete one revolution around Earth,” he said in an email. An early warning system for asteroids known as ATLAS (short for Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System) discovered 2024 PT5 in early August.

Earth is about to have a temporary ‘mini-moon’

But as a mini-moon, Asteroid 2024 PT5 isn’t in any danger of colliding with Earth now or over the next few decades, de la Fuente Marcos said. Asteroid 2020 CD3 is considered a long-capture mini-moon, while the newly detected Asteroid 2024 PT5 is a short-capture one. Short mini-moon events can occur several times per decade, but long mini-moon events are rare, and only occur every 10 or 20 years, de la Fuente Marcos said. “In order to become a mini-moon, an incoming body has to approach Earth slowly at close range,” de la Fuente Marcos said. After 56.6 days, the sun’s gravitational pull will bring Asteroid 2024 PT5 back into its normal orbit.

His new home is a notorious federal jail in New York City known for extreme violence and abominable medical care. Still, the conditions are horrid across the facility, according to interviews with more than a half-dozen defense lawyers and a review of court documents. “The agency as a whole has failed to assist MDC Brooklyn with the staffing crisis, hence allowing MDC Brooklyn to fail,” the union head, Rhonda Barnwell, wrote in a memo to Bureau of Prisons officials in June 2023. "That is why, earlier this year, the director appointed an Urgent Action Team to take a holistic look at the challenges at MDC Brooklyn," the spokesman added. In a Tuesday interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer, Siemens USA CEO Barbara Humpton detailed how her company's digital twin program lets builders test models virtually before starting production. Based in Germany, Siemens develops hardware and software for several industries like electrical infrastructure and transportation, as well as digital twin technology for manufacturing facilities. Humpton said digital twins produce a "digital representation of any physical object" and incorporate the laws of physics. Humpton highlighted the company's "smart infrastructure" initiative, which she said is Siemens USA's largest and fastest-growing business. Smart infrastructure technology enables widespread electrification and data center creation, she said.

AdvertisementHere are some mistakes you may be making while photographing the moon and how to fix them, according to two professional astrophotographers. Mistake 1: Taking photos at the wrong timeJon Carmichael captured the moon during a lunar eclipse. The silver lining is you can get better detail because you're shooting through less atmosphere and the photos will be clearer. Taking photos closer to sunset gives you more lighting compared to later at night, which will make taking a cellphone picture easier. "If you're shooting in any kind of auto setting, then you're making the camera decide for you," Carmichael said.

Here’s what we know – and don’t – about China’s space plane. The term “space plane” often evokes NASA’s Space Shuttle, which flew 135 missions from 1981 to 2011, carrying astronauts into orbit and helping to construct the International Space Station. Hulton Archive/Getty ImagesWhat do we know about China’s space plane program? China’s space plane development comes as a growing number of countries are paying attention to the deepening connections between security on Earth and in space – and vying for so-called counterspace technologies with the potential to disrupt or even destroy adversaries’ assets in space. But observers have also raised questions about the activities of the space plane, including its own deployment of multiple small satellites.

It wasn’t until Trump’s closing statement that he tried to effectively pin Vice President Kamala Harris to President Joe Biden’s administration. Not only did Trump fail to connect Harris more directly with the Biden years, but so did the questions. And Harris certainly took advantage of every opportunity to turn many of the questions directed at her or the Biden-Harris administration back on Trump. And Harris also benefited because the moderators didn’t always follow up with her when she didn’t answer their questions directly. (Again, Trump didn’t acknowledge any failures in his administration other than the people he fired, and Harris didn’t seem to hug the Biden-Harris record very much.)

Harris baited Trump, starting by distracting Trump from talking about his favorite issue of immigration by getting him stewing about crowd size. Harris talked about how the Wharton School of Finance, Trump's beloved alma mater, has published research questioning his economic plans. He clearly seemed annoyed at the ABC News debate moderators who repeatedly interrupted the debate to fact-check his false claims.
