Traditionally Republicans have been more significant friends of the oil and gas industry. Increasing domestic oil production would theoretically achieve several goals for the new administration: increase domestic economic activity and employment, increase domestic energy security, and lower oil and gas prices. Interestingly, oil and gas production in the United States right now, the world's largest producer, has never been higher, and oil and gas prices, while well above pre-COVID levels, have stabilized. The incoming Trump administration will likely reduce federal regulations on drilling, pipeline development, and environmental protections that limit the expansion of oil and gas projects. This infrastructure investment benefits the oil services industry by enabling more accessible transport and new development projects, which Biden canceled.

Republican Bernie Moreno, a Colombian immigrant who became a high-profile Cleveland car dealer, has unseated Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, NBC News projects. Republicans flipped another Democratic-held seat in a state Trump carried easily, West Virginia, on Tuesday and were aiming to capture another in Montana. Moreno’s victory also ends, for now, the 50-year political career of Brown, first elected as a state representative in the post-Watergate era. For decades Brown had fashioned himself as an unapologetic liberal and progressive tightly aligned with working-class voters, particularly organized labor. The messaging strategy, rooted in Trump’s Buckeye State popularity, bolstered Moreno even as Brown and the Democrats sought to exploit his shortcomings.

Trump's plan would reduce average after-tax incomes by almost 3%, according to the tax think tank. "If we get tariffs, we will pass those tariff costs back to the consumer," Daniele said in September. A back-of-the-envelope calculation suggests a 10% across-the-board tariff would be roughly equivalent to a $320 billion tax on consumers, Cross said. "The administration could take tariff revenue and redistribute to households via tax cuts in some form or another," explained Pugliese of Wells Fargo. However, the typical U.S. household would still lose $2,600 a year from Trump's tariff plan, even after accounting for an extension of the 2017 tax cuts, according to an analysis by the Peterson Institute for International Economics.

Novo Nordisk on Wednesday reported third quarter earnings broadly in line with expectations and narrowed its 2024 full-year growth guidance. The Danish pharmaceutical giant said that its net profit in the third quarter hit 27.3 billion Danish kroner ($3.92 billion), above an LSEG aggregate estimate of 26.95 billion Danish kroner. EBIT — earnings before tax and income — came to 33.8 billion Danish kroner, also just above the LSEG forecast of 33.51 billion Danish kroner. The guidance reflected the company's expectations for sales growth in North America and internationally, which is largely driven by volume growth of treatments based on Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), Novo Nordisk said. Novo Nordisk added that it was investing in capacity both internally and externally to increase supply in the short- and long-term.

Brian Snyder | ReutersDETROIT — Stock prices of foreign automakers, including Chinese and German manufacturers, fell sharply on Wednesday amid concerns the U.S. will hike tariffs on imported vehicles under President-elect Donald Trump. European-traded shares of BMW and Mercedes-Benz were off around 6.5%, while Porsche was down by 4.9% and Volkswagen declined 4.3%. Trump has repeatedly said he will increase tariffs on many products, including new cars and trucks from China, Europe and Mexico, where many automakers, including Europeans, have established manufacturing hubs. U.S.-traded shares of Japanese automakers Toyota Motor and Honda Motor also were down during intraday trading by roughly 1% and 9%, respectively. However, they still heavily rely on imports from other countries, including Mexico, to meet U.S. consumer demand.

Operating EBITDA of $857 million in the quarter came in ahead of the $818 million consensus, according to FactSet. DuPont's performance on profitability metrics shined, with the better-than-expected operating EBITDA and earnings results for the quarter compounded by an increase to management's full-year outlook on both metrics. Quarterly results Another reason to look past the light water-and-protection sales: Operating margins at both of the core business units were ahead of expectations. For the electronics-and-industrial segment, management said operating EBITDA was helped, in part, by increased volume gains along with savings from productivity and restructuring actions. CNN —Incendiary devices that ignited in Germany and the United Kingdom in July were part of a covert Russian operation that aimed to start fires aboard cargo and passenger flights heading to the US and Canada, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported Monday, citing Western security officials. In July, device explosions at DHL logistics hubs in Leipzig, Germany, and Birmingham, UK, kickstarted a race to find the suspects, WSJ reported. When the WSJ asked Russia for comment about the suspected Russian plot, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov denied the allegations. “We have never heard any official accusations” of Russian involvement, adding: “These are traditional unsubstantiated insinuations from the media.”” He said according to WSJ. It was dealt with by staff and the local fire brigade at the time and there were no reports of any injuries or significant damage caused,” the spokesperson said.

Key ports on Canada's West Coast, including its largest container port in Vancouver and the Port of Prince Rupert, were shut down by a labor strike on Monday. According to the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, $800 million in trade flows through West Coast ports every day. Montreal processes 40% of all East Coast container traffic. Approximately $572 million in container trade arrives daily in the U.S. from Canada, according to U.S. Census data. A temporary loss of the Canadian West Coast trade gateway could push carriers to discharge import cargo along the already strained U.S. West Coast, said Alan Baer, CEO of OL USA, further increasing the dwell time of containers and elongating overall transits.
