Asia markets rise after Fed holds rates

Seoul, South Korea ranked in the top three of the fastest growing destination for digital nomads. Asia markets strengthened as investors took comfort from the U.S. Federal Reserve's decision to leave its benchmark interest rates unchanged, while parsing inflation data from South Korea. The Fed on Wednesday again held rates steady amid signs of economic growth, while labor market conditions and inflation remain above the central bank's target. The decision also included an upgrade to the Fed's general assessment of the economy. Data from South Korea showed consumer prices accelerated for the third straight month in October, with the CPI rising 3.8% year-on-year.

Maggie Peddicord and her boyfriend, Joseph, bought a school bus and traveled in it for one year. To fund their journey and bus expenses, they both started working on the handiwork app Taskrabbit. Before I started on Taskrabbit, I worked as a research assistant at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Once we moved in and started traveling, it cost about $500 a month for gas and other repairs and about $250 a month for groceries. Joseph networked with Taskrabbit clients by finding people who might be interested in selling or purchasing a yacht one day.

To the police in Spain, the artifacts possessed an ancient and golden allure. The five individuals were arrested and charged with money laundering, and the national police released images and video of the stolen items, saying that their value was around 60 million euros, or $64 million. But two experts in Greco-Scythian artifacts said in interviews that the items seized are most likely modern imitations of those crafted by ancient Greeks for Scythian nomads who, in the 4th century B.C., traversed what is now Ukraine and southern Russia. Leonid Babenko, an archaeologist at the M.F. Sumtsov Kharkiv Historical Museum in Kharkiv, Ukraine, said in an email that the items were “clumsy fakes” and had most likely been created for private collectors.

Insider Today: A Google loophole exposed

This post originally appeared in the Insider Today newsletter. In today's big story, we're looking at how a Google loophole brings advertisements for illegal drugs hosted on defaced government websites to the top of search results. Previously, that wasn't an issue since these web pages never appeared in Google searches because website owners restricted Google from indexing them. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe result is people using internal search functions to create webpages advertising drugs on websites viewed as trustworthy by Google. The Punan people of the island of Borneo were once rumored to have tails, so elusive did they seem to their neighbors in the 19th century. Over decades, the Indonesian government stripped the Punan of their ancestral lands and encouraged them, sometimes forcibly, to settle in ready-built villages. By the 1990s, anthropologists believed that the group’s traditional hunter-gatherer lifestyle had vanished. In 2002, a census of the Punan in eastern Borneo focused only on the villages, because so few nomads were thought to exist. But with funding from the National Science Foundation, the scientists made contact with the nomadic group in 2018, and began collecting data with the aim of ensuring their health and welfare.

Hawaii residents, like Puerto Ricans, who faced disasters before them, are not asking to be saved. They ask only to be allowed to help themselves in the face of failing emergency services and federal aid. But the entrenched vulnerabilities produced by colonialism are not so easily overcome. For example, some residents have been begging tourists to stay away as the community recovers. It will only worsen if weeks of absent federal aid turn into months of bureaucratic labyrinths and endless red tape, as has happened so often.

The largest island, Tenerife, received 4% more tourists in June than in the pre-pandemic 2019. But there were 22% fewer Germans, a clear sign of how the energy crisis and economic woes have weighed on travel decisions. Meanwhile, hotels in traditional hotspots for German tourists, such as the town of Puerto de la Cruz in northern Tenerife, are now filling up with "weather tourists". This year, 18% fewer Germans went on summer holidays than in 2019, according to Germany's tourism industry group DRV. According to Spanish official data, in the first half of 2023, 14% fewer Germans visited Tenerife than in 2019.

CNN —When John Flores and Michael Leitz were looking for a home in which to spend the next stage of their lives, they realized that where they lived in San Francisco was too expensive. Instead, they began looking further afield – eventually buying a beautiful 120-year-old, three-story home in rural Spain for less than $50,000. Finding the right place and relocating to another country was by no means easy for Flores and Leitz. As is often the case in rural Spain, many records had been lost over the years. “We bought the most beautiful antique rural Spanish furniture there.”Work to renovate the house took about six months, but that followed the considerable time taken to get building permission from local authorities.

Shopify is going to extreme lengths to stop its workers from attending pointless meetings. This push to keep workers out of meetings is to free up time so they can, according to the company's COO, "get shit done." But here's the thing about meetings, even "pointless" ones, and especially for a company with a lot of remote workers like Shopify: they give us an opportunity to chat. Watercoolers are hard to recreate in virtual form, but if they're going to be anywhere, it's in scheduled videocalls — in other words, meetings. Better mental health has been closely linked to productivity, so perhaps addressing loneliness would be a better use of a company's resources than discouraging meetings.

In addition, the home prices that grew the most in the same period were paid by Americans, according to the report. According to the General Council of Notaries report, American buyers are focusing on urban areas like Madrid — as with any big city, people are attracted to its job opportunities and amenities, said Ingrim. However, Americans who want a different retirement or remote work experience and an adventure by relocating to Spain should take a few factors into consideration.

If you've ever dreamed of living and working remotely in Canada, now's your chance: The Canadian government just announced a new immigration program for digital nomads. Under current Canadian immigration rules, digital nomads working for a foreign employer can stay in the country under visitor status for up to six months. The main motivation behind Canada pitching itself as a destination for digital nomads is the labor shortage it faces in "key tech occupations," Fraser adds. Canada joins a growing list of more than 30 countries that have introduced similar programs to attract digital nomads, including Spain and Portugal. If you're interested in applying for a temporary Canadian visa, you'll need a government-issued passport and proof of income.

Canada is developing a scheme to attract digital nomads to the country. Under current rules, remote workers are allowed to live and work in Canada for six months. The Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) said the plans were aimed at making Canada a go-to destination for digital nomads. "We expect that some digital nomads who initially enter Canada to work remotely will decide to seek opportunities with Canadian employers," the IRCC said in a release.
