HELSINKI (AP) — Telecom gear maker Nokia said Thursday that it is planning to cut up to 14,000 jobs worldwide, or 16% of its workforce, as part of a push to reduce costs following a plunge in third-quarter sales and profit. The company said it is aiming to slash 800 million euros ($843 billion) to 1.2 billion euros in costs by the end of 2026. That is expected to lead to a reduction from 86,000 employees to between 72,000 and 77,000 over that time period. Nokia’s third-quarter sales plummeted 20%, to 4.98 billion euros from 6.24 billion in the same three-month period last year. The company’s biggest unit by revenue — the mobile networks business — declined 24% to 2.16 billion euros, driven mainly by weakness in the North American market.

All conflicts can be settled, and there are no excuses for allowing them to become eternal," Ahtisaari said when he accepted the Nobel award in 2008. Open RAN allows mobile operators to mix and match equipment from various suppliers, potentially increasing flexibility. Vodafone agreed in 2022 to work with U.S. chipmaker Intel on the potential to design its own chip architecture. Vodafone and Orange said on Monday they had successfully made 4G calls over a cluster of sites in a rural area near Bucharest based on Open RAN technology. In Italy, Vodafone said a pilot with Nokia aimed to prove that Nokia's Open RAN solution could achieve the same functionality and performance as its purpose built RAN.

COPENHAGEN, Oct 5 (Reuters) - The whirlwind success of weight-loss treatment Wegovy is providing a bonanza not just for its developer, Novo Nordisk (NOVOb.CO), but also for its home country of Denmark. Interviews with Danish economists, analysts, and executives at the Novo Nordisk Foundation which controls Novo highlight the benefits to the economy from jobs to private wealth - but also the potential pitfalls of relying on a single, outsized company. Record profits for Novo are projected to generate returns for the Foundation of more than $12 billion in coming years. Novo Nordisk added 3,500 jobs in Denmark in 2022, bringing the total in the country to 21,000 employees, out of 59,000 worldwide, a company spokesperson said. Before Wegovy, "we used to be kind of, 'Isn't Denmark the place where Stockholm is the capital?'"

"We are thrilled to be manufacturing the Nokia XR21, our signature rugged 5G smartphone, in Europe," HMD Global co-founder, chairman and CEO Jean-Francois Baril said on Tuesday. Before HMD opened its Hungarian operations, Europe had no large-scale smartphone manufacturing as major companies like Apple and Samsung make their phones in Asia to keep costs down. HMD signed an exclusive 10-year licensing agreement with Nokia Oyj (NOKIA.HE), once the world's largest phone maker, in 2016 to make Nokia-branded smartphones and tablets. European value stocks are doing better than growth stocks right now, according to Citi analysts. Citi defined "quality" value stocks as those in the top fifth and fourth quintiles for three characteristics: value, low risk and quality. Citi said investors "have not been particularly risk-averse," as risky value stocks are up 8.6%, while quality value stocks are down 0.3% in the year to date. Nevertheless, the bank noted that investors appear to have been more cautious since the start of August, as quality value stocks are up 4.6%, while risky value stocks are down 0.6%. 'Risky value' stocks For this screen, Citi looked for stocks that scored in the seventh or above decile for value and those in the fifth or below decile for "value low risk" and quality.

LONDON — European markets were muted on Thursday as investors assessed the implications of some big U.S. corporate results and the start of earnings season at home. The pan-European Stoxx 600 hovered around the flatline in early trade, with tech stocks shedding 2.4% to lead losses on the back of weak U.S. earinings, while mining stocks added 1.4%. Markets in Asia-Pacific were mixed overnight as investors digested a slew of economic data across the region. Japan's Nikkei 225 led losses after the country posted a surprise trade surplus of 43 billion yen ($308 million), its first surplus in 23 months. Nokia and rival Ericsson (ERICb.ST) have been hit by slowing orders from customers, mostly in their high-margin North American markets. The results come after Nokia last week cut its annual sales and profit margin outlook and Ericsson reported a big fall in quarterly profit. Comparable operating profit in the second quarter fell to 626 million euros ($702.37 million) from 714 million euros last year, but beat market estimates. The decline in North American markets was somewhat offset by India but with a lower margin. Nokia made gains with Indian operators, particularly with the likes of Reliance Jio Infocomm, which was dominated by Samsung for 4G, he said.
