Investment banking Morgan Stanley has certainly been the place to be among investment banks, not Goldman Sachs (GS). Second place was a tossup between Wells Fargo and Bank of America (BAC). In the case of Wells Fargo, we are seeing real improvements in the business and notable catalysts that we don't see in the others. Bank of America comes in second, while Wells Fargo is cheaper than both. People walk past a Wells Fargo bank on 14th Street on December 20, 2022 in New York City.
Gross borrowing next fiscal year is expected to hit 16.0 trillion rupees, up from an estimated 14.2 trillion rupees in 2022/23, according to the median forecast of 43 economists. Predictions were in a narrow range of 14.8 trillion to 17.2 trillion rupees. Even if it is at the lower end of the range, 2023/2024 gross borrowing would easily be the highest on record. Nim estimated repayments for 2023/24 at about 4.4 trillion rupees. India's government will cut food and fertiliser subsidies to 3.7 trillion rupees, more than 25% below the level of around 5 trillion rupees budgeted for 2022/23, the poll found.
The PBOC manages liquidity by extending loans to banks under its one-year medium-term lending facility (MLF). Twelve analysts expected the central bank to replace that debt exactly with 700 billion yuan of new lending, and 10 expected it to go further and lend a greater amount. A great majority - 21 traders and analysts - expected the MLF interest rate to stay unchanged at 2.75% this month, while the remaining four respondents expected a small rate cut. Markets still expect some monetary policy easing measures to support economic recovery, including cuts to policy rates and the amount of cash that banks must set aside as reserves. "The PBOC will likely cut interest rates soon to aid the expected economic recovery this year."
It's time for investors to bail on Ally Financial , according to Morgan Stanley. The analyst expects Ally will deal with additional pressure from declining net interest margin. Net interest margin (NIM) is the interest a bank is earning on loans compared to the interest it is paying on consumer deposits. "In addition, we see downside to consensus estimates from declining NIM [net interest margin] as deposit funding costs rise faster than auto yields and as losses migrate to the high end of management's range. Graseck similarly downgraded shares of Capital One Financial to underweight from equal weight because of her cautious outlook on consumer credit.
It may be time to buy Comerica after its recent stock underperformance, according to Raymond James. Analyst Michael Rose upgraded shares to outperform from market perform. Shares of Comerica outperformed in 2021, and started underperforming the S & P 500 when the Federal Reserve kicked off its rate hiking cycle this year. The stock also dropped 9% on Oct. 19, after the company posted its third-quarter results and when management suggested a sooner-than-expected peak in net interest income and net interest margins (NII/NIM). Net interest income is the difference a bank earns between its income from lending activities and the interest it pays customers.

The bank reported a 74% surge in quarterly net profit on Saturday, driven by higher loan growth and improving asset quality. Net profit rose to a record 132.64 billion Indian rupees ($1.62 billion) in June-September, beating analysts' forecast of 105.30 billion rupees, according to Refinitiv IBES data. Net interest income, the difference between interest earned and paid out, rose 13% to 351.82 billion rupees. "We should have credit growth of 14-16% in the current financial year," Chairman Dinesh Kumar Khara said in a press briefing. Total provisions declined to 30.39 billion rupees in June-September from 43.92 billion rupees the previous quarter.
Tjandra also pledged that its high deposit rate of up to 8% per year would not be a one-off. BNC's net interest margin (NIM), an indicator of profitability and as of September at 12.7%, was sufficient even with high deposit rates, he said. Sea Group's digital bank SeaBank Indonesia offers a deposit rate of 7%, while Bank Jago offered a 7% rate for its saving products during a promotional period in August. BNC is targeting 10-11 trillion rupiah loan disbursement this year and up to 40% growth in 2023, Tjandra said. But the lender is still expected to book a full-year loss of around 500-600 billion rupiah in December, Tjandra said.
Ally Financial 's weak third-quarter results were enough for analysts at two major Wall Street shops to downgrade the auto lender. "We believe ALLY shares will trade at a discount to tangible book value, as used car prices decline and [net interest margin] moderates around Fed rate hikes," Fandetti said. Ally's stock also got hit with a downgrade to equal weight and an earnings per share forecast cut from Morgan Stanley. "These include rate hikes ending, bottoming of used car prices, and credit quality stabilizing." Ally shares have tumbled more than 44% this year.
With Jeremy Hunt taking up the role on Friday, Britain has had four finance ministers in just four months. Prior to the 2016 Brexit vote, Britain had four finance ministers in 23 years, underlining a sense of stability that is now gone. The response was brutal: the pound slumped, government borrowing costs surged, lenders pulled mortgage deals and the Bank of England had to intervene to stop some pension funds from going under. While Truss had touted low corporation tax as a way to attract business investment, the executives said they wanted stability. British business investment, which flatlined after the 2016 Brexit vote and then fell sharply during the pandemic, was 6% lower in the second quarter of this year than its level of six years ago, in stark contrast to international peers.

Several Chinese city commercial banks and rural commercial lenders have cut their rates on a range of deposits this week, according to statements released on the banks' websites. The smaller lenders followed in the footsteps of some of China's biggest state-owned banks, which implemented rate cuts earlier this month. Peiqian Liu, China economist at Natwest Markets, noted the commercial banks' deposit rate cuts are part of the monetary policy transmission mechanism after the central bank cut key policy rates in August. "This rate cut by commercial banks will help improve the profit margin slightly and is technically opening up more space for further (benchmark lending) rate cuts." Four of the five of China’s largest banks, except for Bank of China, reported falling net interest margins (NIMs) in the second quarter.
