Nikki Haley’s GOP Debate Truths

Wonder Land: Republican presidential hopefuls Ron DeSantis, Mike Pence, Nikki Haley, Tim Scott, Chris Christie, Vivek Ramaswamy and maybe even Donald Trump are united on spending. All offer a much safer future than the alternative. Images: Reuters/Zuma Press Composite: Mark KellyIf Nikki Haley gets a bump in the polls from Wednesday’s presidential debate, one reason will be that she respected viewers by telling them the truth. Ms. Haley said, accurately, that passing a national abortion ban at 15 weeks is politically off the table, since it would require 60 votes in the Senate. She has argued this before, but many Republicans might be hearing it for the first time.

Instead, DeSantis delivered a flat debate performance devoid of any standout moments, demonstrating why he is the best alternative to former President Donald Trump. Takeaways From Nikki Haley’s Mild CNN Town Hall

Compared with CNN’s explosive, much-criticized town-hall-style event with Mr. Trump last month, this one was a throwback to earlier, less combative times. Jake Tapper, the anchor who moderated, never found the need to correct Ms. Haley. The two big red elephants in the room, Mr. Trump and Gov. Both Mr. Trump and Mr. DeSantis, who once supported similar changes, now say they won’t touch the programs. But she displayed less of the punitive rhetoric on the issues that Mr. Trump and Mr. DeSantis have made crucial to their messages.

The husband of Nikki Haley, the Republican presidential candidate and former governor of South Carolina, is preparing to deploy to Africa with the Army National Guard, a military tour that is expected to last a year and for most of the G.O.P. The deployment of Michael Haley, a major in the National Guard, was confirmed on Friday by a person familiar with his plans. The person asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter. The deployment, his second in an active-duty role overseas, was first reported by The Associated Press. It will overlap with much of the Republican nominating competition, which has picked up speed in recent weeks as more candidates join the field.

Presidential candidates typically resign from corporate boards soon after entering the race, to avoid the appearance of any conflicts. A spokeswoman for Ms. Haley did not comment on the filing, or on Ms. Haley’s continued service on the United Homes board. Ms. Haley listed a dozen speaking engagements, for each of which she reported an honorarium between $100,001 and $1 million. The Wall Street Journal reported last month that Ms. Haley had received stock options from United Homes worth close to $300,000 on March 30, about six weeks after she entered the presidential race. In the filing, Ms. Haley reported owning between $250,000 and $500,000 worth of stock in Great Southern Homes, which became United Homes when it went public through a merger.

The 26,703 shares of United Homes Group Inc. stock awarded on March 30 to Ms. Haley—a former South Carolina governor who hasn’t been employed full-time since resigning as United Nations ambassador from the Trump administration in 2018—was part of her compensation for serving on the company’s board of directors.
New York CNN —CNN has parted ways with longtime host Don Lemon. “Don will forever be a part of the CNN family, and we thank him for his contributions over the past 17 years,” said CNN CEO Chris Licht in a memo to staff. In a statement of his own, Lemon said his agent told him Monday morning that CNN had terminated him. Prior to “CNN This Morning,” Lemon hosted the prime-time show “Don Lemon Tonight” for more than eight years. “When I make a mistake, I own it,” Lemon told staff during an editorial meeting.
Haley has three aligned committees: Her main campaign committee, a leadership PAC and a joint fundraising committee that funnels money to the other two committees. But, in doing so, it double-counted $2.7 million that first landed in the joint fundraising committee and then was parceled out to the campaign committee and the leadership PAC. Other candidates have sought to present their campaign filings in the most favorable light. The campaign of former President Donald Trump, for instance, touted a $9.5 million haul during the first six weeks of his campaign. But, in that window, only about $5 million flowed into the joint fundraising committee that powers his political operation.
New York CNN —CNN anchor Don Lemon will return to the network’s air on Wednesday after he participates in formal training following sexist comments he made last week, the network’s chief executive, Chris Licht, said in an email to employees Monday night. “To that end, Don will return to CNN This Morning on Wednesday.”Lemon previously apologized to employees for his comments, which prompted internal and external backlash, during Friday’s daily editorial meeting. “And I own this one as well.”Lemon made the sexist comments during a Thursday discussion on “CNN This Morning” over former South Carolina Gov. Haley herself weighed in later in the day on Twitter, attacking Lemon for the comments and even using them to fundraise. “The people I am closest to in this organization are women,” Lemon added, citing his relationships with various hosts and executives.
New York CNN —CNN anchor Don Lemon apologized to his colleagues on Friday over sexist remarks he made on the network’s morning show about when women are “in their prime,” telling staffers during the company’s daily editorial meeting that he was sorry for offending them. “And I certainly see why people found it completely misguided.”“When I make a mistake, I own it,” Lemon added. “And I own this one as well.”Lemon made the comments about women during a Thursday discussion on “CNN This Morning” over former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley’s ‘Great Day’
  + stars: | 2023-02-15 | by ( The Editorial Board | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
The 2024 presidential campaign is underway, Lord help us, and on Tuesday former South Carolina Governor and U.S. ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley joined the fray. The question her opening video didn’t answer, but she will have to, is: Why her? Some Republicans want to clear the field for one candidate to beat Donald Trump, who would almost certainly lose again to President Biden. But running for President is an ordeal, and primary contests have the virtue of identifying candidates’ weaknesses that will give GOP voters an idea of who is the best long-distance runner.
Nikki Haley’s entrance into the presidential race this week is shedding new light on her past criticism and contradicting statements about former President Donald Trump. After she joined his administration, she went on to become a Trump supporter, encouraging voters to support his re-election in 2020. Haley defended Trump after a senior administration official published an anonymous op-ed in the New York Times. Jan. 7, 2021: Haley said at the Republican National Committee’s winter meeting that Trump “ was badly wrong with his words yesterday. I mean, move on.” Feb. 17, 2021: Haley wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed that her comments about Trump were not contradictory.
Ron DeSantis lead an early — and still incomplete — Republican presidential field, according to a new national Monmouth University poll released Thursday. Asked whom they’d like to see as the GOP’s presidential nominee, 33% of Republican voters answered Trump and another 33% picked DeSantis. But the contest is closer among respondents who identify as strong Republicans (DeSantis 49%, Trump 46%) and among evangelical Republicans (DeSantis 51%, Trump 44%). The worst favorable/unfavorable ratings among Republican voters were for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (23%-53%) and embattled freshman Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., (12%-42%). The Monmouth University poll was conducted Jan. 26 to Feb. 2 of 566 registered Republican voters, and it has a margin of error of plus-minus 6.1 percentage points.
