Coming off a wonderfully surprising stock market global boom of 2023, this year could be anybody's guess. Utility-scale solar projects are growing around the world, and Wall Street firm T.D. There is too much money chasing solar projects, someone has to win. Here's the thinking for 2024: global oil demand is going to grow, but given China's rolling economic pain it may increase by less than some expect. Russia remains robust on global markets despite sanctions, and OPEC may have done most of what it can to keep its member and allies production levels lower to balance out global markets.

A few days ago, S & P noted that the S & P 500 total return of 25.85% would only be up 9.49% ex the Magnificent 7. If you own the S & P 500 long-term, you are participating in those gains. The S & P is up 1,200 points (25%) since then and is knocking on the door of an historic high. The S & P 500 is overbought and expensive on most metrics. The S & P 500 up almost 25% in a year is the kind of problem a lot of people would be happy to have.

Plug Power shares have slipped 63% this year, Enphase Energy shares have plunged 60%, SolarEdge Technologies shares have declined 71% and NextEra Energy shares have slid 29%. Yet clean energy stocks haven’t recovered, despite hopes that an influx of US government spending on climate solutions would help revive the sector. The culprit behind clean energy stocks’ poor returns? Krull sees the current rut in clean energy stocks as a buying opportunity for investors. Clean energy stocks also aren’t the only way investors are putting their cash to work with a sustainability mindset.

The new book, "The Fund: Ray Dalio, Bridgewater Associates, and the Unraveling of a Wall Street Legend" — which Dalio and his lawyers have pushed back against — describes everything from Bridgewater's investment process to internal grudges and backstabbing to allegations of sexual harassment. Here are the places where the dozens of Bridgewater employees and consultants named in the book ended up. Dalio, the book said, wrote into the firm's bylaws that he could never hold that title again. Before that, she was the head of investment research and a co-chief investment officer for sustainability. He's worked at different funds since leaving in 2006, including Larch Lane Advisors and Bonaccord Capital as an investor and business-development professional.

The headquarters of U.S. energy exporter and pipeline operator Kinder Morgan Inc. is seen in Houston, Texas, U.S. September 27, 2020. REUTERS/Gary McWilliams/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 6 (Reuters) - U.S. pipeline operator Kinder Morgan (KMI.N) said on Monday it would acquire NextEra Energy Partners' (NEP.N) gas pipelines in South Texas for $1.82 billion. NextEra Energy Partners' (NEP) Texas natural gas pipeline portfolio, STX Midstream, primarily consists of seven pipelines which provide natural gas to Mexico and power producers and municipalities in South Texas. "Upon closing, the proceeds would be sufficient to pay off the outstanding project-related debt," NextEra Energy Partners' CEO John Ketchum said in a statement. The sale price represents an about 10 times multiple on the estimated calendar-year 2023 adjusted core profit for the Texas natural gas pipeline portfolio, NEP said.

The best opportunities today are in value stocks, meaning names trading at about a 22% discount to fair value, he said. Morningstar estimates fair value based on its projection of a company's future cash flows and the predictability of those flows. In fact, year-to-date, many utilities stocks have fallen by more than even long-dated bonds. What's great about utilities stocks is that they are very steady because demand for electricity is inelastic. It's a five-star-rated stock trading at a 23% discount to fair value and has about a 4.58% dividend yield.

Morning Bid: Big Tech reports as bond yields recoil

The two tech giants report after the bell on Tuesday, with Meta (META.O) following on Wednesday and Amazon (AMZN.O) on Thursday. Partly lifted by the year's artificial intelligence craze, the tech behemoths have clearly flattered year-to-date gains of 10% in the overall S&P500. And yet the seemingly endless squeeze in bond markets since midyear has seen megacap indexes (.NYFANG) retreat some 12% from their highs for the year. The upshot of the whole picture is to give U.S. stock futures a lift ahead of the open on Tuesday - with Asia and European bourses in positive territory too as bond markets stabilised. Ten-year U.S. Treasury yields held about 4.83% - some 19 basis points below Monday's peak at 5.02%.

Of note, Tesla shares sank more than 9% on Thursday following a pessimistic economic outlook from CEO Elon Musk during the company's earnings call. The proposed tax credit, 45V, is meant to turbocharge the production of low-emissions hydrogen. "The IRA's section 45V production tax credit is the most generous clean hydrogen subsidy in the world," Jesse Jenkins, professor of macro-scale energy systems at Princeton University, told CNBC. John Macdougall | Afp | Getty ImagesThe adjudication of the hydrogen tax credit has become about more than just the hydrogen tax credit, too. The amount of the hydrogen tax credit, which is available for 10 years, depends on the emissions generated in making hydrogen. If hydrogen is produced without releasing any carbon emissions, the tax credit is maxed out at $3 per kilogram of hydrogen.

Such areas are often referred to as "bond proxies" for their strong, stable dividends, which over the past decade have usually exceeded Treasury yields. But surging bond yields have dulled the appeal of bond proxies. As a result, shares of bond proxies have taken an outsize hit in recent weeks. The S&P 500 utilities sector (.SPLRCU) has tumbled 13% since last month’s Fed meeting. While the sector is expected to see stronger growth than the overall S&P 500 in the third and fourth quarters, its projected 8.6% increase in 2024 lags the expected 12% rise for the overall S&P 500, according to LSEG IBES.

There's still value to be found among renewable energy stocks despite a rout, according to Bank of America. Leading renewable stock NextEra Energy Partners trimmed its growth forecast earlier this week, sparking a sell-off in the cleantech sector that has lasted for several days. Its stock tumbled about 27% so far this week, while its parent NextEra Energy is down 15% during the same period. BofA analyst Julien Dumoulin-Smith said the event has caused a "collapse in confidence" in NextEra and stoked fears that higher rates will dampen demand for renewable energy projects. A tidal shift in corporate support for decarbonization pared with government funding for the energy transition has created a secular growth cycle that can exceed $2 trillion, according to UBS. Second-quarter earnings reports showed a "clear divergence" in whether and how companies would be helped by the approximately $600 billion in government benefits in support of the green energy transition, analyst Shneur Gershuni told clients. Following the latest corporate earnings season, Gershuni updated his list of stocks that investors can use to play the energy transition capital expenditure cycle. Here are 10 that made the most updated list, including all of his new additions: Sempra's addition came after announcements showing it was upping exposure to the energy transition, Gershuni said. Despite falling around 19% this year, the average analyst sees an upside of more than 32% ahead, according to LSEG.
