Leading tech companies like Google, Meta, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Microsoft are all scrambling to find new sources of data. Part of the problem is that publishers are increasingly accusing these companies of hoovering up copyrighted data. One solution is synthetic data, which is artificially generated rather than collected from the real world, and can easily be generated by machine learning algorithms. OpenAI has considered synthetic data as an option to train its models, but CEO Sam Altman has raised concerns about producing quality data. "As long as you can get over the synthetic data event horizon, where the model is smart enough to make good synthetic data, everything will be fine," Altman said at a tech conference in May 2023.

Silvano Marchetto, an Italian-born restaurateur whose Greenwich Village trattoria, Da Silvano, became a star-studded canteen and a Page Six fixture over four decades, died on June 4 in Florence, Italy. Akin to a downtown Elaine’s, Da Silvano, which opened in 1975, was one of New York’s reigning haunts for the art, fashion, media and film crowds. And Mr. Marchetto, a hard-living Tuscan who parked his Ferrari ornamentally outside his establishment, was its rustic host and mascot. He wore Hawaiian shirts and yellow pants, and his wrists were covered in silver bracelets and jewelry. Before social media democratized the public’s access to the lives of celebrities, tabloids like The New York Post and The Daily News relied on Da Silvano as a source of juicy gossip.

Trump’s campaign insists the former president is his own best adviser and he alone will make the call. Vance,” Trump Jr. told Newsmax in January. That’s a key concern of Trump’s top advisers who have otherwise let the former president dictate the process. “President Trump should not be made to explain other people’s scandals or statements.”Burgum’s wealth may have worked in his favor for a time when Trump trailed President Joe Biden in the money wars. But the recent influx of cash into the campaign following Trump’s fundraising blitz and criminal convictions has blunted that advantage.

New York CNN —Donald Trump can’t quit Fox News. Comparatively, Trump posted 26 video clips from the upstart internet streamer Right Side Broadcasting Network, 11 videos from the pro-Trump cable channel Newsmax, and 5 from the far-right Real America’s Voice. He posted eight links to Real America’s Voice, only three to Breitbart, and one to the New York Post. Indeed, Polskin’s analysis pulls back the curtain on how Trump works the media. Two elected parent leaders in New York City were removed from their school council positions on Friday, a rare step by school officials that reflected the escalating fights over broader political and cultural issues in local schools. The remarkable move by the schools chancellor, David C. Banks, appeared to be the first time that the administration has removed elected parent leaders from their posts. It came after both parents had faced months of public backlash over issues including rules regarding transgender students in sports and the Israel-Hamas war. One of the parents, Maud Maron, was rebuked by the schools chancellor after an education news outlet, The 74, reported that she wrote “there is no such thing as trans kids” in a private text chat. The parents also took issue with her promoting a student walkout to call for a cease-fire in Gaza.

Trump is now 78 years old. “Just remember what I’m telling you: 78 is not old,” Trump asserted to a New York Post gossip columnist almost two years ago. “This is a degraded version of an already horrible person,” Emhoff said in reference to Trump’s Vegas speech. The Biden campaign called Trump “feeble” on social media when the former president ended a post-meeting news conference after five minutes without taking questions. But the observations about Trump’s age and mental state are not just coming from inside the Biden campaign.

When The New York Post first reported in 2020 about a laptop once used by Hunter Biden — which the paper said contained incriminating evidence against him and his father, Joseph R. Biden Jr., who was running for president — it set off a firestorm. Many national news outlets raised questions about the existence of the laptop and the claims about its contents, while major social media platforms limited posts about The Post’s coverage. Many of the claims made by The Post in its coverage of the laptop, in which the publication sought to link President Biden to corrupt business dealings, have not been proved. But the laptop had enough incriminating evidence to continue to haunt Hunter Biden. A prosecutor briefly held up the laptop before the jury in Delaware, and an F.B.I.

Facing financial challenges and political division, several of America’s largest news organizations have turned over the reins to editors who prize relentless reporting on a budget. Will Lewis, a veteran of London’s Daily Telegraph and News UK, is now the chief executive of The Washington Post, where reporters have raised questions about his Fleet Street ethics. He recently ousted the paper’s American editor and replaced her with a former colleague from The Telegraph, dumbfounding American reporters who had never heard of him. Michael Bloomberg, a noted Anglophile, hired John Micklethwait (former editor of the London-based Economist) in 2015 to run Bloomberg News. Rupert Murdoch tapped Keith Poole (The Sun and The Daily Mail) to edit The New York Post in 2021, the same year that The Associated Press named an Englishwoman, Daisy Veerasingham, as its chief executive.

CNN —Rudy Giuliani was suspended from New York City radio station WABC and his talk show canceled after he flagrantly ignored orders not to discuss false 2020 election conspiracy theories, the station’s owner said Monday. In recent months, Giuliani was repeatedly directed to not make claims of electronic voting manipulation surrounding the 2020 election, John Catsimatidis, the billionaire GOP donor and owner of the radio station, said in a statement. “Guiliani has admitted repeatedly over the past few days that he agreed not to speak about Dominion,” Catsimatidis said. But Murdoch was an anomaly, to a large degree, in the right-wing media universe. While Murdoch’s power has waned in recent years, his empire continues to serve as the source of gravity in the right-wing media universe. Without Murdoch Media joining the chorus and denouncing Johnson, Greene’s efforts failed to gain enough momentum to actually jeopardize Johnson’s leadership. Instead, Murdoch — invisibly — helped Johnson escape what could have been a dire situation. After all, elsewhere in right-wing media, Johnson was portrayed as a turncoat.
