I am minutes away from the ocean and one of my favorite restaurants on the island. This spring, I made the leap and moved with my two youngest kids to Negril, Jamaica. Overall, I feel like I have a better chance of longevity here. To me, the food in Jamaica tastes different from the food in the U.S. I knew only about four of my neighbors on the street and I lived in that house for seven years.

The officer was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said at a news conference. Police responded to the high rise after 10 a.m. following a dispute between a Four Seasons worker and the man on the 33rd floor, which is occupied by residences, Schierbaum said. The Four Seasons hotel takes up 19 of 53 stories of the high rise and occupies 244 rooms, 23 of which are designated suites. When I'm sitting with a stressed-out patient in my office and I raise the importance of healthy relationships, they almost always intellectually understand. But it's critical, because healthy relationships help people thrive. As Robert Waldinger, director of the decades-long Harvard Study of Adult Development, has explained: "The clearest message that we get from this 75-year study is this: Good relationships keep us happier and healthier. Here are three surprisingly simple and actionable strategies you can use to lift loneliness, make connections, and start to foster healthy relationships, all of which can be easily implemented even in your busy daily life. Just make sure you're being mindful of your limited time and energy, so you don't burn out in the process.

Mark Cuban says he hates golf. On Friday's episode of ABC's "Shark Tank," he offered $1 million to a company selling portable golf courses anyway. The San Francisco-based company BucketGolf, run by brother-and-sister duo Tyler and Jenny Simmons, sells a game that resembles golf, with foldable buckets as holes that can be placed wherever the players choose. The company was on track to bring in more than $12 million in 2024 sales at the time of the episode's taping, said Tyler Simmons, the company's CEO and founder — up from $5.9 million in 2023 and $2.5 million in 2022. BucketGolf could also benefit from a Shark's mentorship on matters of logistics, Tyler Simmons said: "We have yet to make it through a busy season without running out of some of our best products."

That's when it helps to look to how seasoned executives negotiate, says Tessa White, a career coach with 20 years of HR experience and founder of The Job Doctor. Say you ultimately want a $60,000 base salary with a 20% annual bonus, but the company makes an offer of $60,000 with a 10% bonus. Remember that "the hardest thing for the company to do is give you money upfront in base pay," White says. But they may be able to negotiate for one-time pay, something that's a delayed cost, or non-salary perks like adjusting your job title or figuring out a flexible-work agreement. Washington had pressed its ally in the hopes of ending the cycle of attacks and avoiding escalation into a wider war. Blinken said the U.S. is tracking the aid deliveries very carefully and “absolutely essential” that Israel comply. "Israel has achieved most of its strategic objectives when it comes to Gaza,” Blinken said in Tel Aviv. (It also signed off on $9.5 billion in humanitarian aid for Gaza, as well as the conflict zones of Ukraine and Sudan.) But far-fetched as it might seem, it came up during Blinken’s meeting with the Saudi crown prince during this trip.

Not every public apology from a CEO resonates — which is why a recent memo from Poshmark founder Manish Chandra stands out, says a leadership expert. Customers revolted, leaving Poshmark sellers stranded: For many, the loss of sales was worse than any savings they pocketed from the reduced fees, Chandra wrote in an apology blog post last week. "We have decided to revert to our original fee structure effective October 24, 2024," he wrote. That's a rare effective CEO apology, says Talia Fox, a leadership strategist, author and head of KUSI Global, an executive consulting firm. "Even the smallest gesture ... some tangible incentive that backs up the apology [can go a long way]."

As the Biden administration makes a final diplomatic push in the Middle East before next week’s U.S. presidential election, little is expected to be achieved before the result is known, officials and analysts in the region said on Monday. Envoys from Israel, Egypt, the United States and Qatar renewed talks in Doha, the Qatari capital, on Monday over a cease-fire in Gaza. American mediators were also expected this week to continue to try to reach a truce between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to discuss sensitive diplomacy. Osama Hamdan, a Hamas leader, said on Sunday that the group would only agree to a permanent cessation of hostilities, dashing hopes that Israel’s recent killing of the group’s leader, Yahya Sinwar, would bring about a swift change in its negotiating position.

London CNN —Volkswagen plans to close “at least” three factories in Germany, lay off tens of thousands of staff and downsize remaining plants in the country, the company’s employee group said Monday. The plans are already facing pushback from labor unions in the country, where Volkswagen employs 295,000 people, setting the stage for possible strikes in the coming weeks. Volkswagen has been locked in negotiations with unions for weeks over its plans to cut costs and restructure business operations. A Volkswagen employee holds a placard reading "Hands off the collective agreement" during a VW works council event in Zwickau, eastern Germany on October 28, 2024. It has previously said that it would seek to terminate an employment protection agreement with labor unions, which has been in place since 1994, to “future proof” the business.

Picture this common scenario: Person #1 is in the middle of sharing something meaningful with Person #2. Suddenly, they notice Person #2 is scrolling through their phone instead of listening. Can you relate to Person #1 or Person #2 — or maybe both? In my research on emotionally intelligent digital etiquette, I've found that phubbing erodes trust and weakens connections, leaving others feeling lonely, insecure, resentful — and dissatisfied in their relationship with you. Instead of letting their phone control their attention, they take the following three steps to stay present.

The best negotiators Mark Cuban has worked with — or against — have something in common: They're willing to compromise. "One: They're patient because they know what they're trying to accomplish," Cuban, 66, tells CNBC Make It. As a jobseeker, it's easy to feel like any job opportunity is a good one. "Getting to a job offer is a great thing," says Amanda Augustine, career expert at TopResume. Here's how to tell if a job opportunity is right for you, and how to walk away if it's not. If the offer they give you can't match your must-haves — even after you've tried negotiating — it might be time to walk away. The second reason a job might not be the right opportunity is that you detect it has a certain environment that wouldn't be best for you.

Outside of technology giants like Nvidia and Apple, you may not have heard of many of the top 10 publicly traded companies that delivered the highest 25-year total return to their investors. A few years later, on October 22, 1999, its stock price had risen slightly to over $3. If you had invested $10,000 in the company at that time, your investment would be worth nearly $9 million as of October 22, per CNBC's calculations. Nvidia has experienced meteoric growth in the value of its stock over the past quarter century as well. A $10,000 investment in Nvidia made 25 years ago would be worth a little over $32 million now.

Why companies bait-and-switch job candidatesExperiencing a bait-and-switch during job interviews is a frustrating candidate experience and highlights one of the many breakdowns in today's hiring process, says Jon Stross, president and co-founder of Greenhouse. For the most part, these experiences say more about the hiring team than you as a candidate, he says. Boeing machinists voted against a new labor deal that included 35% wage increases over four years, their union said Wednesday, extending a more than five-week strike that has halted most of the company’s aircraft production, which is centered in the Seattle area. The strike is costing the company about $1 billion a month, according to S&P Global Ratings. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers union had originally sought wage increases of 40%. The strike began as Boeing was working to ramp up production of the 737 and other aircraft. Spirit AeroSystems last week said it would temporarily furlough about 700 workers and that layoffs or other furloughs are possible if Boeing machinists’ strike continues.

Workers have been losing leverage in a challenging job market over the last year, but the slide could be hitting a rebound point, according to new data. Other indicators of workers' bargaining power, like being recruited into their role, negotiating their offer and receiving a signing bonus also fell slightly in the last quarter. But the small dips could indicate that workers' struggles are reaching a plateau, says Julia Pollak, chief economist at ZipRecruiter. Overall, the share of workers who describe their recent job search as "poor" reached a record high of 10%. As of mid-2024, 24% of recent hires said their new job was their dream job, a sharp fall from 42% of job-switchers who felt that way a year ago.
