With the data from 2022 in and final, we’ve been poring over the data — including our experiment in Wisconsin — to identify opportunities for improvement. The big Wisconsin mail experiment — where we paid voters up to $25 dollars to take a mail survey — didn’t reveal anything especially alarming about our typical Times/Siena polls. On many measures — gun ownership, evangelical Christianity, vaccination status — the Times/Siena poll looked more conservative than the mail poll. The Wisconsin study did offer ambiguous evidence that Times/Siena phone respondents lean a bit farther to the left than the respondents to the mail survey. We’re reordering our questionnaires to let us look at and potentially use respondents who drop out of a survey early.

A new report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation finds that childcare is weighing on parents' jobs. BLS data shows many employed people miss work because of childcare issues. Those job changes, per the report, "include quitting a job, not taking a job or greatly changing a job in the previous year." An analysis by economist Clive R. Belfield estimated that, roughly, inadequate childcare costs the US $122 billion annually, with $78 billion of that loss coming from parental income. Videos posted on the young influencer’s account showing her running and weight-lifting were shared heavily on Chinese social media and also appeared in various state media outlets following her death late last month. State media outlets said that the influencer’s family had received “compensation” from the weight loss camp in Shaanxi, but did not say how much. In China, as in much of Asia and the rest of the world, social media is awash with unhealthy and unrealistic trends promoting extreme weight loss. One notorious recent social media trend in China involved women posing behind vertical sheets of printer paper to prove their waists were so thin they could not be seen either side. Zhou’s death has also increased scrutiny of the social media influencer industry more generally.

CNN —The evidence in the indictment against Donald Trump for his alleged mishandling of classified documents after leaving office can seem “jaw-dropping”. Keep in mind, though, that 50% of Americans indicated in an ABC News/Ipsos poll after his New York indictment related to alleged hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels. Biden was a point ahead of him in an average of national surveys before the New York indictment. There have been some signs, however, that Trump’s post-New York indictment bump has stalled and even receded somewhat. Whether another indictment is the way to eat into his support among Republicans is a whole other question.

That doesn’t seem like a particularly high success rate, though we should remember that many vice presidents (like Cheney) don’t run. The Fed's 2% inflation goal is an "absolute trap," according to 40-year market veteran Barry Knapp. Knapp pointed to tightening credit conditions, suggesting more tightening from the Fed could cause a recession. Elevated prices aren't always a drag on the economy, he added, pointing to 3%-4% inflation in the 90s. "The whole 2% target is an absolute trap," The Ironsides Macroeconomics founder said in an interview with CNBC on Tuesday. But elevated inflation isn't necessarily a hindrance to the economy, Knapp said, pointing to 3%-4% inflation in the early 90s, years when the economy expanded and benefited from a huge boom in business spending.
