AdvertisementEven though LA is much larger than San Francisco, LA doesn't feel urban, while San Francisco does. Here's what I felt were the five worst things about leaving the San Francisco Bay Area and moving to LA. AdvertisementAs an artist and business owner, I founded my eco-friendly textile and wallpaper collection business in San Francisco in 2013. I miss San Francisco's culture and philanthropic spiritLiving in San Francisco, I found that many of its businesses have a good environmental or social mission. But I believe, for the most part, San Francisco still has the same caring heart and soul it's had for years.

I've visited nearly every US national park and love hiking. However, many national parks can be enjoyed without hiking. In fact, the National Park Service saw over 325 million visits in 2023 — the highest visitation since 2017. Although most national parks offer a variety of activities, some are definitely more hiker-friendly than others. As someone who's been to almost every US national park, I've found that many have incredible hiking opportunities as well as some of the best views from viewpoints or parking lots.

I worked in public schools for over two decades and loved that my kids were in school. Not only did homeschooling seem difficult and intimidating, but as a former teacher, I loved that my kids were in school. For more than two decades, I worked in schools — as a classroom teacher, after-school program teacher, volunteer, tutor, and substitute. There were growing pains, but this new version of school worked for us. During remote learning, for the first time, they had the freedom to focus on learning without the social exhaustion of a seven-hour school day.

In central Chile, not far from where the Andes Mountains meet the Pacific Ocean, a vast swath of pristine wilderness is changing hands under the most unusual circumstances. Roberto Hagemann, a Chilean businessman who owns the 325,000-acre property, has agreed to sell the land to his longtime adversaries, a band of upstart environmentalists who spent years thwarting his efforts to develop the property. It is a landmark transaction that will preserve some of the most ecologically significant territory in South America. The deal is also a case study in modern-day conservation. At a moment when ecologically sensitive lands are under threat around the globe, it takes a unique confluence of legal, financial and political resources — plus a bit of luck — to protect them from relentless development.

As someone who appreciates nature and wildlife, he loves visiting the national parks in Alaska, which has more than half of all the national parks in the US. But Alaska is the eighth-least populated state, with 733,406 residents, according to the census. "But to visit, especially in the summer, it's like a dream."
