DeSantis' latest so-called "Freedom Blueprint" proposal appears similar to a measure the Florida legislature considered in 2021 and 2022 that the state's largest teachers' union, the Florida Education Association, called "anti-freedom" and "anti-educator." Even Charlie Crist, a former congressman and DeSantis' failed 2022 challenger, picked Miami-Dade's teachers' union boss, Karla Hernández-Mats, as his running mate. State lawmakers and the governor gave teachers bonuses this past year and increased pay — though largely among new teachers, according to the Florida Education Association. DeSantis acknowledged during his speech that changes to union dues might emaciate the labor groups, but said if teachers aren't paying dues then they should be decertified. The last two versions of the anti-union died in committee under opposition from Florida AFL-CIO and the Florida Education Association.
SEATTLE — For many families, paying for college is a financial burden, and experts say education-funding myths may be adding to the student loan debt crisis. "There's often this perception that somehow people are being penalized for saving for college," said Cozy Wittman, national education and partnerships speaker with College Inside Track. Parent-owned 529 college savings plans are assessed at 5.64% when filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, known as the FAFSA, she said, speaking at the Financial Planning Association's annual conference on Tuesday. That means for every $10,000 of 529 plan savings, roughly $564 counts toward the parents' expected family contribution, potentially reducing financial aid by roughly the same amount, according to the College Savings Plans Network. The average 529 account value was $30,287 in 2021, the College Savings Plans Network reported.
At Georgia Tech, applications from India surpassed those from China for the first time last year. International students returned to U.S. college and university campuses in droves last fall, with schools recovering a portion of the enrollment they lost when visas were hard to come by and the nation closed its borders during the depths of the pandemic. Enrollment by international students rose by 3.8% to 948,519 in the 2021-2022 school year, compared with 914,095 the prior year, according to a new report by the nonprofit Institute of International Education and U.S. State Department.
Why Randi Weingarten Supports Harvard’s Discrimination

You almost have to admire the chutzpah of the teachers unions. Even as they fight to keep poor minority kids trapped in failing public schools, they plead that racial preferences in college admissions are necessary to compensate for these students’ inferior K-12 education. High-achieving Asian-American and white students must be discriminated against to make up for the educational “privileges” that unions deny minorities. That’s the argument advanced by the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers in their friend-of-the-court briefs supporting Harvard and the University of North Carolina in cases the Supreme Court will hear on Monday concerning the legality of racial preferences. “Our schools, from K-12 to higher education, still struggle to provide equitable opportunities for students of color,” the NEA laments.
U.S. President Joe Biden delivers remarks at a Democratic National Committee event at the National Education Association headquarters in Washington, U.S., September 23, 2022. REUTERS/Evelyn HocksteinPresident Joe Biden vowed that Democrats will codify the right to an abortion into law if two more are elected to the U.S. Senate in the upcoming midterm elections. "The power to get things done is in the hands of the American people, especially the women out there," Biden said. In total, nearly half of states have banned, placed limits on, or attempted to ban abortion. Biden in his speech Friday said Republicans would try to pass a ban on abortion if they gained control of the legislature after the midterms.

Florida’s population is growing fast, which means it needs more teachers. Ron DeSantis ’s new proposal to give teachers a raise while making it harder for unions to withhold pay before teachers see it. DeSantis announced a plan Monday to pass a Teachers’ Bill of Rights and spend an extra $200 million on teacher pay in the coming school year. The funds will bring the total the state has spent on teacher salaries to more than $3 billion from 2020 to 2024. They’ll also lift the minimum salary to more than $48,000, eighth-highest among states according to the National Education Association.

The union also won the right to binding salary arbitration for players who haven’t yet qualified for free agency.
