Even before Biden dropped out of the race, Rep. Chip Roy, the Texas Republican, filed a resolution in June after the president’s disastrous debate performance, calling on the 25th Amendment to be used against Biden. After Biden withdrew from the race, Missouri Sen. Eric Schmitt, a Republican, wrote letters to Harris and the Cabinet officials in the Biden administration, asking them to remove Biden from office. To forcibly wrest power from a sitting president, the vice president would have to be on board, according to the text of the amendment. Why do we have the 25th Amendment? That was before the 25th Amendment, so there was no constitutional rule.

Can we all admit there was something supremely gratifying about watching Nancy Pelosi work over the last few weeks? As concerns mounted among Democrats about President Biden’s mental fitness and his disastrous debate performance, and as Mr. Biden responded by digging in his heels, it was the 84-year-old Ms. Pelosi — a fellow octogenarian, no longer in charge, yet as shrewd and formidable an operator as ever — who took those concerns and helped organize them into a sustained pressure campaign. When Mr. Biden said he absolutely wouldn’t drop out, Ms. Pelosi went on his favorite TV show to say he needed to make a decision “because time is running short.” When the president told her during a phone call that polling data suggested he could still win, she challenged him: “Put Donilon on the phone,” Ms. Pelosi is said to have demanded of the president, asking for one of Biden’s advisers. “Show me what polls.”Even as Mr. Biden was becoming “increasingly resentful” of what he viewed as the “orchestrated campaign” against him, as The Times reported, she kept working methodically behind the scenes, talking to lawmakers, members of her old leadership team and her large network of donors, who slowly and steadily kept piling on. Before Mr. Biden ultimately threw in the towel last weekend, his team was bracing for what she might do next, Politico reported, with a quote that made this grandmother of 10 sound a bit like Don Corleone.

That is a strategic political calculation, because she knew — and her people knew — that you will not reach the White House if you frolic with war criminals." Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel on Wednesday issued a full-throated defense of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, during an address to Congress that laid bare deep divisions in Washington over a war that has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians. The fact of Mr. Netanyahu’s speech was almost as notable as anything he said. In the face of increasing international censure and dissent both in Israel and in the United States, Mr. Netanyahu was seeking to use Congress to lift his sagging political fortunes — and leaders in both parties obliged with a bipartisan invitation to receive him. Vice President Kamala Harris declined to preside, as is traditional for the vice president, citing a scheduling conflict. And Representative Rashida Tlaib, Democrat of Michigan and the first Palestinian American member of Congress, held up a sign as Mr. Netanyahu spoke that read “war criminal” on one side and “guilty of genocide” on the other.

The outcome of the U.S. presidential election and its implications for the crypto industry got more uncertain this week after Vice President Kamala Harris entered the race following President Joe Biden's exit. Many are now wondering what a Harris administration could mean for crypto – especially following years of an anti-crypto crusade led by Biden-appointed SEC Chair Gary Gensler and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass. On Tuesday, a day after Harris launched her campaign, billionaire Mark Cuban said her advisors had begun reaching out to him about crypto policy . Bitcoin, the largest cryptocurrency, had recently seen a boost as Trump incorporated crypto into his platform. The crypto industry sees itself as nonpartisan, and in recent weeks has bipartisan support for crypto in Congress has been growing.

At a joint session of Congress this afternoon, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel issued a full-throated defense of his country’s nine-month military campaign in Gaza. He angrily pushed back on the criticism of Israel’s tactics that has rippled through the American political left, and praised the U.S.-Israel alliance. “Our enemies are your enemies,” Netanyahu said. Vice President Kamala Harris also declined to preside, as is traditional for the vice president. Netanyahu is scheduled to meet with Harris tomorrow, after a separate meeting with the president.

CNN —Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic nomination for president during a news conference in Washington on Tuesday. “Kamala Harris and her candidacy has excited and energized the House Democratic Caucus, the Democratic Party and the nation,” he said. One source told CNN that Schumer and Jeffries, both of New York, have spoken to Harris. However, Schumer and Jeffries did not immediately endorse Harris, at first stating that they “look forward to meeting in person with Vice President Harris shortly as we collectively work to unify the Democratic Party and the country.”Many of Harris’ potential challengers, such as Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, endorsed the vice president, giving her a clear path to the nomination.

Her multi-hour phone blitz to Democratic Party power players on Sunday hinted at an operation primed ahead of time but that was kept secret and didn’t leak. The vice president has shown signs of improving her political skills recently, but that’s never been her forte. In a memo to reporters, the Trump campaign previewed a blistering assault to come on Harris. Harris is the least popular vice president in history – which is no surprise given her terrible record,” the memo said. The question now is whether Harris, who has exhibited considerable political liabilities as vice president, has the skills, staying power and luck to take advantage.

Why some big money is holding out for nowAfter just one full day of campaigning, Vice President Kamala Harris has a glide path to the Democratic presidential nomination. The Harris campaign also said it had raised more than $100 million between Sunday afternoon and Monday evening. But some major Democratic donors, including Mike Bloomberg and the venture capitalist Vinod Khosla, have yet to endorse her. The concern is that if they support Harris too soon, they would appear to be anointing their party’s presidential candidate, rather than her earning it through a full democratic process. And Khosla posted on X, “An open process will allow everyone a chance to make their case and express their views.

Biden won California by 29 points in 2020, and Harris will surely win the deep blue state in her own right. Along the way, Harris' political trajectory opened up doors to places that other candidates eyeing the White House have to fly across the country to reach. AdvertisementAs a presidential candidate, Harris won't be a stranger to the tech giants that fueled so much growth in her state. And should Harris win the White House, there'd be a familiar face influencing policy and legislation on relevant tech issues for the foreseeable future, which is something that doesn't come along everyday. Harris hasn't secured the Democratic nomination yet, but if she does, California could be in for some of its sunniest days yet.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Monday told investors how a possible Kamala Harris administration might affect the market, suggesting her policies would be better for megacaps and international outfits. "If you own many stocks of international companies and you want to vote your portfolio, Harris is more likely to help than hurt. After President Joe Biden bowed out of the 2024 race, he backed Vice President Harris for the Democratic nomination. Cramer said he could see Harris having close communication with Big Tech leaders.

Democrats Cleared the Path for Harris’s Nomination

Vice President Kamala Harris has already secured the endorsement of the vast majority of elected Democrats, just a day after President Biden made the stunning announcement that he was dropping his re-election bid. Few obvious challengers to her nomination remain, as the party anxiously looks to move past the divisions that have torn it apart for weeks. She also secured the backing of Nancy Pelosi, the former speaker of the House, who continues to wield considerable influence in the Democratic Party. A few other key Democrats, like Barack Obama, have so far not endorsed Harris. This morning, the vice president made her first public appearance since Biden ended his campaign.

CNN —President Joe Biden ran for reelection to save democracy. “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” Biden said in a letter he posted to X on Sunday afternoon. His struggles validated concerns of majorities of voters that he would be too old for a second term that would have ended when he is 86. But in the end, Biden could not find a way to make voters unsee the poignant picture of an 81-year-old commander in chief who appeared to have seriously declined and was stumbling in the debate. Years earlier, in March 1952, Harry S. Truman, another Democratic president, had decided not to seek his own second term.

Following Biden's endorsement, the president's reelection campaign committee rebranded itself to "Harris for President," handing her the keys to a $91 million war chest. Beyond seeking to upstage the first female vice president, other ambitious Democrats would have to raise their national profile in a way Harris does not. AdvertisementThe prospect of Harris' nomination is far from a political panacea for nervous Democrats. As leader of his party, Biden pushed the DNC to rubber stamp his plan to shake up the primary calendar. If the virtual vote moves forward, ambitious Democrats will face an even tighter window to organize opposition to Harris' nomination.
