More than 100 residents of Utica, N.Y., grieving the death of a 13-year-old boy who was fatally shot by a police officer there last week, gathered at a church on Sunday afternoon to demand accountability for his killing. The boy, Nyah Mway, was walking in the city with another boy on Friday night when they were stopped by three police officers. When one officer asked to pat them down, Nyah fled, footage from officers’ body-worn cameras shows. The police said in a statement that Nyah had displayed “what appeared to be a handgun” as he ran. Pride Month has always been about a political and progressive embrace of our rainbow of choices. Long before Oct. 7, 2023, Jewish progressives like me protested the Israeli occupation and preached a just two-state solution. I have helped to pioneer faith-led Pride programs that are grounded in Jewish values, fighting for freedom and liberation for all. So it’s painful to admit that I don’t feel welcome as my full self in many queer public places that once felt like home.

Five members of the same family who had been traveling for a baseball tournament were killed when their small plane crashed in upstate New York on Sunday afternoon, the authorities said. The plane, a single-engine Piper PA-46, crashed around 2 p.m. in a rural area in Delaware County, near Sidney, about 40 miles northeast of Binghamton, the Federal Aviation Administration said, killing all onboard. The plane wreckage was discovered Sunday night, the F.A.A. There were five people on the plane, state police said: Roger Beggs, 76; Laura VanEpps, 43; Ryan VanEpps, 42; James R. Just days after the body of Fahim Saleh, a successful tech entrepreneur, was found dismembered in his luxury condomiumium in Manhattan in July 2020, his former personal assistant, Tyrese Haspil, made a series of unsettling web searches. “Fahim Saleh.” “Murder of tech C.E.O. in New York.” “Dismembered body.”The search queries were just some of the chilling details that emerged during Mr. Haspil’s murder trial this month in Manhattan Criminal Court. And on Monday jurors convicted him of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from Mr. Saleh — and then killing him and cutting up his body in an effort to conceal what he had done. Parts of New England and the Northeast were under an unusual risk for tornadoes on Sunday as severe thunderstorms were expected to strike the region, forecasters said. The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch early Sunday afternoon for Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, northeastern New York and western Maine. More than 8 million people were under the watch, which signals that conditions could lead to severe storms or tornadoes. The watch is in effect until 8 p.m. The National Weather Service office in Albany, N.Y., warned of an enhanced risk of severe thunderstorms on Sunday afternoon and evening, and said such a risk was “more rare” for that part of the country.

ShotSpotter, a system the Police Department uses to detect gunfire, is overwhelmingly inaccurate and leads officers to spend hundreds of hours each month investigating nonexistent shots, according to an audit the New York City comptroller released Thursday. The Police Department has spent more than $45 million on ShotSpotter since it started using it in 2015, even as cities around the country have stopped using the system. New York must decide before December whether to renew its contract with SoundThinking, the California company that owns the system, and the audit advises officials to decline until the system can be fully evaluated. Of the 940 alerts officers responded to last June, only 13 percent corresponded to confirmed shootings. And in 2022, the audit found, the system also failed to detect more than 200 real incidents of gunfire in Manhattan.
