Luigi Mangione pleaded not guilty Monday to New York state charges in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, as his defense complained about police parading him in “perp walks” that are “perfectly choreographed, utterly political.”Mangione wore a white shirt under a maroon sweater and light colored pants in his arraignment before Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Gregory Carro. Manhattan prosecutors last week unsealed an 11-count indictment against Mangione, charging him with a host of crimes connected to the Dec. 4 slaying. Mangione pleaded not guilty to all charges. Luigi Mangione appears in Manhattan Supreme Court in New York on Dec. 23, 2024. Agnifilo places the blame for these "perp walks" on Mayor Eric Adams, calling these public parades of Mangione "absolutely unnecessary" and "perfectly choreographed, utterly political."

Shutdown averted’Twas the night before shutdown, and all through the House, a funding bill passed, assuaging all doubts. In a fiery speech Sunday, Trump laughed off the idea that he has “ceded the presidency” to the tech billionaire. Parts of the U.S. will be dashing through the snowParts of the United States might miss out on a white Christmas this year, but at least they might have a white Christmas Eve. There’s currently no forecast for a white Christmas, as many areas will see melted white blankets by Wednesday. Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, on Sunday compared tech mogul Elon Musk to a “prime minister,” praising Musk for speaking out against an early version of a stopgap funding bill last week. It feels like as if Elon Musk is our prime minister.”Gonzales added that he spoke with Musk “a couple of times” during a chaotic week for House Republicans as GOP leadership scrambled to pull together a package to fund the government that would garner support from a majority of the House GOP caucus. Shortly after Musk started speaking out against the bill, Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance released their own statement against the bill, tanking already wavering support for the bill among congressional Republicans. At a Turning Point USA event in Arizona, Trump downplayed concerns that Musk is usurping control from the president-elect. The lead-up into the holidays will be heavy on precipitation for many Americans as another storm system moves in across the Great Lakes and Northeast regions, bringing rain and snow in the days before Christmas. Those in the Northeast were already treated to snow on Saturday, the first day of winter, and are expected to get another few inches between Monday and Tuesday. Showers are expected for Northern California and Washington later this week and potential for snow in the area's mountain ranges. But it will be the interior Northeast, Michigan, and Wisconsin that are expected to receive anywhere between two to six inches of snow before Christmas Eve. The warmth is expected to spread over the week until the entire contiguous U.S. is feeling high or above average temperatures by Friday.

So her doctor suggested an alternative: a nonprofit called Sedera, which bills itself as a medical cost-sharing service. Sedera members pay monthly fees that get pooled together, and the organization can use the collected funds to reimburse members for medical bills. The model is somewhat akin to health insurance, but Sedera isn’t subject to the same regulations. The delivery had involved an induction, 40 hours of labor and ultimately a cesarean section — the kinds of complications that can send hospital bills skyrocketing. “The rug was pulled out from underneath us.”Sedera did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Less than a day after Trump named Kash Patel as his choice for FBI director, a former federal law enforcement official asked me a question: "curious if I'm on that list?" His definition of the 'deep state' appears to include the organization he hopes to lead. “One of the most cunning and powerful arms of the Deep State is the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” he wrote. “I have received calls from lifers who are putting in their papers,” said the former FBI official, who asked not to be named, citing fears of retaliation. That’s industrial rock, and for fans of German band KMFDM, it is the sweet spot between the freedom to express individuality and rebelling against a system of political corruption and injustice. The images show her wearing a black KMFDM band shirt while at a shooting range. The history of industrial rockThe first decade of industrial music was recognized as being “very experimental and very hard to listen to,” said industrial music expert Alexander Reed. Industrial music originated in the 1970s in northern England, Germany, and, to some extent, San Francisco before spreading all over the world. Around the mid-1980s, Reed says, industrial musicians began incorporating influences from dance music and rock ‘n’ roll, leading to KMFDM’s rise.

The court unanimously ruled that prison officials were liable for Eighth Amendment violations only if they acted with "deliberate indifference" to a prisoner's suffering. "And when this is true of prison officials, no constitutional liability may lie, however 'soul-chilling' the conditions." As long as prison officials assert that they didn't know about the risk, he said, a federal court will rarely find an Eighth Amendment violation. Prison officials weren't aware of the altercation, according to an incident report, until Hodges' then-fiancée called the prison, concerned about his safety. She disagreed with how her colleagues assessed the question of mindset, writing that a committee finding alone should not release prison officials from liability.

In order to pass the full House before the midnight shutdown deadline, however, the bill, released late Friday afternoon, will require significant Democratic support. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said he was committed to avoiding a shutdown that could jeopardize paychecks for hundreds of thousands of federal employees a few days before Christmas. "We will not have a government shutdown," Johnson told reporters in the Capitol Friday afternoon. It was not clear how Democrats, led by Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., would react to the standalone bill. "This is a bill that may find faith among enough Democrats to help the speaker of the House get the bill passed," said Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., a longtime party leader, on MSNBC's "Deadline White House."

The chamber voted Wednesday to let consideration of the bill — the Social Security Fairness Act — proceed. The bipartisan proposal calls for repealing certain rules that reduce Social Security benefits for individuals who receive pension income from work in the public sector. The WEP reduces Social Security benefits for individuals who receive pension or disability benefits from jobs where they did not pay Social Security payroll taxes. President Joe Biden on Tuesday sought to reassure the public on drones in East Coast states, saying there was nothing alarming about the increased reports of unmanned aircraft sightings. “Nothing nefarious, apparently," Biden told reporters at the White House. Still, the numerous sightings have sparked demands for more information across the political spectrum, including President-elect Donald Trump and Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul of New York and members of Congress amid conspiracy theories and rising public concern tied to the sightings. Obtained by NBC NewsMembers of the House Intelligence Committee received a closed-door briefing Tuesday afternoon on the drone sightings from intelligence officials.

Blank Social Security checks are run through a printer at the U.S. Treasury printing facility February 11, 2005 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The bill — the Social Security Fairness Act — would repeal provisions that reduce Social Security benefits for some individuals who also receive pension income from jobs in the public sector. What Social Security rules would be repealed? The WEP reduces Social Security benefit payments for individuals who also receive income from noncovered pensions — payments from employers who did not withhold Social Security taxes from their salaries. The Government Pension Offset was established in 1977 and reduces Social Security benefits for spouses and surviving spouses who receive a pension based on their own government work that wasn't subject to Social Security payroll taxes and Social Security spousal benefits based on their spouse's work record.

CLEVELAND — Fresh off a comfortable re-election victory in 2018, Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, considered running for president on a populist message aimed at the many working-class Midwest voters who had fled the Democratic Party in favor of Donald Trump. He spoke of a “post-Senate mission” to reorient Democrats as the “party of workers” in Middle America. “But I lost in large part because the national reputation of the Democratic Party is that we are sort of a lighter version of a corporation — a corporate party. And that’s one of the reasons that working-class voters have been willing to look away from the Democratic Party. Brown talks of NAFTA like it’s an original sin for his party — the moment Democrats began losing the working class.

WASHINGTON — As public concern has escalated over drones flying in the skies above New Jersey and other East Coast states, the White House wants Congress to pass legislation that would give greater authority to the federal, state and local governments to address drones that fly in U.S. airspace. “We do need better authorities to deal with that growing ecosystem of drones in U.S. airspace," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said Tuesday in an interview on NBC's "TODAY" show. Gaps exist in federal, state and local government authorities to deal with drones, Kirby said. “We know that there’s no national security threat. The bill was proposed last year by Sen. The U.S. Agriculture Department must take immediate action to secure the benefits cards from which low-income families are being robbed of grocery funds, six Democratic senators urged in a letter. But unlike consumer credit and debit cards, SNAP EBT cards lack security features such as microchips or tap-to-pay technology. “It’s unacceptable that hackers and scam artists are stealing food benefits that low-income families rely on to put food on the table,” Wyden said in a statement to NBC News. California, set to start rolling them out in early 2025, is the furthest along, an Agriculture Department spokesperson said. “We’re calling on the USDA to stop dragging their feet and modernize EBT cards with the same technology we’ve used for years on credit and debit cards.”

This article is part of “Dealing the Dead,” a series investigating the use of unclaimed bodies for medical research. “Particularly after he served his country.”Supplying unclaimed bodies for medical research is widely considered unethical, and most major medical schools — and a few states — have halted the practice. NBC News spent months documenting the use of unclaimed bodies in medical research, submitting public records requests to dozens of state agencies, county coroners and medical schools. That included Pennsylvania, where an official said the body-donation program could not share how the 58 unclaimed bodies were used. He wants to see more regulation of the body donation industry and has written guidelines that call for donation programs to stop using unclaimed bodies.

The numerous drone sightings by members of the public in East Coast states are not out of the ordinary and do not pose “a national security or public safety risk,” the FBI and three other federal agencies said in a joint statement Monday night. Obtained by NBC NewsThe statement also said reports of drone sightings over military facilities "are not new." Monday's statement echoes one in which the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security said last week that they had "no evidence" at the time that the drone sightings in New Jersey posed a threat. Kathy Hochul and some members of Congress have demanded more information from federal officials amid conspiracy theories and rising public concern tied to the sightings. Officials from the FBI, the CIA and the national intelligence director’s office will provide the briefing at 2 p.m.
