For young, secular, politically progressive men and women, having children has become something of an afterthought. Indeed, the data suggest that people are having children later than they used to and are having fewer than they’d like. Unreserved enthusiasm for having children can come across as essentially reactionary. Over the past four years, we’ve conducted interviews and surveys with hundreds of young Americans about their attitudes toward having children. If they are not, they face a choice of returning to the dating pool, freezing their eggs (if they haven’t done so already), single parenting or giving up their hope of having kids of their own.

So when photographer Juergen Teller and his wife and creative partner Dovile Drizyte were trying for a baby while on vacation in Sicily two years ago, Teller recommended the practise. Juergen TellerTeller is known for his matter-of-fact, improvisational aesthetic in commercial fashion campaigns, and had previously photographed at the hotel. Juergen TellerDrizyte “had to be very serene,” Teller said of the shoot, which he called both physically and mentally exhausting. “The maids were coming and cleaning these rooms and taking beds out.”“Guests disappeared and it became more ghostlike,” Teller added.

Opinion | The Gender Pay Gap Is a Culture Problem
  + stars: | 2024-05-22 | by ( Jessica Grose | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
American women made significant progress toward closing the gender pay gap in the second half of the 20th century, but that gap has barely budged over the past two decades. In 2022, according to Pew Research, “American women typically earned 82 cents for every dollar earned by men. While there are several factors at play, one of the key contributors to the gap is what’s known as the motherhood penalty and the corresponding fatherhood premium: Women’s pay decreases when they have children, while men’s pay increases. Somewhat surprisingly to me, his research, which builds on years of earlier scholarship, suggests that a country’s family policy has relatively little to do with how big the parenthood pay gap is. A society’s culture and norms seem to be much bigger factors in how big the motherhood penalty is: The more egalitarian the culture, the lower the gap.

For those in the daily grind, that is probably hard to understand, but as a stay-at-home mom, there are things that I miss about having a job to go to every day. Things like getting dressed and having conversations with someone above the age of 6, for one, but also things like doing work that is validated by society. I felt like I needed to explain the gap in my resuméOnce I finished editing my résumé, I couldn't help feel the need to explain more about what I have been doing as a stay-at-home mom. Related storiesJust the term "stay-at-home" mom makes me cringe because it immediately brings up these images of a woman sitting in her house to mind. Yet here I am, just hoping someone will read between the lines on my résumé on everything that means to be "just" a mom.

I got engaged at 23 and married my college sweetheart in a big church wedding. I didn't like how that felt, seeing last names that didn't match. To this day, I still sometimes get cards in the mail from family members addressed to Danielle James or even Danielle Hayden James, his last name tacked on right after my own. That doesn't make them any less "in love" or any less of a family unit. And once, when we rented a car, an employee didn't believe we were married and, therefore, both were permitted to drive, despite our wedding rings and my insistence.

Years ago, in what feels like another life, I elected to trade my freedoms to be a housewife because my then-husband said it was the right thing to do. I would never wish this experience to be insisted on anyone, especially knowing everything I do now. My ex-husband insisted I didn't need to worry about things because he would care for me. But 15 years after my marriage, I'm still trying to compensate for the time and heart lost in that one decision. If I had a time machine, I would, without hesitation, go back and change my choice of being a housewife in my 20s.

The notion that women can have it all is the "biggest lie" working women are told that, if believed, can stunt their success, according to Bonnie Hammer, vice chairman at NBCUniversal. In her new book, "15 Lies Women Are Told at Work," Hammer explores the conflicting advice women are given regarding professional success. To the Editor:Re “An Act of Defiance Can Improve Things for Working Moms,” by Toby Kiers (Opinion guest essay, May 4):I am a woman nearing the completion of my B.A. in philosophy, and I have the absurd hopes of going on to get my Ph.D. and work in academia and also have a family. Dr. Kiers’s essay both shed light on the frustrating reality of the discrimination that mothers face in the world of academic research, and provided a shining beacon of hope to counteract it. Dr. Kiers has called this out; this is not actually a choice we have to make. Motherhood is not a detriment to our academic abilities and research contributions; it actually strengthens it in new and unexpected ways.

CNN —Flowers and brunch are lovely for Mother’s Day, but there’s an invaluable gift almost every mom would enjoy: a healthier body image. But almost all postpartum moms, celebrity or not, face an unspoken mandate to “bounce back” to their pre-baby body. If moms feel preoccupied with their appearance, exercise or what they eat (even “healthy eating”), it could be a sign of significant maternal mental health problems. “The body isn’t what it was before. Awareness of these external diet culture directives can help moms start to push back against unrealistic and harmful ideals.

Mother's Day has always made me uncomfortable. But on Mother's Day especially, I wonder, what exactly is the point of all this sentimental excess, and just what are we meant to be celebrating? The day seems to perpetuate bad things about being a motherTo me, Mother's Day perpetuates some of our culture's worst ideas about mothers and women. Getting a traditional Mother's Day gift means I am still doing chores that day. But when it comes to celebrating Mother's Day, there's just one thing I want, and it's not a bath bomb, candle, or picture frame. For Mother's Day, I really just want time by myself away from my girls. Mother's Day is about showing appreciation for everything moms do, but it's also a day meant for reflecting on motherhood. Having time away for Mother's Day would remind me that despite the endless chores and messes and tears, being a mom really is the best.

Editor’s Note: Kara Alaimo, an associate professor of communication at Fairleigh Dickinson University, writes about issues affecting women and social media. According to research published last year by Pew Research Center, men who have children out-earn childless men. Lauren Smith Brody, founder of The Fifth Trimester, told me the survey results are consistent with what she has seen in her work coaching moms. As moms, many of us have to become expert at interviewing and hiring in order to find quality childcare providers. Of course, if only a few women add the title of mom to their resumes, they might be discounted by ignorant employers.
