In a sea of income-generating exchange-traded funds, BlackRock 's actively managed Flexible Income ETF (BINC) seeks to stand out with a multisector approach that balances high quality and high yield. "The way we built this portfolio is marrying high yield, investment-grade credit, agency mortgages and securitized [products]," Rieder said in an interview. Rieder said he's investing more in European high yield these days because of the strong U.S. dollar. "That is really attractive — and European high yield is cheaper than U.S.," he said. In U.S. high yield, single-B-rated debt is the most attractive, the investor said.

The S & P 500 Health Care Sector index has outperformed the broader S & P 500 in just three of the past eight presidential election years dating back to 1992, according to FactSet data. Investors poured cash into these fixed income ETFs in 2023

The Federal Reserve's monetary policy set the tone for the fixed income world in 2023 – right down to which exchange traded funds investors picked to take advantage of higher interest rates. Bond yields have an inverse relationship to their prices, so that when prices decline, yields rise and vice versa. The Vanguard Long-Term Treasury ETF (VGLT) was another favorite of investors, with about $7.3 billion in net flows in 2023. Indeed, those strategies proved popular with investors in 2023, as the Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF (BND) and iShares Core U.S. Aggregate Bond ETF (AGG) were ETFs with the second and third highest net flows, per Morningstar.

With interest rates expected to come down in 2024, real estate — a sector beloved for its steady income payments — could see upside in the new year. "When rates are low, a lot of income-oriented investors see that REIT dividend as very attractive, and they are willing to take the risks associated with equity investment to have this dividend payment." Jefferies is neutral on the office REIT sector but has raised its rating on Boston Properties to buy from hold. The senior housing occupancy rate was 84.4% in the third quarter of 2023, according to the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing & Care . That's up more than 6 percentage points from the pandemic low of 77.8%, but it's still off from the pre-pandemic occupancy rate of 87.1%.

By contrast, the other intermediate-term fund on the Morningstar FundInvestor 500 list, PIMCO Investment Grade Credit Bond fund, has more than 10% in high yield, according to Morningstar. "That's why having that exposure to investment grade corporate bonds … at this point in the cycle is a tremendous value," he added. Meanwhile, the assets in the fund that are high yield are what Narayanan calls high quality, "mispriced securities." Those are the types of names that have recently been upgraded back into the investment grade space," he said. That's a far-cry from where many Wall Street pros thought stocks would end the year. Others, like analysts at Bank of America, BMO, and Deutsche Bank believe the market could roar to new all-time highs . Rather than try to guess where the market is heading next, investors would be better off finding high-quality stocks to invest in for the long run. Thankfully, Morningstar's Margaret Giles recently compiled a list of the stocks to buy now, drawn from analysts' larger collection of the best companies to own. These stocks have "predictable cash flows and are run by management teams that have a history of making smart capital-allocation decisions," she wrote.

Not every corner of the plant-based food industry has been burned. After the boom-and-bust cycle of Beyond Meat stock, analysts have wondered what comes next for the plant-based food space. The alternative protein market Beyond Meat's struggles have left some skeptical about which companies have what it takes to meet the needs of consumers who want to avoid animal-based products for health or environmental reasons. After topping $230 per share at its highest point, Beyond Meat stock now trades below $7. There's a business argument beyond the alternative protein market that can bode well when forecasting demand, Morningstar's Goldstein said.

Wall Street is set to wrap up a strong month next week as stocks gun for new highs heading into year end. The Nasdaq Composite is on pace to close out the month with a double-digit advance, up 10%. In contrast to September and October, which are typically weak periods for stocks, the seasonal patterns are now in favor of equities. This week, LPL Financial's Adam Turnquist pointed out that more than half, or 55%, of S & P 500 stocks closed above their 200-day moving average. It's set to show a rise of 0.2%, down from the 0.7% rise in the prior month, according to FactSet consensus estimates.

After being on the market for more than a decade, defined maturity bond funds are finally attracting attention. Traditional open end, bond mutual funds or bond ETFs, on the other hand, have no maturity date. One big advantage over owning individual bonds, however, is that defined maturity ETFs are easy to purchase on the stock exchange. How they work Each defined maturity bond fund holds securities in the same sector that come due in the calendar year chosen for the fund. Callable bonds are simply those that can be redeemed or paid off by the issuer prior to the bonds' maturity date, according to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Morningstar estimates fair value based on its projection of a company's future cash flows and the predictability of those flows. Morningstar just published its Q4 Markets Observer note. The firm highlighted cities where home prices are rising and falling the most. Many high-flying markets that saw massive relative appreciation in the pandemic era are now cooling off in a big way, while those that saw more tepid gains are still plugging along. In Morningstar's Q4 Markets Observer note published this week, the firm used National Association of Realtors data to highlight cities in the US seeing the highest appreciation right now, as well as those where prices are falling the fastest. They found that more affordable markets are performing better from Q2 2022 to Q2 2023.

BlackRock's Rick Rieder said this week that while the economy is slowing, he believes it can rebound. "I call the U.S. economy, the polyurethane economy because it flexes, adjusts like a Tempur-Pedic bed. It can take some pretty significant shots, and it just rebounds," Rieder told CNBC's "ETF Edge" on Monday. Rieder, who also oversees BlackRock's Global Allocation team, thinks that people are still going to buy equities despite the current demand for Treasury bonds. I don't think so, but I think equities will do their job.

Startups operating at the intersection of climate tech and fintech are attracting a lot of investor attention right now. The so-called "climate fintech" sector is another such area that has seen investment tick up against the backdrop of the broader malaise that has hobbled the startup ecosystem, according to investors. Climate fintech is also a software play so it has the ability to scale quickly and efficiently, which is a sweet spot for most VC investors, Morgenthaler added. Today's higher interest rate environment drives home the reason why investors should scrutinize stocks offering tempting double-digit yields. Digging beneath the surface Multiple factors may contribute to a stock touting high dividend yields at first blush. First, there are dividend sustainers – companies that have made steady payments for years, including Merck , Johnson & Johnson and Southern Co . Investors who want to hunt dividend payers shouldn't go for the biggest yielders, but instead look for names that are in the second or third quintile among dividend payers, he said. Big Tobacco turns to rooibos tea to counter upcoming ban

Tobacco companies have yet to publish any research showing the health implications of rooibos or other zero-tobacco sticks, Simonavicius added. PMI (PM.N) CEO Jacek Olczak told shareholders that its zero-tobacco sticks could avoid the regulatory scrutiny that tobacco products face. BAT's zero-tobacco sticks are not subject to current EU tobacco rules, the company told Reuters. That means it can sell rooibos sticks in flavours like peppermint and tropical fruit even after a ban on flavoured heated tobacco products is implemented across the bloc later this month. Across the European Union, heated tobacco products must be taxed at a minimum of 20% of the retail price, though national governments can go higher.

Semiconductors are looking undervalued, thanks to the selloff in some parts of the sector, according to Morningstar. That's even more undervalued than the wider tech sector, which it believes is 5% undervalued. Morningstar noted such stocks have sold off a little in September, especially in analog and mixed signal names — two types of chips in the semiconductor industry — and even in artificial intelligence chipmakers. Outside the AI sector, the firm also likes autos, expecting more chips to be used in cars, especially electric vehicles, in the years to come.
