Until this week’s debate in Philadelphia, though, she planned to honor her conservative principles and write in some other Republican. Her decision to back Vice President Kamala Harris was the most significant shift in the reaction we received from this group of voters during the debate and in its immediate aftermath. “Trump came off as irrational and desperate.”Vice President Kamala Harris speaks during the presidential debate at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia on September 10. WASHINGTON — Despite mounting opposition from his own party, Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., vowed Tuesday to stay the course and put his government funding package on the House floor on Wednesday. His initial strategy to avert a government shutdown at the end of the month is expected to fail and deal House Republicans an embarrassing blow. Due to their paper-thin majority, Republicans can afford only a handful of GOP defections on the vote, and many more than that have publicly voiced their opposition. “I am in this to win this,” Johnson told reporters at his weekly news conference. Afterward, the speaker added: “We are going to put the SAVE Act and the CR together, and we’re going to move that through the process.

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Mike Johnson’s strategy to tie a short-term government funding bill to a Donald Trump-backed proposal to overhaul voting laws was on life support Monday after a band of conservative rebels vowed to vote no on the package. Without a stopgap funding bill, money will run out and the federal government will shut down at the end of the month. Because of the GOP’s razor-thin majority, Johnson, R-La., can afford only four Republican defections if all members vote. Mills slammed Johnson's strategy as a “farce” and said it would do nothing to secure the southern border. Instead, they are pushing for a "clean CR" — short-term funding with nothing attached to it.

Concerns about the use of cryptocurrencies for illegal activity resulted in an effective ban on crypto mining and transactions. After a massive public outcry at the end of 2021, mining companies in Kazakhstan were effectively cut off from the grid. Today, the US makes up about 40% of the global hashrate — up from 17% during China's 2021 peak — making America the biggest hub for bitcoin mining. However, in recent years, bitcoin mining has become increasingly concentrated in the hands of a small number of private companies. Given how much energy bitcoin mining consumes, it's worth questioning whether its presence in the US is really worth the trade-off.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Jury selection was scheduled to begin Monday in the federal trial of three former Memphis officers charged with violating the civil rights of Tyre Nichols, the 29-year-old man whose fatal beating was caught on police cameras while also triggering protests and calls for police reform. Officers caught up with Nichols and pummeled him in a Memphis neighborhood, police video showed. An autopsy report showed Nichols died from blows to the head and that the manner of death was homicide. The three officers now facing trial, along with Emmitt Martin III and Desmond Mills Jr., were fired after Nichols’ death for violating Memphis Police Department policies. Mills and Martin both have pleaded guilty in federal court and they could testify in the trial.

Washington CNN —Former President Donald Trump and Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance continue to falsely describe how one of their major policy proposals, across-the-board tariffs, would work. Trump has falsely, and repeatedly, claimed that China – not US importers – pay the tariff. Facts First: Trump and Vance’s claims about how tariffs work are false. Together, the price increases cost consumers more than $1.5 billion during the first year the tariffs were in place. It’s true that after Trump imposed tariffs on foreign-made steel, some American steel companies reopened mills and created new jobs.

New York CNN —US Steel is threatening to shutter a number of mills if the Biden administration blocks its sale to would-be Japanese buyer Nippon Steel. But another rival, Cleveland Cliffs, is offering to buy those mills from US Steel if President Joe Biden stops the deal. But those objections could be lessened if the alternative to Cleveland Cliffs buying the mills was their closure. New York CNN —Most of the 10,000 hotel workers who went on strike during the busy Labor Day weekend have returned to work Wednesday, but one group of 700 union members in San Diego will stay on strike for the foreseeable future. Those workers, employed at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, will remain on strike until there is a contract agreement, their union, Unite Here, says. The union has not ruled out using the same rolling strikes strategy this time, or expanding the strike to other locations. The strategy is intended to help workers keep as many days of pay as possible during a contract negotiation. Beyond the hotel workers, limited duration strikes have been used to win labor deals for school employees in Los Angeles, health care workers at Kaiser Permanente, janitors, nursing home employees and other workers in Minnesota who went on strike together in March.

US Steel and Nippon Steel both indicated in statements that they’re open to legal fights to get the deal approved, no matter what actions is announced by Biden. Shares of US Steel (X) closed down 17.5% on the news at $29.37, well below the $55 a share that Nippon Steel agreed to pay for the stock back in December when the deal was announced. US Steel said the future of this and other union-represented plants at the company are at risk unless it gets approval to be purchased by Nippon Steel. US Steel says it has more than 3,000 employees in the state in its remaining steel mills along the Monongahela River just outside of Pittsburgh. The union says it doesn’t believe in the promises made by Nippon Steel so far and that it remains opposed to the purchase.

CNN —A second former Memphis police officer facing federal civil rights charges in the violent arrest and beating death of Tyre Nichols changed his plea to guilty on Friday in federal court. Mills and Martin are among five former officers charged in the death of Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man. He admitted he “willfully used unreasonable force against Tyre Nichols,” “aided and abetted” other officers in assaulting Nichols and “failed to intervene” in other officers’ use of force. Police said the unit was permanently deactivated shortly after Nichols’ death. The beating and Nichols’ death led to protests and vigils in Memphis and other major US cities, reigniting the contentious debate over policing and the ways that law enforcement treat Black people.
