In the three days since President Biden announced he was quitting the 2024 race, Mr. Trump has entered foreign territory. But within 24 hours, Democratic leaders unofficially crowned Ms. Harris and stamped out any notable opposition. His team considered mounting legal challenges to her campaign committee to make it harder for Ms. Harris to hit the ground running. And Mr. Trump is still cycling through nicknames for Ms. Harris — a sign that he hasn’t yet figured out how he intends to portray her. And some Trump campaign officials have telegraphed plans to “Willie Horton” Ms. Harris.

Gavin Newsom of California, had previously said he would not challenge Ms. Harris. He often rambles incoherently in interviews and at campaign rallies and has confused names, dates and facts just as Mr. Biden has. Mr. Biden consistently maintained that his experience was an advantage, enabling him to pass landmark legislation and manage foreign policy crises. He maintained that he was the Democrat best equipped to defeat Mr. Trump given that he did so in 2020. On the international front, Mr. Biden revitalized international alliances that frayed under Mr. Trump, rallying much of the world to stand against Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

Vice President Kamala Harris, who has struggled for nearly four years in President Biden’s shadow, was thrust on Sunday into the center of a remarkable political drama that could culminate with her becoming the first Black woman at the top of a major-party presidential ticket. Mr. Biden’s decision to abandon his re-election bid and endorse Ms. Harris to succeed him puts her in a powerful, but not certain, position to become the new face of the Democratic Party, charged with preventing former President Donald J. Trump from returning to the Oval Office for another four years. “Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump,” Mr. Biden wrote in a social media post after he announced his decision to step aside. “Let’s do this.”Ms. Harris and her team are likely to move swiftly to try to seize that mantle even as uncertainty swirled about whether other Democrats would seek to challenge her for the nomination at the party’s convention in Chicago next month.

Nothing President Biden did seemed to work. He delivered an angry, defensive rant on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” He showed foreign policy chops at a news conference. He wrote a long letter to “fellow Democrats” demanding an end to the calls for him to step aside. Mr. Biden was racing from place to place, but nothing was changing. Most spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss one of the most difficult periods in Mr. Biden’s political life.

Even before the debate, Mr. Biden had told confidants that he believed he had a far better chance than Ms. Harris of beating Mr. Trump. By making the case for himself publicly and privately, Mr. Biden has implicitly had to downplay her chances of winning. Image Mr. Biden arriving in Dover, Del., late Wednesday night, on his way to spend time at his home in Rehoboth Beach. “She’s not only a great vice president,” Mr. Biden said at the N.A.A.C.P. Sick with Covid and abandoned by allies, President Biden has been fuming at his Delaware beach house, increasingly resentful about what he sees as an orchestrated campaign to drive him out of the race and bitter toward some of those he once considered close, including his onetime running mate Barack Obama. Mr. Biden has been around politics long enough to assume that the leaks appearing in the media in recent days are being coordinated to raise the pressure on him to step aside, according to people close to him. He considers Representative Nancy Pelosi, the former House speaker, the main instigator, but is irritated at Mr. Obama as well, seeing him as a puppet master behind the scenes. It was Mr. Obama who elevated Mr. Biden from a presidential also-ran to the vice presidency, setting him up to win the White House in 2020, and it was Ms. Pelosi and Senator Chuck Schumer, the Senate Democratic leader, who pushed through his landmark legislative achievements. But several people close to Mr. Biden, who insisted on anonymity to discuss internal matters, described an under-the-weather president coughing and hacking hundreds of miles from the corridors of power as his presidency meets its most perilous moment.

The seeds of President Biden’s reaction to the Democratic Party’s crisis of confidence in him were planted years ago. Facing an extraordinary push by his friends and allies to end his political career, Mr. Biden has responded with defiance. For three weeks he has dug in, denied polling evidence and vowed to stay in the race, claiming that he is the only one who can defeat former President Donald J. Trump. Only in the last few days have people close to him said they believe he is more receptive to stepping down. To many of his allies, he is in a surprising crouch for a politician who has built his identity on service to country over self.

Joe Scarborough, the former congressman, ally of President Biden and influential host of the MSNBC show “Morning Joe,” on Thursday morning all but called on Mr. Biden’s aides to help him exit the race. On the same day, California Senate candidate and Pelosi ally Adam Schiff publicly called on Mr. Biden to leave the race. Look at the events of yesterday, the events of the last three weeks.”He added: “The anger that I hear is not at Joe Biden. Several people close to President Biden said on Thursday that they believe he has begun to accept the idea that he may not be able to win in November and may have to drop out of the race, bowing to the growing demands of many anxious members of his party. One of the people close to him warned that the president had not yet made up his mind to leave the race after three weeks of insisting that almost nothing would drive him out. But another said that “reality is setting in,” and that it would not be a surprise if Mr. Biden made an announcement soon endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as his replacement. Mr. Biden remained in isolation at his vacation home in Rehoboth Beach, Del., after being diagnosed with Covid on Wednesday. But there was also caution about reading signs from a president with an exceedingly small circle of confidants.

President Biden tested positive for Covid on Wednesday, according to the White House, forcing him to cancel an event in Las Vegas and likely sidelining him for days following the conclusion of former President Donald J. Trump’s nominating convention on Thursday. Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House press secretary, said in a statement that “earlier today, following his first event in Las Vegas, President Biden tested positive for COVID-19.” She added that “he is vaccinated and boosted and he is experiencing mild symptoms.”She said Mr. Biden would travel from Las Vegas to Delaware, where he would self-isolate. “The White House will provide regular updates on the president’s status as he continues to carry out the full duties of the office while in isolation,” she added. Mr. Biden leaned out of his limousine as he arrived at Air Force One to fly back to Delaware and gave reporters a thumbs-up. When they asked how he was feeling, he replied: “Good.

President Biden said on Monday it was “a mistake” to say that he wanted to put former President Donald J. Trump back in “a bull’s-eye” but defended his descriptions of his rival in the 2024 election as a threat to the foundations of the nation’s democracy. “Do you just not say anything because it may incite somebody?” he asked. The president’s comments come just two days after a would-be assassin shot at Mr. Trump at a rally in western Pennsylvania, grazing the former president’s ear and killing one of his supporters. Republicans have accused Mr. Biden of stoking violence against Mr. Trump, pointing to a comment that the president made last week to donors. He told them that “we’re done talking about the debate; it’s time to put Trump in a bull’s-eye.”

Read previewAs details emerge about the background of the man who tried to assassinate Donald Trump, his motive remains a mystery. The shooter, who has been named Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, tried to kill Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania. In 2022, he graduated from Bethel Park High School with a prize for math and science, which was also awarded to around a dozen other students, reported the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. AdvertisementDuring a brief press conference from the White House, President Joe Biden said investigators had not yet determined Crooks' motive. The FBI told the AP he appeared to have acted alone and had bomb-making materials in the vehicle he drove to the rally.

President Biden said in a prime-time Oval Office address on Sunday that the nation needed to “lower the temperature in our politics,” saying that he deplored the attempted assassination of former President Donald J. Trump and feared for the direction of the country’s politics. “We cannot, we must not, go down this road in America,” he said, using the backdrop of the office for only the third time in his presidency. “There is no place in America for this kind of violence, for any violence, ever. No exceptions. Republicans said the convention would proceed as planned, and Mr. Trump flew to Milwaukee on Sunday afternoon, vowing to remain “defiant in the face of wickedness.”

Former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden. If you average the national polls since the debate 15 days ago, Trump’s ahead by 3 points. Biden and Trump’s own history should make you think twice about calling wraps on this race as well. Biden was ahead by 9 points in the early July national polls in 2020. If you average the national polls since the debate 15 days ago, Trump’s ahead by 3 points. An NPR/PBS News/Marist College poll out Friday morning even put the race at 50% for Biden to 48% for Trump (a result within the margin of error). Biden was ahead by 9 points in the early July national polls in 2020. I think it’s totally fair to say that Trump is the favorite and that Biden has his work cut out for him. There is also data to suggest that Vice President Kamala Harris would be a stronger Democratic nominee against Trump than Biden.

President Biden on Friday told a Democratic lawmaker who called for him to step aside that voters should “touch me, poke me, ask me questions” if they have doubts about his ability to serve in the Oval Office or defeat former President Donald J. Trump in November. Mr. Biden made the remarks during a virtual meeting with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, according to a partial transcript of the exchange obtained by The New York Times. He was responding to Representative Mike Levin of California, who told Mr. Biden during the meeting that he believed the president should not continue his bid for another term, according to two people familiar with the call. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it. “That’s why I’m going out and letting people touch me, poke me, ask me questions,” Mr. Biden told Mr. Levin.

President Biden will face a moment of high stakes in his campaign for a second term on Thursday evening when he engages with reporters in an unscripted news conference at the end of a three-day NATO summit. Mr. Biden’s performance could either quiet critics or invite a wave of new calls for him to step aside. A hasty exit, with journalists calling out after him, could fuel more concerns about Mr. Biden’s stamina and capacity to handle tough questioning. Just the fact that Mr. Biden agreed to hold the event speaks to the pressure he is facing to prove his contention that the shaky debate was an anomaly. At this point in his term, Mr. Biden has held fewer news conferences than any president since Ronald Reagan.

A handful of states, including Texas and Nevada, have set up dedicated systems designed to restore tenants to their homes after an illegal lockout. She and her family still don't have a new apartment, she said, and the eviction cases on her record don't help. BI reviewed two years' worth of lockout cases from the department and found city lawyers routinely dismissed tickets, often without documenting why. Bridget Bennett for Business InsiderThat afternoon, Brown had three cases on his docket in which tenants were alleging they'd been illegally locked out and dozens of cases in which landlords were seeking formal evictions. In 2022, Miami-Dade County passed a tenant's bill of rights that underlines the illegality of lockouts and limits a landlord's ability to harass tenants.
