Reinvigorated Astros search for sweep of Guardians
  + stars: | 2023-08-02 | by ( Field Level Media | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
August 2 - Roughly 24 hours after saying he found it "disheartening" to watch other American League contenders complete trades that bolstered their rosters, Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker experienced a change of heart on Tuesday. The Astros will aim for a three-game series sweep on Wednesday afternoon. Prior to Valdez's gem in the Astros' 2-0 victory over the Guardians, Houston reacquired right-hander Justin Verlander from the New York Mets in a deal that sent out a pair of outfield prospects. "When you're going to acquire someone like a Justin Verlander, you're going to have to give up something," Astros general manager Dana Brown said. He's done a good job throughout his entire career, so at the end of the day, you're going to have to give up some players to get good players."

The Mets’ superfan owner, Steven A. Cohen, committed nearly half a billion dollars this season to learn a timeless lesson easily forgotten when pursuing World Series glory: Money guarantees nothing. Early Friday morning, the Mets shipped the team’s closer, David Robertson, to the Miami Marlins for two teenage prospects. As part of the deal, Scherzer will exercise his $43.3 million player option for 2024. “We put ourselves in this position,” Scherzer told reporters at Citi Field on Friday after beating Washington, the only team trailing the Mets in the National League East. I’ve had a hand in that for why we’re in the position that we’re at.

The Lost Art of Fouling the Ball Off (on Purpose)

In his junior year, he took 248 trips to the plate and struck out only three times. LePage never made it past Class A in the minor leagues, but a few guys in the majors still remember him fondly. “He could foul the ball straight back during batting practice on command,” Ahmed said. “Just a different level of bat control.”Like many college standouts, LePage could not find his footing in pro ball. Over the last decade, as teams have chased exit velocity and the long ball, the value of such high-contact, low-impact hitters has tanked.

March 31 (Reuters) - The number of players born outside the United States that featured on Opening Day rosters dipped 2% to 269 compared to last year, Major League Baseball (MLB) said on Friday. The number of internationally-born players represents 28.5% of a total pool of 945 players and trails only the 2020 (291) and 2022 (275) seasons. As has been the case each year since MLB began releasing the data in 1995, the Dominican Republic led the way among countries and territories outside the United States with 104 players, its second-highest total since 2020 (110). For the third consecutive season, the Houston Astros have the most internationally-born players with 16, followed by the Minnesota Twins (15), San Diego Padres (15), Miami Marlins (13) and New York Yankees (13). Home base planFor the baseball fan looking to watch as many games as possible, a traditional pay TV service is still the go-to place. Discovery' s TBS, as well as Fox Corp. 's broadcast and pay TV networks, take up a decent chunk of the schedule. However, as more options are introduced, regional sports networks are getting fewer games and fans have to pay more to watch all games. With a higher rate of consumers dropping pay TV bundles and opting for streaming services, many networks have created direct-to-consumer streaming app options. Few offset the pay TV losses, but at least provide an option for fans wanting to stream.
Are you ready for some ... SlamBall? A star-studded lineup of investors in and around sports are jumping into the sport, which is a mashup of football, basketball and trampolines that was buzzy for a short time in the early 2000s. The investment comes as SlamBall plans to relaunch this summer, more than 20 years after the alternative sport was shut down in the U.S. as ratings fell in its second season. SlamBall recently closed an $11 million Series A funding round led by Roger Ehrenberg's IA Sports Ventures and Eberg Capital, a stakeholder in MLB's Miami Marlins. It took founder and CEO Mason Gordon and Mike Tollin – a producer behind the popular Chicago Bulls docuseries "The Last Dance" who helped launch the league the first time – nine months to secure their full roster of investors.

The Miami Marlins will be led by two of the highest-ranking women in professional sports. The organization announced on Monday that owner Bruce Sherman is promoting Caroline O'Connor to president of business operations, effective immediately. The move makes the Marlins the first pro sports team to have women operating the entirety of the team's day-to-day business.
