REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File PhotoJuly 24 (Reuters) - Meme stocks have surged in the last few weeks as retail investors shun pricier stocks for cheaper speculative names, but some experts worry that this could choke the current rally in broader markets. At a time when the wider rally has made some stocks, especially in the tech space, too expensive, the return of meme stocks is offering retail investors a more affordable option to participate in 2023's market rebound and pocket big returns. Roundhill's Meme index (.MEME) hit a one-year high last week and was last up 60% for 2023 so far, dwarfing gains of more than 18% recorded by the benchmark S&P 500 (.SPX). Retail investors poured in $1.27 billion per day on average into U.S. equities in July, closing in on the all-time record of $1.5 billion a day in March, Vanda Research said. The meme index consists of 25 equal-weighted U.S.-listed stocks with a combination of elevated social media activity and high short interest.

JERUSALEM, July 24 (Reuters) - Israeli financial markets tumbled on Monday, with the shekel hitting a two-week low versus the dollar, after lawmakers ratified the first bill of a judicial overhaul sought by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In protest at the vote, a forum of some 150 of Israel's largest companies held a strike on Monday. Azrieli (AZRG.TA) and Big (BIG.TA), two of Israel's largest malls, said stores in their shopping centres would be closed. But news that compromise talks collapsed erased early gains and sent the shekel weaker, with losses deepening after the vote. The shekel has weakened some 10% versus the dollar since late January when the government unveiled its controversial judicial overhaul plan, setting off mass protests and harming foreign inflows.

July 19 (Reuters) - Three major U.S. regional banks met or beat profit expectations on Wednesday as higher interest rates allowed them to charge more for loans, while deposits stabilized, sending shares across the sector up. Investors have been anxiously awaiting regional bank second quarter earnings as they look for reassurance that the turmoil that rocked the sector earlier this year has finally passed. July 14 (Reuters) - JPMorgan Chase (JPM.N) reported a bigger-than-expected jump in second-quarter profit as it earned more from borrowers' interest payments and benefited from the purchase of First Republic Bank. The bank bought a majority of failed First Republic Bank's assets in a government-backed deal in May after weeks of industry turbulence. That bolstered its net interest income (NII), which measures the difference between what banks earn on loans and pay out on deposits. The bank's NII, which has also been gaining from high interest rates, was $21.9 billion, up 44%, or up 38% excluding First Republic. JPMorgan plans to cut around 500 jobs across different divisions, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters in May.
