Another top aide to New York City mayor resigns amid federal probe

Embattled New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Monday that he's accepted the resignation of his deputy mayor for public safety, Philip Banks, the latest senior official to leave as the mayor fends off an indictment and calls to step down. All three Banks brothers have denied wrongdoing. An attorney for Philip Banks, Benjamin Brafman, said Monday that federal prosecutors had assured him his client was not a target of the investigation. In addition to seizing the phones of the three Banks brothers, federal investigators also took devices from the city's police commissioner, Edward Caban, and one of Adams' closest aides, Timothy Pearson. At a press briefing last month, Adams spoke of his close ties to the Banks brothers.

CNN —The mayor of a crime-ridden city in Mexico has been killed less than a week after taking office, the latest in a string of violent attacks targeting politicians in the country. However, the violence facing Mexican politicians stretches far beyond Guerrero, as was demonstrated by the historic June 2 election that took Sheinbaum to power. With 20,000 electoral positions up for grabs, the scale of bloodshed committed by those attempting to influence the vote was unprecedented. Just hours after Sheinbaum’s election, the woman mayor of a town in western Mexico was shot dead. It says that criminal gangs often finance campaigns during election season, intimidating candidates and violently intervening to compel politicians to cooperate with them.

Traffic outside the Central Bank of Brazil headquarters in Brasilia, Brazil, on Monday, June 17, 2024. Marçal, an anti-establishment political novice who has surged in the polls with his vitriolic attacks on adversaries, ran a social media campaign with little funding and no TV time. Polls showed that candidates linked to Lula are facing trouble as the president's popularity has slipped in his third non-consecutive term. On the right, candidates associated with hard-right former President Jair Bolsonaro have fared better, even though he was banned from seeking elected office until 2030 for his unfounded attacks on Brazil's voting system. "The anti-establishment views of the right have become the trend," said political risk expert Creomar de Souza.

CNN —Editor’s Note: This essay is adapted from Chris Wallace’s book, “Countdown 1960.”The 1960 presidential election changed everything. Countdown 1960 is the riveting new history by Chris Wallace, bestselling author of Countdown 1945 and Countdown bin Laden, offering a fresh take on 1960 and the dramatic 11 months leading up to a deeply relevant election for the ages. To put it simply: There is good reason to believe the presidential election of 1960 was stolen. And yet, in 1960, the candidate who “lost” refused to contest the results and interfere with the peaceful transfer of power. Kennedy won Illinois and its 27 electoral votes by just 8,858 votes out of more than 4.7 million cast.

In San Jose, a center of California’s housing crisis, one of the oldest and last remaining Japanese-owned farms in the state will be demolished to pave the way for urban housing. San Jose is home to one of only three existing Japantowns in the country and the only one built on agricultural roots. In July, the San Jose City Council voted to turn the Sakauye family’s 23-acre fruit orchard into a mixed-used development constituting nearly 1,500 apartment units and town houses. Vanessa Hatakeyama, the acting director of the Japanese American Museum of San Jose, said the Sakauye farm is a remnant of San Jose’s agricultural landscape — one that was built by Japanese immigrants — before it was transformed by the tech and suburban housing booms. The success of so many 2020 election deniers in Republican primaries this year demonstrates that Trump’s ongoing campaign of election lies continues to have a strong hold on his party. Even four years later, candidates’ views on the 2020 election are relevant in important practical ways. Lake also baselessly advocated the imprisonment of Katie Hobbs, who was Arizona’s election chief during the 2020 election and went on to defeat Lake in the 2022 race for governor. The virtual event, organized by Emgage Action, which endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris last week, was the most direct pitch yet to conflicted Muslim and Arab voters from her or Walz. “As-Salaam-Alaikum,” Walz said on the call, using the Arabic greeting, before he turned to the war on many Arab and Muslim voters’ minds. Some Muslim activists and elected officials they say are disappointed to have heard little from the Harris campaign since then. During the campaign, some disaffected Muslim and Arab voters have flocked to third-party candidates like Jill Stein and Cornel West, both of whom picked Muslim running mates and have courted pro-Palestinian voters. “We understand that some Muslim voters, any voter, may feel a moral dilemma voting for [Harris].

In New York City, a group of veteran journalists are trying to fill the gap. The group is tentatively called the New York Editorial Board, according to Semafor editor-in-chief Ben Smith, who helped assemble it in recent weeks. The self-styled board – “a group of journalists grilling politicians,” Smith said – is partly a reaction to The New York Times’ announcement in August that its editorial board will no longer endorse candidates in New York’s local elections. The timing is especially notable in the wake of last week’s indictment of New York City Mayor Eric Adams, raising the possibility of a nonpartisan special election if he resigns. Politicians, they hope, will feel obliged to participate given the prominence of the local journalists going back generations.

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan — A weakened and “weird” Typhoon Krathon slammed into southwestern Taiwan on Thursday, hitting the island with a storm that has killed two people so far and forced it to shut down for a second day with hundreds of flights grounded and financial markets closed. Krathon made landfall as a much weaker category 1 typhoon around midday at the major port city of Kaohsiung. All domestic flights were canceled for a second day, as well as 236 international ones. Typhoons often hit Taiwan’s east coast facing the Pacific, but Krathon is unusual in that it directly hit the west coast. Local media labeled it a “weird” storm for that reason, and because of how it hovered off the coast before reaching land.

The Biden administration’s response to the hurricane has received bipartisan praise from political leaders in affected states. But Trump’s assertion that reviews for the Biden administration’s handling of the crisis have been entirely negative is not true. There is no evidence to suggest the fire was intentionally set, Maui Fire and Public Safety Chief Bradford Ventura said. The Lahaina fire was one of three wildfires that ignited on Maui that day; the report did not address the two other, less-destructive fires. Since last year, thousands of residents have sued Hawaiian Electric, Maui County and the state of Hawaii over the fire. The utility has acknowledged that one of its downed power lines ignited a blaze early that morning off Lahainaluna Road in the hills above Lahaina. KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan — Taiwan shut down on Wednesday, grounding hundreds of flights and closing schools, offices and financial markets ahead of the arrival of a weakening Typhoon Krathon, with one person reported dead and torrential rain lashing the island’s south. Although the typhoon has weakened, the threats from a storm surge, strong winds and rain remain as it slowly makes its way toward Taiwan’s coast, weather forecasters said. The typhoon would lose power once it hit land, said Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai, but would still bring intense winds and rain. Once it hits land, the typhoon could be downgraded into a tropical depression and dissipate, which has happened only once before in Taiwan, in 2001, forecasters said. In Taipei, some malls and shops remained open, with rain only expected later in the day.

Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance said "Kamala Harris' open border" has "destroyed” the lives of American citizens in Springfield, Ohio, before having his mic cut by debate moderators. Vance, who initially raised the claim days before Trump amplified it, did not repeat it during the vice presidential debate. But most of the Haitian migrants there are there legally, and local officials have strongly disputed Trump and Vance's portrayal of the city. At Tuesday's debate, things grew heated around Springfield after CBS News moderators Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan interjected to note the Haitian immigrants in Springfield have legal status before trying to move on. The moderators had warned at the beginning of the debate that they reserved the right to cut the mics at anytime to uphold the debate rules.

CNN —Asheville was touted as a climate haven, a place to escape the worst ravages of extreme weather. It pummeled western North Carolina as a tropical storm Friday.
