Anointing is a key part of the ceremony: holy oil is administered to symbolize God’s descent on the monarch. Here is George V in 1911. Memorabilia to commemorate King Charles III’s coronation, which is due to take place in London on Saturday. Photo: Thomas Krych/Zuma PressLONDON—Watching on as King Charles III is crowned in Westminster Abbey on Saturday will be an unusually eclectic group of people, a guest list that reflects the monarch’s drive to keep the institution relevant through diversity and a greater connection with ordinary Britons, even if that means quite a few aristocrats have been snubbed. Among those expected to attend in person as the new king is anointed with holy oil will be pop star Lionel Richie, U.S. first lady Jill Biden, the king of Tonga, the magician Dynamo, French President Emmanuel Macron and Max Woosey, a teenage boy who camped in his garden for three years to raise money for charity.

A screen inside the BBC’s headquarters broadcasts a statement by Richard Sharp. Photo: HENRY NICHOLLS/REUTERSLONDON—The chairman of the BBC, Richard Sharp , quit Friday after an investigation concluded he breached the U.K. government code for public appointments by failing to declare that he offered to facilitate a loan to former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson while applying for the job at the publicly funded broadcaster. The decision by Mr. Sharp, a former Goldman Sachs Group Inc. banker, to step down is the latest scandal to wash over the British Broadcasting Corp., which has been buffeted by a series of missteps that critics say has dented its image as an independent, impartial broadcaster and raised questions over whether it has bowed to pressure from the ruling Conservative government.
Giant screen options include pioneer IMAX and various premium large formats (PLF) created by theater chains. For Missouri-based B&B Theatres, about half of a multiplex's grosses now come from premium formats, compared with 30% before the pandemic, said Chief Content, Programming and Development Officer Brock Bagby. B&B operates 531 screens in 14 states and offers large format screens with heated recliners, 270-degree Screen X screens, immersive audio and MX4D seats timed to rumble with the action. "Post-COVID, our premium screens are selling better than ever," Bagby said. As a sign of its importance, Universal's Orr and other studio distribution executives said they consult Gelfond about IMAX screen availability before setting movie release dates.
Discovery in a lawsuit over the streaming rights for the comedic cartoon, and is seeking more than $50 million in unpaid fees. Warner alleged Paramount withheld specials and other related "South Park" content as its own fledgling streaming service, Paramount+, was lifting off. Discovery's argument that Paramount Global was required to deliver additional South Park content is baseless and wholly unsupported by the parties' agreement. Warner said in the earlier filing that during the bidding process for the streaming rights Paramount had allegedly asked if they could share the rights for Paramount+. The company added that Warner's HBO Max – which is being relaunched as Max – continues to feature the entire "South Park" library.

BELFAST—In mid-February, Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell finished coaching his son’s soccer team and was putting soccer balls into the trunk of his car in Omagh, Northern Ireland, when two masked gunmen shot him multiple times in front of his son. British authorities suspect that pro-Irish republicans targeted Mr. Caldwell, who remains hospitalized. On Tuesday, U.S. President Biden will travel to the British province to celebrate the deal’s anniversary along with U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar . Mr. Biden, whose ancestors were Irish, will hail the deal that brought an uneasy peace between a mostly Protestant community that sees itself as British and wants to remain part of the U.K., and a mostly Catholic community that endured decades of discrimination and which views itself as Irish and aspires to see a united Ireland. Within hours of Mr. Caldwell’s shooting, the leaders of the province’s five main political parties—which include pro-British unionist parties and pro-Irish nationalist ones—condemned the attack.
After Britain deployed troops, the Irish Republican Army stepped up its campaign against the British state, and its use of car bombs would strike terror across Northern Ireland and Britain. The aftermath of an IRA bombing in London in March 1973. Central Press/AFP/Getty Images

Being able to set the nation’s own trade policy was a key economic draw for many who supported the U.K. leaving the European Union. The U.K. government said it had struck a deal to join the Pacific trade alliance the U.S. exited under former President Donald Trump, as Britain looks to diversify trade away from Europe after Brexit. The U.K. will become the first European country to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, known as the TPP. The club of 11 countries largely spans the Indo-Pacific region and includes nations such as Japan, Canada, Chile and Vietnam.
LONDON—In a small windowless room in the basement of the British Museum sit some of the holiest relics of the Ethiopian Orthodox church: 11 small wooden plaques called Tabots that are considered by Ethiopian Christians to contain God’s presence. Each is meant to represent the biblical Ark of the Covenant. So holy are the pieces that they cannot be publicly displayed—Ethiopian Orthodox believers say only priests should look at them—and not even the director of the British Museum can view them. Covered in pieces of cloth, the 14-inch tablets with carved inscriptions have hardly been seen since they were looted from an Ethiopian fort in 1868 by invading British forces.

King Charles III is still set to visit Germany as planned. PARIS—The French government postponed a visit by Britain’s King Charles III amid widespread strikes that threatened to disrupt a protocol-heavy event aimed at solidifying Anglo-French ties that had been strained by Brexit. President Emmanuel Macron ’s office said the government decided to reschedule the king’s first overseas official visit after unions called for a day of new nationwide protests on Tuesday against the government’s pension overhaul.

By highlighting an element in a multilayer work of art — a lighthouse, in the demo video — Adobe Firefly uses AI to generate different versions of the lighthouse. Adobe on Tuesday launched an artificial intelligence tool called Firefly that will let users type commands to quickly modify images. Adobe's new product comes at a key inflection point both for Adobe and AI more broadly. OpenAI and Stable Diffusion, another AI organization, both offer generative AI image products. Adobe said Firefly will place an emphasis on giving creators "opportunities to benefit from your skills and creativity and protect your work."
LONDON—Efforts by the British government to end political paralysis in Northern Ireland suffered a blow on Monday after the Democratic Unionist Party said it would reject a compromise agreement recently hammered out by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the European Union over the region’s trading status. The so-called Windsor Framework is aimed at appeasing the DUP and other unionist communities in Northern Ireland who felt cut off from the rest of Britain after the country agreed as part of its 2019 Brexit divorce deal to place a border between Northern Ireland and the rest of the U.K., rather than a border between the province and Ireland, which remains an EU member.

Rishi Sunak , Britain’s prime minister, is trying to do what none of his recent predecessors have pulled off: Move the U.K. beyond Brexit, shore up the country’s rickety public services and sell the country as a profitable destination for business. He also has only about a year and a half to persuade British voters that, after 13 years in power, the Conservative Party of Brexit and Prime Ministers Boris Johnson and Liz Truss deserves a record fifth consecutive term in office.

BBC commentator Gary Lineker was suspended over tweeting about politics. LONDON—The British Broadcasting Corp. now finds itself caught in a drama of its own making: By suspending a top sports broadcaster over tweeting about politics, it has inadvertently forced itself into the center of a U.S. style culture war. On Sunday, the state-funded broadcaster for the second day had to limit the availability of its sports programming after dozens of staff and leading sports announcers walked off in protest at the suspension of retired footballer Gary Lineker, one of England’s most popular sports figures and the BBC’s highest-paid broadcaster.
China poses an “epoch-defining systemic challenge” to the U.K. and its allies, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Sunday, as the U.K. government said it would spend an extra $6 billion on its nuclear-armed submarine fleet and replenishing munitions stockpiles to bolster support for Ukraine and deter an increasingly assertive China. “It’s a country with fundamentally different values to ours, and I think over the last few years it’s become increasingly authoritarian at home and assertive abroad,” Mr. Sunak said of China, during an interview. “Its behavior suggests it has the intention—but also its actions show it is interested in reshaping the world order and that’s the crux of it.”
U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was traveling to San Diego on Sunday for talks with the U.S. and Australia about sharing defense technology. The U.K. government said Sunday that it would spend an extra $6 billion investing in its nuclear-defense capabilities and replenishing munitions stockpiles, as part of a refreshed national-security review that aims to bolster support to Ukraine and deter an increasingly assertive China. In a written statement, the British government said it would spend the extra funds over the next two years to reinforce its stretched military. The bulk of those funds would go into the country’s nuclear program, including enhanced support for its submarine fleet. The government is also buying fresh ammunition supplies to replace the equipment that it has given to Ukraine during its war with Russia.
BBC sports commentator Gary Lineker was suspended after publishing tweets criticizing the U.K. government’s new policies on migrants. LONDON—The British Broadcasting Corp. has sparked one of its biggest crises in years by suspending its top sports commentator for criticizing the U.K. government on Twitter, leading to a staff rebellion and allegations that the state-funded broadcaster had compromised its independence by folding to government pressure. The venerable broadcaster yanked Gary Lineker, one of England’s most famous former football players and its highest paid presenter, from the country’s most watched football roundup show after he published tweets criticizing the government’s new policies on migrants, comparing them to Nazi Germany. The BBC said it considered Mr. Lineker’s “recent social media activity to be a breach of our guidelines” and said he “should keep well away from taking sides on party political issues or political controversies.”
