A new federal rule will prohibit schools from charging transaction fees to low-income students when their families electronically deposit funds into their lunch accounts. The report estimated that school meal payment processors collect more than $100 million in transaction fees a year. “The policy announced today will ensure fairness for all students receiving meals at a reduced price, even when paying online,” USDA said in a statement Friday. A Massachusetts woman passed herself as a nurse and dispensed thousands of doses of phony Botox and other fillers that had been smuggled into the United States, authorities said. Since March 2021, Fadanelli "completed approximately 1,631 Botox appointments, totaling $522,869 in client payments, and 1,085 filler appointments, totaling $410,545 in client payments," federal prosecutors said. Fadanelli's attorney could not be immediately reached for comment on Monday. In an interview with agents Fadanelli said she never claimed to be a nurse and didn't make the injections, prosecutors said. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a warning in June, alerting consumers to "harmful reactions among people who received injections of counterfeit or mishandled" Botox.

CNN —An American social media influencer said he was paid $100 by a pro-Kremlin propagandist to post a fake video of Haitian immigrants claiming to vote in the US presidential election. After speaking with CNN, AlphaFox deleted the post, which at the time had generated more than 2.6 million views. Deleted video’s message lives onAlphaFox said he was remorseful for sharing Russian disinformation, and adamant that he was the one who was tricked. “I never wanted to misinform anyone.”AlphaFox believes himself to be just “the guy who shared” a disinformation video. “Real people have become important vehicles of Russian disinformation.

The average age of homebuyers in the U.S. has risen by six years since July 2023 — another sign that younger Americans are being priced out of the market due to escalating ownership costs. The average age of homebuyers is now 56, up from 49 in 2023, according to the National Association of Realtors' annual state-of-the-market report released Monday. That's a historic high, up from an average age in the low-to-mid 40s in the early 2010s. The median age of first-time buyers also rose from 35 to 38, while the share of first-timers dropped from 32% to 24% of all buyers for the year ending July 2024. The median U.S. home price is now $435,000, per NAR — up 39% since 2020 — while the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate has more than doubled to over 6% in that time.

Realtor.com published its list of the states with the highest cost of living based on data from Stacker and Hawaii took the No. We know that places like California, Washington D.C., and Massachusetts are very expensive because the major expensive cities they all have," Hannah Jones, senior economic research analyst at Realtor.com, tells CNBC Make It. The cost of living was calculated using the average price of goods and services in that state's metro areas and cities. CNN —One of the driest months in United States history is coming to a close after causing the worst drought in more than 20 years in parts of the East as temperatures soar well above average there. As of October 25, the average precipitation across the Lower 48 was less than an inch. Only five months in the 129 years of records have ended with less than an inch of average precipitation over the Lower 48. Flash drought happens when drought conditions increase quickly, rather than over a multi-month or yearly timeframe, according to NOAA. It’s the state’s worst drought level since 2002.

But new research suggests that one English woman convicted of witchcraft and condemned to be hanged may have escaped the noose. Alice Molland – who has long held the tragic record of being the last woman in England to be hanged as a “witch” – was sentenced to death in 1685. In June 1685, Avis Molland – by now widowed – emerges in court records as an informant about a potential revolt, at a time when the Duke of Monmouth was attempting a rebellion against the king. Avis Molland died a free woman eight years later. Worland has spent 18 years unearthing victims’ details, and has successfully campaigned to have memorials to executed “witches” in Colchester and Chelmsford.
