CNN —Medicine for Israeli hostages and Palestinians has entered Gaza, Qatar said Wednesday, after the Gulf nation brokered a deal between Israel and Hamas to provide vital medication to the war-torn enclave. The agreement mediated by Qatar Tuesday will see medication delivered to Israeli hostages held by Hamas in Gaza in exchange for medicine and humanitarian aid to Palestinian civilians. Osama Hamdan, a Lebanon-based Hamas official, said the agreement was dependent on there being enough medication for Palestinians in Gaza in addition to the Israeli hostages. Hamas has stipulated that for every box of medication given to the hostages, Palestinians in Gaza must receive 1,000 boxes. However, the Israeli military said it does “not have the ability to guarantee” that medicine will reach the hostages.

Tokyo CNN —A Korean Air plane clipped wings with a Cathay Pacific jet at an airport in Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido on Tuesday amid heavy snow – an incident that comes just weeks after a fatal aircraft collision in Tokyo. No injuries were reported in the collision at Hokkaido’s New Chitose Airport (CTS), which occurred around 5:30 p.m., according to the airport operator. The U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation reported bank profits at $68.4 billion in the most recent quarter, down 3.4% from the prior quarter. CNN —Fragments of musical scores discovered at Auschwitz will be played for the first time next week after being painstakingly restored by a composer. He’s carried out extensive research into testimonies from Auschwitz and the history of music at the camps. Her grandson Simon Wallfisch, a baritone, will be performing the restored music from Auschwitz with Geyer and his orchestra. Four of the restored pieces will be performed by Constella Music, Geyer’s creative powerhouse whose work spans opera, dance, film and concert music, at Sadler’s Wells. “Orchestras of Auschwitz” will be performed as part of a concert to celebrate Constella Music’s tenth anniversary.

The special committee, created by a unanimous vote of the board, will be led by Republican Jonathan McKernan, who was confirmed to the board by the Senate late last year, and Democrat Michael Hsu, who has served as acting comptroller of the currency and an FDIC board member since 2021.

The special committee will be co-chaired by two FDIC board members, acting Comptroller of the Currency Michael Hsu, a Democrat, and board member Jonathan McKernan, a Republican. Last week, McKernan and FDIC Vice Chair Travis Hill, also a Republican, had demanded that Gruenberg recuse himself from oversight of any review. The board resolution approving the review includes provisions "that restrict the ability of FDIC management and FDIC Board members not on the Special Committee to engage with or influence the review," Hill said, noting that his support of the decision had depended on that condition. In a statement, Sherrod Brown, a Democrat and chair of the Senate Banking Committee who last week called on FDIC inspector general's office to investigate, said the FDIC board had taken "appropriate steps" to ensure its own review would proceed independently.

A special committee will oversee a review of alleged toxic workplace culture and sexual harassment, the U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation announced Tuesday, as the top banking regulator faced a reckoning following reports in the Wall Street Journal this month. "The Board supports taking all actions necessary to identify and address the root cause of the problem and to promote accountability," the FDIC's board of directors said in a statement. Citing interviews with more than 20 women who had quit, the Wall Street Journal reported last week the agency had failed to eradicate widespread harassment and misogynist behavior among staff and that FDIC Chair Martin Gruenberg himself had earned a reputation for bullying and leniency in cases of misconduct. The allegations have rocked the agency as Republican lawmakers called for Gruenberg to resign. Gruenberg has expressed dismay and vowed to address the problems as a top priority.

Lisa McClain of Michigan and Andy Biggs of Arizona wrote that the agency “may have turned a blind eye to sexual harassment and discrimination within its staff.”
