Read previewRussia's invasion of Ukraine has resulted in a surge in demand, orders, and manufacturing of Western weaponry, including decades-old equipment and even gear that had gone out of production. The result is more orders and manufacturing, even of Western equipment where production had stopped. Its maker, Lockheed Martin, is increasing production as well as its production of the antitank missile system. Russia has also ramped up its wartime production, which could aid it in the future and not just against Ukraine. One solution would have been countries ramping up their orders and production earlier in the war, Di Mizio said.

The Real Problem With Legal Weed
  + stars: | 2024-07-03 | by ( Charles Fain Lehman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
Kathy Hochul has called New York’s legalization rollout “a disaster.” Mayor Eric Adams has spent months demanding that Albany fix the current system. There are around 140 recreational dispensaries operating statewide — about one for every 148,000 New Yorkers. Instead of shopping legally, New Yorkers tend to get their weed from the illegal shops that now blanket the state. Estimates suggest that there are anywhere from 2,000 to 8,000 in New York City alone, with uncounted more from Ithaca to Oneonta. Recent crackdowns have temporarily sealed more than 400 stores — only a small fraction of the total in the city.

The Big Number: $5 Billion

Volkswagen, the German car company, said this week that it would invest up to $5 billion in Rivian, the American electric vehicle manufacturer that makes electric pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles and delivery vans. The deal will help Rivian, which has never turned a quarterly profit, make more electric vehicles and help convince investors of its stability. Rivian, which was founded in 2009 as Mainstream Motors, had billions in investments by 2021, including from Amazon, BlackRock and Ford. But as the case with many new electric vehicle companies, Rivian has also experienced hiccups in trying to ramp up to production, made harder by supply chain issues during the pandemic. In March, Rivian said it would pause construction of a $5 billion factory in Georgia to save money.

New York CNN —New York City officials have agreed to restore more than $111 million in funding to libraries and cultural institutions, the City Council announced Thursday. “We are proud to announce a full restoration of funds to both our libraries and cultural institutions in the upcoming budget,” said New York City Mayor Eric Adams in a statement Thursday. More than 174,000 people sent letters to City Hall in support of the “No Cuts to Libraries!” campaign since the cuts were announced in November. “This funding will allow us to resume seven-day service, a priority for many New Yorkers,” the libraries said in a statement shared with CNN. “We are running a library system today on a pre-pandemic funding level that has not kept pace with inflation,” Linda Johnson, president and CEO of Brooklyn Public Library said at the time.

Morgan Stanley analysts say they are expecting the computer memory sector to hit new highs over the rest of 2024, despite investors "generally" not being comfortable buying such stocks at such lofty prices. CNN —The trial of Evan Gershkovich, the first American journalist to be arrested on espionage charges in Russia since the Cold War, began Wednesday morning in a closed door hearing that has been condemned by his newspaper and the United States. While many newsrooms subsequently pulled their reporters out of Russia, Gershkovich remained, covering the war and how it was changing life in Russia. Footage on Wednesday morning showed Gershkovich inside a glass court cage, his head shaved, ahead of the trial due to start imminently behind closed doors. The trial of Gershkovich, the American-born son of Soviet-era emigres to the US, has highlighted the extent to which Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has harmed relations between Moscow and Washington. The fruity energy drink debuts less than two months after bakery-cafe chain Panera Bread announced it was discontinuing its controversial Charged Lemonade, a beverage that lawsuits blamed for two deaths and referred to as a "dangerous energy drink." The Iced Energy comes in three flavors, including its most caffeinated flavor, Tropical Citrus, which has 205 milligrams of caffeine, according to Starbucks' website. Panera started phasing out the Charged Lemonade on May 7, and it has denied any wrongdoing, saying it removed the beverage as part of a broader menu transformation. Except for its Frozen Tropical Citrus Iced Energy with Strawberry Puree, Iced Energy is sugar-free, containing artificial sweeteners. Charged Lemonade and Iced Energy are part of a growing category called "functional beverages" that chains big and small are eager to jump into, according to experts.

As spring turned to summer this week, extreme heat caught much of New York City by surprise, sending concerned residents to prepare for rising temperatures earlier than usual, while various city agencies, civic organizations and businesses have also been adjusting their seasonal calendars. As climate change extends the traditional summer and batters the city with spontaneous rain storms, many New Yorkers are discovering that they are not quite in sync with the weather anymore and have to rethink how to adapt to the passing months. Look no further than this week: The city has already activated its first heat emergency plan of the year, but school remains in session, pools have yet to open and public beaches are still staffing up with lifeguards. For the most part, New Yorkers made modest adjustments to their schedules, postponing outings or being cautious if they pressed ahead, exercising and running errands, for example, during the morning and the evening — the coolest parts of the day.
