CNN —The morning after Donald Trump was reelected president, Justices Samuel Alito and Elena Kagan began jousting more than usual. More than other justices on their respective sides, conservative Alito and liberal Kagan are sharp-tongued strategic questioners. As usual, Alito and Kagan began referring to each other’s questions but with barely a glance toward the other at their elbow. Skeptical of the litigants’ case, Alito asked their lawyer Deepak Gupta why Huang would have put out financial information that could be quickly exposed as wrong. Then Alito said, “Well, I don’t want to derail … Justice Kagan had a number of hypotheticals, but I don’t want to interrupt that.”Kagan seemed miffed, but only slightly.

It’s a “capital junkie” that’s been on a yearslong binge of unprecedented spending on all-electric and autonomous vehicles. Capital junkieThe latest cost-cutting cycle comes nearly a decade after an infamous Wall Street presentation by late-Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne called “Confessions of a Capital Junkie.” The April 2015 report highlighted the industry’s massive capital spending on overlapping or niche products that Marchionne was convinced could be solved through consolidation and shared capital spending. That’s shareholder money.”Most capital spending by automakers isn’t wasted, but the industry isn’t as efficient as other sectors, with minimal return on invested capital. While losing ground in China, GM has been among the most aggressive in spending on EVs and self-driving vehicles. GM and Hyundai this summer entered into an agreement to explore “future collaboration across key strategic areas” in an effort to reduce capital spending and increase efficiencies.

On the first trading day since Donald Trump chose the billionaire financier Scott Bessent as his pick for Treasury secretary, investors seem to be signaling they like the choice. Bessent does,” Paul Donovan, chief economist of UBS Global Wealth Management, wrote in a research note on Monday. The Key Square Group founder overcame serious opposition from some in Trump’s inner circle. On Wall Street, a document was circulated suggesting that his Key Square hedge fund had underperformed the booming markets. Bessent’s ascent is notable in that he doesn’t appear to have been on Trump’s radar during his first administration.

A man walks past the People's Bank of China (PBOC) building on July 20, 2023 in Beijing, China. The People's Bank of China kept the medium-term lending facility rate unchanged at 2.0% on 900 billion yuan ($124.26 billion) worth of one-year loans to some financial institutions, according to the bank's official statement. Keeping the MLF rate intact allows for "greater policy maneuverability" given the change in U.S. administration, at a time when commercial banks' net-interest-margins have remained tight, Pang added. "A delayed reduction in the [MLF] lending rates" would also bolster the yuan against the stronger greenback, JLL's Pang added. Unlike the Fed's focus on a main interest rate, the PBOC uses a variety of rates to manage monetary policy.
