The number of manufacturing jobs has fallen 45 percent since the late 1990s, as factories have shuttered or moved to Mexico, China and elsewhere. Canton represents the kind of struggling manufacturing town that once churned out American products. They argue that the candidates’ proposals aren’t enough to reverse the trends — globalization, free trade agreements, automation and other technological changes — that caused manufacturing jobs to leave America in the first place. That helps explain why, despite Mr. Biden’s subsidies, the number of manufacturing jobs nationwide remains 34 percent lower than it was in the late 1970s. Modern manufacturing jobs also often require a postsecondary education.

During an appearance this weekend on Andy Cohen’s messy and drama-prone Bravo talk show, “Watch What Happens Live,” Martha Stewart stoked the fires of a feud between herself and her fellow culinary mogul, Ina Garten. The pair has long presented a familiar dichotomy to the world of homemaking television, with Ms. Stewart, 83, as the blonde perfectionist and Ms. Garten, 76, as the friendly brunette. They became close friends in the 1990s, but have since had a falling out — and they have decidedly different views of what transpired. Here is what you need to know about the feud and whose side Snoop Dogg is taking. During a segment on Mr. Cohen’s show, he asked Ms. Stewart, who was on set with her frequent companion Snoop Dogg, if she had read Ms. Garten’s memoir, “Be Ready When the Luck Happens.” The memoir, which was published on Oct. 1, details Ms. Garten’s difficult childhood and her road to culinary fame.

The lawsuit alleges that Strum was demanding $50 million from Lasry or she threatened to make things "really, really, ugly." In the suit, Lasry, the former owner of the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks and a longtime Democratic megadonor, alleges that his former employee, Gina Strum, was trying to extort him for $50 million. The suit states that Lasry rebuffed Strum's advances, but that did not stop the flow of texts. "Ms. Strum wrongly asserted that Ms. Gardner's 2022 surgery should have been disclosed to Avenue's investors, because according to Ms. Strum, Ms. Gardner was in poor health and had not been working for the last two years," the suit reads. "When Ms. Strum received the attention and the money she sought, she routinely complimented Plaintiffs," the suit states.

They worry that the expanded tax credit would reduce incentives to find a job, hurting the economy. The child tax credit “is a costly transfer program for taxpayers with kids who do not need government handouts,” the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank, has said. In 2022, after one year, Congress allowed the expanded child tax credit to expire. While it was in effect, the expanded child tax credit reduced child poverty in the U.S. by nearly half, studies have found. JD Vance, Donald Trump’s running mate, has said he favors expanding the child tax credit as well, though he is vague on details.

Opinion Guest Essay The 21 Slivers of America That Could Decide the Election Sebastian Siadecki for The New York TimesIn almost every presidential battleground state, polling suggests something close to a dead heat between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. For Ms. Harris and Mr. Trump, each could be a crucial building block in a winning swing-state coalition. In 2016, with Mr. Trump in the race, these areas began to march to national trends: Rural areas trended Republican, while Milwaukee’s well-off, close-in suburbs zoomed left. Still, loyalties remain potent in Wisconsin, from Democratic-leaning, ancestrally Scandinavian voters in the state’s rural west to middle-class suburban Republicans outside Milwaukee. Mr. Trump lost Nash County by just 0.2 points in 2020 and Wilson County by three points.

But those kinds of companies are rarely reflected on “Shark Tank” for one simple reason: They don’t make for good TV. “The buyer gave us a shot at Target because of the ‘Shark Tank’ appearance.”“We turn you into a rock star and you become part of the ‘Shark Tank’ culture and the lore of ‘Shark Tank’,” said Mr. O’Leary.

At the same time, half of them said it was important that America have a female president in the next decade, and a few praised Kamala Harris. The women who liked Mr. Trump said they trusted him more on the economy and inflation and were skeptical that costs would go down under Ms. Harris because they blamed the Biden-Harris administration for the state of the economy now. Vice President Kamala Harris may not get another debate with former President Donald J. Trump, but on Wednesday, she got one with Bret Baier. In an interview that turned contentious almost the instant it began, Mr. Baier, Fox News’s chief political anchor, repeatedly pressed the Democratic presidential nominee on illegal immigration, taxpayer support for gender-transition surgery and other areas that closely aligned with Mr. Trump’s regular attacks against her. At one point, Mr. Baier wondered if the vice president considered Mr. Trump’s supporters “stupid.” (“I would never say that about the American people,” she replied.) Mr. Baier’s aggressive demeanor was consistent with the kind of tough coverage of Ms. Harris that blankets Fox News’s daily programming. Lots of viewers were surely eager to hear how she would respond when confronted head-on.

They disagree, however, about whether Ms. Harris’s plan would actually do that. (Economists also agree that former President Donald J. Trump’s housing plan, which aims to free up housing by deporting immigrants, would probably make the housing crisis worse by devastating the construction work force). Ms. Harris’s main challenge will be convincing them to build.
