The German discount retailer said on Wednesday that it was buying all of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket's locations from parent company Southeastern Grocers for an undisclosed price. Some of the stores will be converted to Aldis, while others will continue to operate as Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores, Aldi CEO Jason Hart said in a statement. Supermarket chain Aldi plans to acquire hundreds of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket locations across the Southern U.S. in a deal that will expand the fast-growing grocer's presence across the region. Germany-based Aldi said in a news release Wednesday that it will take over operations of all Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket locations — about 400 stores — in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi. Some locations will be converted to Aldi stores after the acquisition, while others will continue operating as Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket grocery stores, according to the release. Nationwide, the company plans to add 120 new stores to reach a total of more than 2,400 stores by year-end. The sale of the Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket locations is a part of a larger divestiture by Southeastern Grocers, the chains' parent company.

New York CNN —Grocery shoppers in the Southeast can expect to see more Aldi stores starting 2024. Some of the nearly 400 Winn-Dixie locations Aldi is acquiring will keep the familiar red-and-white Winn-Dixie branding and traditional store layout, but many will convert to Aldi’s brand and bare-bones store format. The acquisition – which includes Harveys Supermarket – will add locations across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi to Aldi’s portfolio. Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket had long been staples in the Southeast region. Aldi has not disclosed how many of the Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores it plans on converting, or how much the deal cost.

SINGAPORE, Aug 15 (Reuters) - Singapore's central bank released a regulatory framework on Tuesday intended to bolster the stability of single-currency stablecoins. The framework will apply to non-bank issuers of single-currency stablecoins pegged to the Singapore Dollar or any G10 currencies where their circulation exceeds S$5 million, said the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). The central bank has to hold legislative consultations before Parliament passes amendments that would bring the framework into force. Single-currency stablecoins are a type of cryptocurrency pegged to a traditional asset like national currencies. The reserve assets must be at least at 100% of the outstanding single-currency stablecoins that are in circulation.

Singapore's financial regulator on Tuesday said it had finalized rules for a type of digital currency called stablecoin, putting it among the first jurisdictions globally to do so. Stablecoins are a type of digital currency designed to hold a constant value against a fiat currency. The stablecoin market is valued at around $125 billion, with two tokens — Tether's USDT and Circle's USDC — dominating roughly 90% of the market cap value. The Monetary Authority of Singapore's (MAS) framework spells out some key requirements:Reserves that back stabelcoins must be held in low-risk and highly-liquid assets. These rules will apply to stablecoins that are issued in Singapore and mimic the value of the Singapore dollar, or of any G10 currency, such as the U.S. dollar.

Singapore downgrades GDP outlook, avoids recession

Goss domestic product (GDP) expanded a seasonally-adjusted 0.1% quarter-on-quarter in April to June, slower than 0.3% growth seen in the government's advance estimate. Manufacturing will remain weak, dampened by a protracted downturn in electronics, while finance and insurance sectors will likely be subdued, MTI said. The ministry narrowed its GDP growth forecast to 0.5% to 1.5% this year from 0.5% to 2.5% previously. Analysts are expecting no change to monetary policy at MAS's October meeting, despite cooling momentum. MAS left its policy settings unchanged in April, after tightening five times in a row since October 2021, reflecting concerns over the city-state's growth outlook.

CNN —Fans turned out in their droves to watch Lionel Messi’s official unveiling as an Inter Miami player. When Pizarro signed for Inter, he filled one of the club’s three ‘Designated Player’ spots. The rule is also known as the ‘Beckham Rule’ after David Beckham – now Inter’s co-owner – became the first designated player when he joined LA Galaxy in 2007. So, with Messi signing a contract reportedly worth between $50 to $60 million per year, the 35-year-old Argentine fills one of Inter’s designated player spots. Either Inter can look to move one of their designated players on or they can “buy down” a player’s contract.

Singapore's economy avoided a technical recession in the second quarter, growing 0.7% year-on-year and 0.3% quarter-on-quarter, advanced estimates showed. Economists polled by Reuters expected to see growth of 0.3% quarter-on-quarter and 0.6% year-on-year. In the first quarter, Singapore's economy contracted by 0.4% quarter-on-quarter on a seasonally adjusted basis and saw marginal growth of 0.4% year-on-year. The latest data comes after the Monetary Authority of Singapore, the city-state's central bank and financial regulator, warned of an "uncertain" growth outlook earlier this month. In it annual review, MAS estimated the gross domestic product for 2023 to ease to a range of 0.5% to 2.5%, lower than the growth of 3.6% in 2022.

Singapore's central bank warned on Wednesday that the near-term growth outlook for one of Asia's top financial hubs "remains uncertain with downside risks" even as the effects of its monetary tightening cycle work towards cooling inflation. In an annual review by the Monetary Authority of Singapore, or MAS, chief Ravi Menon on Wednesday said Singapore's near-term growth would remain weak as prospects had dimmed but inflation should reduce by year-end, although he stressed the fight to contain it was not yet over. MAS now forecasts 2023 headline inflation at 4.5% to 5.5%, slower than the 5.5% to 6.5% seen earlier, Menon told a press conference. Core inflation would be significantly lower at 2.5% to 3.0%, he added. The central bank's monetary policy remains "steadfastly focused on medium term price stability", he said.
