The Trump campaign on Saturday said that a foreign hacker had breached its systems and gained access to internal communications. Politico began receiving leaked campaign documents from an anonymous source on July 22, according to the news outlet's report on Saturday. Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether the Trump campaign had been a target of the Iranian hacking plot. Politico reported that it began receiving Trump campaign documents from an anonymous email account identifying only as "Robert." Politico did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether it was working with the Trump campaign and law enforcement to investigate the hack.

Trump campaign says it has been hacked

CNN —Former President Donald Trump’s campaign said Saturday in a statement that it had been hacked. When asked whether the Trump campaign had been in contact with law enforcement, a campaign official said it would not discuss those kinds of conversations. Politico reported it had received emails that contained internal communications from a senior Trump campaign official and a research dossier the campaign had put together on Trump’s running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance. The dossier included what the Trump campaign identified as Vance’s potential vulnerabilities. In 2016, days before the Democratic National Convention, WikiLeaks published nearly 20,000 emails from the Democratic National Committee server.

One of the two female boxers at the center of an Olympic gender controversy pleaded with the public to “avoid bullying all athletes” Sunday night. The association alleged that the women failed to pass unspecified gender tests that found they had male chromosomes. The International Boxing Association, whose president is Umar Kremlev of Russia, reportedly an acquaintance of President Vladimir Putin, has had its legitimacy scrutinized in recent years. (In Olympic boxing, there are no third-place matches, so two bronze medals are awarded to the semifinal losers.) CNN —JD Vance is making a second pass at introducing himself to America as the Ohio senator attempts to put his uneven rollout as Donald Trump’s running mate in the rearview mirror. Vance is also expected to begin holding news conferences with reporters as early as this week, the source said. At a closed-door fundraiser in Oklahoma City last week, Trump’s finance team was hoping the former president’s new running mate would raise $1 million. The campaign was well aware of Vance’s past criticisms of Trump and the deeply anti-abortion views he vocally defended. Still, people close to both Trump and Vance argue that America has yet to learn how effective the Ohio senator can be when in the spotlight.

Wednesday’s interview-turned-confrontation with reporters at a convention of Black journalists in Chicago made perfectly clear that nothing has changed. Trump’s remarks, he told donors in Maine Wednesday, put on display “a worse version of an already horrible person.”But he also cautioned against focusing too narrowly on the former president’s words. His reaction – his attack on Harris – was largely unprompted and strayed from the reporters’ line of questioning. North Dakota Sen. Kevin Cramer took a different tack, dismissing Trump’s remarks as “satire,” but also suggesting it was “not wise” politically to raise the issue. He promised he’s gonna have a woman of color.”Biden pledged to choose a woman as his running mate in 2020, not a woman of color.

The Justice Department has denied a request by Zacarias Moussaoui, the only prisoner ever convicted in the United States of having ties to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, to serve the remainder of his life sentence in his native France. Mr. Moussaoui had made the application from the supermax prison in Colorado, using a process that is routinely available to foreign nationals held as U.S. prisoners. Then on Wednesday afternoon, two relatives of people killed in the attacks said they were notified by the Justice Department that the request was denied. “Our office appreciates your concerns and comments regarding Zacarias Moussaoui,” the email said. “I am notifying you that Mr. Moussaoui’s application to transfer to France was denied by the United States on July 26, 2024.”No explanation was offered for the delay in notification.

Graham was one of an "array of senators, donors, conservative media personalities and other supporters" who tried to get Trump to choose someone other than Vance, according to the Post. Graham has since publicly defended Vance, including during an appearance on CBS's "Face the Nation" on Sunday. Mr. Vance’s stumbles have come after a remarkable two weeks when Mr. Trump survived an assassination attempt and then rallied the party — and even some skeptics — behind him. Then, in a sense, Mr. Trump and Mr. Vance became the victims of that success. Some of Mr. Vance’s comments on some conservative podcasts veered into serious policy critiques that trucked in antisemitic tropes and racial stereotypes. The Harris campaign has been able to keep the spotlight on the momentum behind her fledgling presidential run — and away from Mr. Trump. It wasn’t that long ago that many Republicans fully supported the most compelling of Biden’s ideas: term limits for justices. Term limits were also supported by Senator Marco Rubio, and Senator Ted Cruz proposed putting justices up for election every eight years. But an 18-year maximum tenure for justices, as Biden and many others have proposed, shouldn’t be ping-ponged around by whatever faction is dissatisfied with the current court. Through the 1960s, the average term on the court was around 15 years; after 1970, it became about 26 years. The founders did not fully anticipate how a justice might become insulated from reality after serving on the court for many decades.

While she isn't yet his official opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris' mere presence could provoke such a reaction. Years later, Trump deeming former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton "a nasty woman" remains a badge of honor for Democrats. It’s a bad time to be a finance billionaire. Republicans on Wall Street, who had been largely coalescing around former President Donald J. Trump’s efforts to return to office, suffered outright repudiation this week with his pick of Senator JD Vance of Ohio as a running mate. Mr. Vance, a harsh critic of corporate interests and a former venture capitalist, solidified a feeling in the world of high finance that the balance of power in the party had suddenly shifted westward to Silicon Valley. In choosing Mr. Vance, Mr. Trump brushed off personal entreaties from some of the Republican Party’s biggest donors. While accepting his nomination on Wednesday at the Republican convention in Milwaukee, he said the party was done “catering to Wall Street.”

Vance was swift to name China the “biggest threat to our country,” in an interview with Fox News Monday as the RNC got underway. He’s made countering what Washington says is a security threat from China a cornerstone of his foreign policy, even as he’s worked to stabilize communications with Beijing. And Beijing – which is grappling with its own economic woes – may be preparing for more friction if Trump takes office. The substance of Biden’s China policy – in terms of sanctions, tariffs and competition – has not been that different from Trump’s, she noted, and Biden has been keener on strengthening alliances and coalitions to counter China together. “But the style of Biden’s China policy is more predictable and stabilizing.

“It’s very clear that Trump wants someone who can carry the movement on,” a person close to Trump told CNN said of the Vance selection. The two became close friends, a relationship that helped Vance earn Trump’s endorsement in a contested primary for an open Ohio Senate seat. As a senator, Vance quickly won over the thought leaders of Trump’s populist movement. Vance and Trump Jr. embraced on the convention stage Tuesday afternoon as they prepared for their moments in the spotlight. That person, Tesla billionaire Elon Musk, was one of several people urging Trump in the final moments to select Ohio Sen. JD Vance. Only moments earlier, Trump had shared the information with Vance himself, according to multiple people familiar with the call. Trump spent the final 24 hours waffling over his pick, multiple sources told CNN, leaving even those in his inner circle guessing about his ultimate choice. Several Republican donors argued for Youngkin as Trump’s pick in recent days as it became clear that Rubio and Burgum may not make the cut. “I can’t stomach Trump,” Vance said in an interview with NPR at the time.

The uproar over the Trump assassination attempt may pause the intraparty rebellion against Biden for now, especially as he assumes his role as the leader of a nation in sudden crisis. In a nation that was already deeply divided, the core vote for both Trump and Biden was probably locked in. There can be no justification for an assassination attempt on a candidate — an assault on democracy. Many Republican politicians issued calls for calm and an easing of political rhetoric after the shooting — as did Democrats. And Johnson accompanied his calls for calm by implying that Democrats — in advancing their arguments against Trump — had somehow abetted the assassination attempt.

And yet one of the men, former President Donald Trump, 78, has been able to remake the Republican Party around his own divisive persona. Trump, between now and then, will pick a vice president from a short list of people who have previously criticized him but are now all in. Doug Burgum, who are also reportedly on Trump’s vice presidential short list, should be wary.
