Tesla CEO Elon Musk sent an email to "everybody" that day. He told employees, "Over the next few weeks, Tesla will be doing a comprehensive review to provide stock options grants for exceptional performance." In a filing for the fourth quarter, Tesla said its employee head count worldwide at the end of December was 140,473, a number that represents salaried and hourly staffers. At around 121,000, that suggests Tesla has reduced overall headcount by at least 14% since the end of 2023. For the first quarter, Tesla reported a 9% drop in annual revenue, the biggest decline since 2012.

By providing diagnostics and recalibration of the high-tech systems in modern vehicles, the company hopes to decrease costs associated with EV ownership and repairs. The existing collision repair industry is well-equipped to handle most physical fixes like replacing a bumper, a busted windshield, brakes and paint or adjusting alignment. But for many collision repair centers and auto dealerships, ensuring all sensors, software and computers are working properly can prove time-consuming and expensive. Kinetic puts its robotic systems and technicians to work helping these shops and dealerships fix the finicky, "digital" aspects of customers' cars. Then Kinetic's software, which is connected to the vehicle's systems, will initiate and track the completion of those fixes.

The Federal Trade Commission said Tuesday that it's referred its complaint against TikTok and Chinese parent ByteDance to the U.S. Department of Justice. The FTC began its investigation following a 2019 settlement with Musical.ly, the predecessor to TikTok, that was related to violations of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The FTC was probing to see if TikTok violated a federal law that prohibits "unfair and deceptive" business practices. TikTok didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

However, during last year's meeting, Musk promised shareholders he would spend less time on the app going forward, calling the business a "short-term distraction." Regarding the Cybertruck, which hit the market in late 2023, Musk said deliveries are picking up. Musk promised Tesla would move into "limited production" of Optimus in 2025 and test out humanoid robots in its own factories next year.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk claimed on Thursday that his company's Optimus humanoid robots could eventually make the automaker worth more than half of that. As for shareholder value, Musk said Optimus could be the catalyst for lifting Tesla's market cap to $25 trillion someday. The company, he predicted, will have "over 1,000, or a few thousand, Optimus robots working at Tesla" in 2025. Getting to a $25 trillion market cap would mean that Tesla would be worth about eight times Apple's value today. He did say that autonomous vehicles could get the company to a market cap of $5 trillion to $7 trillion.

Elon Musk on Tuesday withdrew his lawsuit against OpenAI and two of the company's co-founders, Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, in California state court. Musk's decision to file to dismiss the suit came just one day after he publicly criticized OpenAI and its new partnership with Apple. In February, Musk had filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, Altman and Brockman — the current CEO and president of OpenAI, respectively — for breach of contract and fiduciary duty. Last year, Musk debuted his own AI startup and OpenAI competitor, xAI, which last month announced a $6 billion Series B funding round.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, threatened to ban Apple devices from his companies on Monday after the iPhone maker announced a partnership with OpenAI. In a series of posts on his social media platform X, Musk shared concerns about whether Apple and OpenAI will protect users' information. He specifically said that Apple devices would be banned if the company "integrates OpenAI at the OS level," referring to Apple's operating system. Musk replied directly to a post from Apple CEO Tim Cook and claimed he will ban Apple devices from his companies' premises unless Cook decides to "stop this creepy spyware." He added that his companies' visitors will be asked to check their Apple devices at the door.

Correspondence from Nvidia staffers also indicates that Musk diverted a sizable shipment of AI processors that had been reserved for Tesla to his social media company X, formerly known as Twitter. "Elon prioritizing X H100 GPU cluster deployment at X versus Tesla by redirecting 12k of shipped H100 GPUs originally slated for Tesla to X instead," an Nvidia memo from December said. In a post on X in November, Musk wrote, "X Corp investors will own 25% of xAI." Tesla is being sued by the nonprofit Environmental Democracy Project, which alleges "ongoing failure to comply with the Clean Air Act" at the electric vehicle company's assembly plant in Fremont, California. The latest lawsuit in California described Tesla's environmental violations as "ongoing" and said that residents and employees in the surrounding area have been exposed to "excess amounts of air pollution, including nitrogen oxides, arsenic, cadmium, and other harmful chemicals." The Bay Area Air Quality Management District, an environmental regulator, recently accused Tesla of allowing "unabated emissions" in Fremont that should have been prevented. Air pollution from the assembly plant is the result of equipment that frequently breaks down, allowing emissions to vent directly into the air without proper filtration, regulators have said. Additionally, Tesla employees or contractors have allegedly shut off air pollution controls in the factory, particularly when the company was having trouble with other paint shop equipment.

The future of Tesla Supercharging is uncertain following CEO Elon Musk's disbanding of the Supercharging team as part of a broader restructuring. The roughly 500 layoffs included senior director of EV charging Rebecca Tinucci and Daniel Ho, director of vehicle programs. "I would describe the Supercharger network as one of the crown jewels of Tesla," said Andres Pinter, co-CEO of Bullet EV Charging Solutions. "Instead of doing victory laps and building the Supercharger network and reaping the benefits of this asset, suddenly there's this pause." Musk said in a post that Tesla still plans to grow the Supercharger network, just at a slower pace.

A federal judge in California dismissed a lawsuit filed by Elon Musk's X against Israel's Bright Data, in a case that involved the scraping of public online data and its appropriate uses. X, formerly Twitter, sued Bright Data, alleging the company "scrapes data from X" and sells it "using elaborate technical measures to evade X Corp.'s anti-scraping technology." He added that X was not "looking to protect X users' privacy," and was "happy to allow the extraction and copying of X users' content so long as it gets paid." Bright Data says it only scrapes publicly available data that's visible to anyone without a login. At the time of the suit's filing, X made the information Bright Data scraped available to anyone.

Childhood friends Jeremy Brewer and Sam Levac-Levey started their first clean energy startup in 2018. Six years later, they're launching a new venture fund to invest in climate tech companies overlooked by their peers. According to PwC's 2023 study on the state of climate tech, more than 70% of investment went into energy and mobility. Brewer said Starshot is looking to invest in companies that offer "gigaton-scale solutions, that can increase their customers' profitability and revenue." They entered a climate tech accelerator in Canada called Creative Destruction Lab, where they worked for months to perfect their plan.

Tesla is being accused of taking steps to keep employees in Buffalo, New York, from unionizing, according to a complaint from the National Labor Relations Board. The policy restricted Tesla workers from "recording, unauthorized solicitating [sic] or promoting," and "creating channels and distribution lists," among other things, the complaint said. The Tesla Buffalo plant was supposed to manufacture solar panels, but has been used more recently to assemble electric vehicle charging equipment, and to house a team of AI software data labelers. Last month, the Buffalo plant was home to a number of job cuts put in place as part of a broader restructuring at the electric vehicle company. Tesla has also faced workers' rights challenges in Europe.

Tesla Chairwoman Robyn Denholm has just sold $17.3 million worth of her shares in the electric vehicle maker, according to a filing Monday, bringing her total stock sales this year to more than $50 million. Former Tesla Senior Vice President Drew Baglino, who announced his resignation in mid-April, sold shares worth around $181.5 million soon after his departure, according to a filing. In Denholm's early years on the Tesla board, she served on the audit committee. Before joining the Tesla board, Denholm served in executive roles at Sun Microsystems, and in finance roles at Toyota in Australia and at accounting firm Arthur Andersen. Since the recall, at least 20 Tesla vehicles have been involved in crashes in which the system was thought to be in use, according to a filing on the NHTSA's website. The "recall remedy" probe follows a three-year investigation by the agency that found safety issues with Tesla Autopilot contributed to at least 467 collisions and 14 deaths from January 2018 through August 2023. The NHTSA is seeking detailed crash data from the electric vehicle maker since the agency issued the recall update on Autopilot, including data and video stored in or streamed from its cars and retained by the company. The company hasn't disclosed how many jobs in its Autopilot and vehicle-safety engineering teams may have been cut. For about a decade, CEO Elon Musk has been promising that Tesla is on the cusp of a self-driving breakthrough.

Tesla shares fell nearly 6% on Tuesday following news that CEO Elon Musk was pressing ahead with more job cuts at Tesla , impacting an estimated 500 employees in its Supercharger team. In the email, Musk also expressed consternation that Tesla management hadn't thinned out the company's staff more promptly at his direction. Other laid-off Tesla employees posted publicly about Tesla shrinking the Supercharger team. In cutting that group, Tesla revealed it's throttling the expansion of its Supercharger network in the U.S. The move comes after Tesla struck partnerships with Ford , GM and other industry players ensuring they would manufacture cars using the Tesla NACS (North American Charging Standard) for compatibility with Tesla charging stations, and allowing those companies' customers to use Tesla stations.

Federal authorities say a "critical safety gap" in Tesla 's Autopilot system contributed to at least 467 collisions, 13 resulting in fatalities and "many others" resulting in serious injuries. The findings come from a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration analysis of 956 crashes in which Tesla Autopilot was thought to have been in use. Tesla's Autopilot design has "led to foreseeable misuse and avoidable crashes," the NHTSA report said. The agency also said it was opening a new probe into the effectiveness of a software update Tesla previously issued as part of a recall in December. Former Tesla executive Drew Baglino, who announced his resignation earlier this month, sold shares in the electric vehicle company worth around $181.5 million, according to a filing on Thursday with the SEC. Baglino, who joined Tesla in 2006, is selling about 1.14 million of his shares, the filing said, listing an "approximate date of sale" of April 25, and describing it as an exercise of stock options. Tesla announced on April 15 that it's laying off 10% of its global workforce, following a drop in first-quarter deliveries and a steep slide in the stock price. Baglino announced his departure in a statement posted to X. Prior to the latest sale, Baglino had unloaded about $4 million worth of shares in two transactions this year — one in late February and the other in early April, filings show.

Seven stocks in the S & P 500 tend to rise alongside Tesla shares, according to an analysis of recent data by CNBC Pro . The share price performances of these S & P 500 stocks were highly correlated to Tesla's last month. However, unlike Tesla's more than 30% plunge this year, these stocks have either remained flat or have relatively modest negative returns. A correlation of zero would indicate no statistical link between the EV automaker's stock and the share price of the seven companies. The consensus upside potential for the stocks listed above was derived from FactSet's poll of analysts covering each stock.

"If somebody doesn't believe Tesla's going to solve autonomy, I think they should not be an investor in the company," Musk said on the earnings call.
