This industry is defying America’s slowing job market

Enter America’s top job creator: The mighty health care industry. Demand for health care workers remains red hot, according to recent government data on job openings. In June, the health care and social assistance industry had the highest seasonally adjusted job openings rate of any industry, at 7.6%, well above the total rate across the job market of 5.5% that month. That has translated into fatter paychecks for health care workers compared to the general private sector. “Virtually every nurse or health care tech in the country has a job,” Girard said.

Tracey Tee founded Moms on Mushrooms, a platform where moms can discuss, both online and in person, their interest and experiences with microdosing psilocybin mushrooms. "Some girlfriends invited me to a camping trip that summer [in 2020] to just camp out with some moms," Tee says. She lives in Colorado where psilocybin mushrooms are legal to grow, use and share. So, Tee sought out an alternative solution for managing her mental health as she began to wean herself off the SSRI: microdosing psilocybin mushrooms. After years of starts and stops at the box office, Disney appears to have hit a groove in 2024. Its latest Pixar film, “Inside Out 2,” is now the highest-grossing animated film of all time, topping $1.5 billion at the global box office. And the box office hits aren’t expected to stop there. Disney has long been a box office champion, driving significant ticket sales domestically and globally. In the year before the pandemic, Disney had seven theatrical releases top $1 billion at the box office.

Taylor told me that strength training now makes up 90% of her routine. Gyms are quickly becoming Gen Z's favorite hangout spot — but there's just one problem with the fitness boom. It's a troubling thought, to be sure, but a longer workweek is already a reality for some workers. AdvertisementIt's the kind of thing that could make an employer less inclined to try something new — like a four-day workweek. Yet even without lackluster sales, Cappelli said, the four-day workweek was already unlikely to be widely adopted in the US. But, at the same time, Cappelli also doesn't think companies will push workers to come in on a sixth day. If companies use economic worries to reverse course on efforts like flexible work arrangements or to conduct layoffs, they put their own well-being at risk.

Third-party food delivery is becoming the norm for American consumers, as delivery apps like Grubhub, DoorDash and Uber Eats take hold in day-to-day dining. It's also presenting customers and restaurants with an increasingly complicated equation of service fees, delivery costs and worker tips. San Francisco resident Zainab Batool, who said she orders delivery from either Uber Eats or DoorDash weekly, called the added fees "insane." The share of consumers choosing third-party delivery services over direct restaurant delivery is rising, up from 15% in 2020 to 21% in 2024, according to Technomic's 2024 Delivery & Takeout Consumer Trend Report. But using their delivery services instead of paying for in-house delivery is worth it for a business on the smaller side, he said.

But experts and think tanks have long said this is a policy change that an aging China desperately needs. It's currently running a lopsided policy of letting women retire up to 10 years earlier despite them living significantly longer on average than men. The pension problemKey to the retirement overhaul are China's pension funds. AdvertisementMost Chinese workers receive a state pension, which can be boosted by retirement funds from employers and personal contributions. Experts say that either way, Beijing will need more than a simple policy change to fix its crisis.

Li, 27, is part of a growing base of Chinese workers swapping high-pressure office jobs for flexible blue-collar work. But these firms are slowly losing their appeal as China’s economy faces headwinds including a property crisis, declining foreign investment and slumping consumption. The trend to move from professional to manual jobs comes amid surging demand for blue-collar workers, according to Chinese recruitment platform Zhaopin. And blue-collar workers’ pay has also gone up, attracting more people to jobs they might have previously avoided. Pressure of another kindBut some wonder if blue-collar work is truly the stress-free refuge people like Li and Wang imagine it to be.

How to trade Netflix using options ahead of earnings

Netflix earnings are out after the bell Thursday. Breaking down Netflix fundamentals Netflix faces much more competition in the streaming industry than it did a few years ago. These concerns were valid, given that Netflix had accumulated over $10 billion in negative cash flow in the decade leading up to the pandemic through December 2019. Over the four fiscal years from 2020 to 2023, Netflix reported over $10 billion in free cash flow, reversing the negative cash flow of the previous decade. These calls, 8% out of the money, traded for $9 each, representing just under 1.4% of the current stock price.

Whether “football’s coming home” is as unpredictable as ever. But in England, watching this weekend as its men’s national soccer team comes within touching distance of glory, the dreaming and dreading seem less anguished this time around. Three years ago, in the deadly grip of the coronavirus pandemic and the acrid wake of Brexit, England suffered a heartbreaking loss to Italy, on penalty kicks, in the final of the European championships in London. England’s run through that Covid-delayed tournament had lifted a country that badly needed it. The team’s unofficial anthem, “Three Lions,” swelled in pubs and living rooms across the country, offering the hope, however far-fetched, that after five decades of tournament disappointments and 14 months of lockdowns, “football’s coming home,” as the lyrics of the song go.

Barnett says the amount of research she and Andrews poured into their relocation project prompted them to start their own travel company, Expatsi, to help other Americans explore their options to move abroad. In March 2024, Barnett and Andrews led a group of 30 Americans around Portugal for 10 days and Spain for 12 on their inaugural Expatsi scouting trip. Americans who dream of moving abroad are getting help from travel companies like Expatsi, which offers scouting trips to international cities. In today's big story, we're looking at how new AI tools are helping workers bluff their way through interviews .
