Read previewVice President Kamala Harris has made a number of promises as part of her proposed domestic agenda. That's left Democrats with little choice than to go on offense and try to beat Sen. Ted Cruz in Texas and Sen. Rick Scott in Florida. Cruz and Scott we will crystallize the case against them," Peters said. In Texas, Cruz faces Democratic Rep. Colin Allred, who was recently endorsed by former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney. A source close to Scott signaled that the Florida senator isn't sweating it, telling Business Insider that "if national Democrats decide to spend in Florida, Rick Scott will spend more."

On another intractable issue, the Israel-Hamas war, Harris was strong on aspiration, vague on specifics and seemed to fall on both sides of the issue. Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris debate for the first time at the National Constitution Center on September 10, 2024, in Philadelphia. After Tuesday’s onstage meeting, Harris had said that she and her opponent owed it to voters to debate again. Harris’ senior campaign adviser, David Plouffe, blasted Trump on X as “chicken man.”The Republican nominee often changes his mind. He asked, “Wasn’t ‘The Apprentice’ a great show, though?” and wistfully reminisced about the final night of his election campaign in 2016. Will Trump stick to his refusal to debate Harris again? But Bryan Lanza, a senior Trump campaign advisor, insisted that this was a tactical decision.

Michigan and Wisconsin are looking like the best of the bunch for Harris, according to the campaign’s internal numbers. As pumped as Harris aides are about her debate performance earlier this week, they don’t think it changed any of that. “There’s a quiet confidence and security in what we’re doing and the mission, but no one thinks we have this in the bag,” said a Harris campaign aide. We’ll definitely be having some fun,” an Obama aide told CNN. The former president will kick off his work at a fundraiser he’s hosting for Harris next week in Los Angeles.

In this debate tonight, you’re going to hear from the same old, tired playbook, a bunch of lies, grievances and name-calling. The Biden administration kept some Trump tariffs imposed on China, but Harris opposes Trump’s plan to impose new tariffs on all foreign goods. But he said he would have done things differently than Biden after Trump struck an agreement with the Taliban. One of the debate moderators asked if Trump thinks it’s appropriate to comment on the racial identity of his opponent. - TrumpHarris, on the other hand, said Trump has a history of trying to divide the country around race.

Read previewFormer President Donald Trump's advisors and allies scripted his playbook to attack Vice President Kamala Harris during the debate. Harris baited Trump, starting by distracting Trump from talking about his favorite issue of immigration by getting him stewing about crowd size. Harris talked about how the Wharton School of Finance, Trump's beloved alma mater, has published research questioning his economic plans. He clearly seemed annoyed at the ABC News debate moderators who repeatedly interrupted the debate to fact-check his false claims. Trump's team echoed those claims online, arguing that the former president had to take on Harris, Muir, and co-moderator Linsey Davis.

Read previewIt was probably the most noteworthy thing to come out of Kamala Harris' much-anticipated CNN interview late last month: The Vice President, if elected, pledged to appoint a Republican to her Cabinet. "It may be difficult to find a rational, sane person who still identifies as a Republican" that would agree to serve in Harris' cabinet, Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut quipped. "There are a lot of Republicans that I think are capable of assuming Cabinet positions," Rep. Jim McGovern of Massachusetts said. "I'm not floating people's names for particular positions," Rep. Ro Khanna of California said, shortly after heaping praise on Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and former Republican Rep. Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin. Though he said Harris' pledge was a "positive step," he made clear on Tuesday that he's not interested in serving in her administration.

Liz Cheney arrives with her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, to vote at the Teton County Library during the Republican primary election, in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on Aug 16, 2022. Republican former Vice President Dick Cheney will vote for Democrat Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, his daughter Liz Cheney said Friday. A former member of the House from Wyoming, Liz Cheney broke with Trump over the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. When Liz Cheney was up for reelection the following year, Trump successfully worked to defeat her in the state's Republican primary. Liz Cheney on Wednesday became the latest Republican to back Harris when she delivered a surprise endorsement of the Democratic vice president during an event at Duke University.

The campaign is tapping state political directors to lead outreach to Republicans in their regions, the source told NBC News. However, the source said the campaign is having a difficult time locking in support from certain state leadership teams to head GOP outreach. As part of Sunday’s announcement, the Harris campaign said it will unveil a digital campaign where Republican Harris supporters make “their case online to fellow Republicans.”During the 2020 election, the Biden-Harris campaign relied on independent, never-Trump groups to court GOP voters. That source believes former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., will eventually endorse Vice President Kamala Harris, though she was not included in Sunday’s rollout of campaign endorsements. The source also said they suggested that the Harris campaign court the endorsement of former Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., who endorsed President Joe Biden in 2020.

Donald Trump will arrive at the 2024 Republican convention — his Republican convention, finally and completely, without the dissent of 2016 or the pandemic that overshadowed 2020 — closer than ever to a second term. But the likelihood of a Trump restoration has not yet brought clarity about what it would actually usher in. With Trump there is always the whipsaw, the forays toward normalcy and the reversion to a darker mean. Asked on the debate stage whether he would spend a second term seeking revenge on his political enemies, he promised that “my retribution is going to be success. Instead there are Trumpist scenarios and Trumpian personae — whose interactions, if he wins, will give his second term its shape.

Former President Donald J. Trump over the weekend escalated his vows to prosecute his political opponents, circulating posts on his social media website invoking “televised military tribunals” and calling for the jailing of President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Senators Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer and former Vice President Mike Pence, among other high-profile politicians. Mr. Trump, using his account on Truth Social on Sunday, promoted two posts from other users of the site that called for the jailing of his perceived political enemies. One post that he circulated on Sunday singled out Liz Cheney, the former Wyoming congresswoman who is a Republican critic of Mr. Trump’s, and called for her to be prosecuted by a type of military court reserved for enemy combatants and war criminals. “Elizabeth Lynne Cheney is guilty of treason,” the post said. “Retruth if you want televised military tribunals.”

CNN —In the wake of former President Donald Trump’s felony conviction, the “R” in the Republican brand might just as well stand for revenge. Trump nodded to the idea when asked about his conviction, which he has persistently, and with no evidence, blamed on President Joe Biden’s administration. Much of it is aimed at Biden, but there is plenty of anger to go around. In an interview last week, NewsNation’s Blake Burman asked Speaker Mike Johnson about Marjorie Taylor Greene, and before Burman could finish his question, Johnson responded with classic Southern scorn. “Bless her heart,” he said, and then he told Burman that Greene wasn’t proving to be a serious lawmaker and that he didn’t spend a lot of time thinking about her. To understand the significance of this moment, it’s necessary to understand the changing culture of the MAGAfied Republican Party. But there’s an open question: Does the MAGA movement have the same control over the Republican Party when Trump isn’t directly in the fray? If the likes of Greene or Steve Bannon or Matt Gaetz or Charlie Kirk can wield the same power, then the transformation of the party will be complete.

CNN —Former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney said Monday if the Supreme Court does not resolve the issue of presidential immunity “quickly and decisively,” it will have a “profoundly negative impact” on the country. In a New York Times Op-Ed, Cheney argues that, “If delay prevents this Trump case from being tried this year, the public may never hear critical and historic evidence developed before the grand jury, and our system may never hold the man most responsible for Jan. 6 to account.”Her message comes before the high court is set to hear arguments later this month in the blockbuster case over whether Trump may claim immunity from prosecution in the federal election subversion case. Special counsel Jack Smith, who brought the criminal charges, has sought to speed up the proceedings over Trump’s immunity claim so that he can bring the matter to trial as quickly as possible. Trump, however, has told the justices that if they were not willing to grant him full immunity from Smith’s election subversion prosecution, they should send the case back to lower courts for more proceedings – a move that would push off a trial for many months – to determine whether any partial theory of immunity would apply in his case. The alternative route could afford the court’s conservative majority an “off-ramp” that would hamstring the special counsel without taking a blanket view of immunity for former presidents.

On Thursday, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear Donald Trump’s arguments that he is immune from prosecution for his efforts to steal the 2020 presidential election. Special counsel Jack Smith’s election-related indictment of Mr. Trump relies on many of the same firsthand witnesses. Although the special counsel reached a number of the same conclusions as the select committee, the indictment is predicated on a separate and independent investigation. The indictment and public reporting suggest that the special counsel was able to obtain key evidence our committee did not have. Public reporting also suggests that members of Mr. Trump’s Office of White House Counsel and other White House aides testified in full, without any limitations based on executive privilege, as did Vice President Mike Pence and his counsel.
