Opinion | Is This a Sputnik Moment?
  + stars: | 2024-02-17 | by ( Kari A. Bingen | Heather W. Williams | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
But if it is what the White House suggests, we may now find ourselves facing this generation’s Sputnik moment. Now that we know what Russia is planning, the United States cannot afford to be slow to act. The 1967 Outer Space Treaty, to which Russia is a party, prohibits the placement of “nuclear weapons or any other kinds of weapons of mass destruction” in orbit around Earth. While the United States has made advances in space defenses, it would struggle to defend its satellites against a nuclear attack in space. We use satellites to collect intelligence and to detect missile launches, and for navigation, communications and controlling precision weapons.

A sleeper hit at the box office, the film is a "healthy sign" for the romantic comedy genre and other mid-budget Hollywood flicks, said Scott Meslow, author of "From Hollywood With Love: The Rise and Fall (and Rise Again) of the Romantic Comedy." In the seven weeks since, the romantic comedy has tallied $170 million globally, including $80 million from domestic theaters, according to data from Comscore. Between 2004 and 2010, Hollywood consistently released between 15 and 25 romantic comedy or romance films each year. Meslow said there was no rom-com "kill shot," a film or series of films that sparked the decline in theatrical releases of the genre. While some films will still be released only on streaming platforms, Hollywood has rediscovered the importance of theatrical as part of overall downstream revenue.

Its advantage wasn’t lost on Netflix cofounder and former CEO Reed Hastings, who’s namechecked YouTube as a threat to Netflix. YouTube has become a media giant without Hollywood contentMany in media dismiss or overlook YouTube because it doesn’t look like a Hollywood player. Its TV business, YouTube TV, is a bundle of other people’s channels. And YouTube TV is now the fourth-largest pay-TV service in the country, with more than 8 million subscribers. The real threat is that Netflix and YouTube dominate and everyone else fights over a tiny slice of pie.

Read previewWhen Netflix announced it was mulling a ban on password sharing a few years ago, subscribers immediately balked. For years, Netflix turned a blind eye to password sharing, even winkingly encouraging it on social media. Sorry, the password crackdown workedTo the dismay of the #CancelNetflix-ers, the password reckoning has paid off — handsomely. In the third quarter of 2023, Netflix reported that it added 8.8 million subscribers, vastly exceeding expectations. The fourth quarter numbers yielded even better results: 13.1 million global subscribers for a total of more than 260 million, Business Insider's Lucia Moses reported.

CNN —NBCUniversal’s high-stakes decision to exclusively air the NFL’s AFC Wild Card playoff game between the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs on its streaming service Peacock drove record signups to the platform, a digital analytics firm said Wednesday. In the three days leading up to the January 13 kickoff in Kansas City, Peacock saw 2.8 million sign-ups, Antenna reported on Wednesday, citing preliminary data. Prior to the game, Peacock reached roughly 30 million subscribers, a significantly smaller number than CNN parent company Warner Bros. Discovery’s 95 million Max subscribers and Netflix’s 260 million global subscribers. Though it remains unclear just how many of the 2.8 million new subscribers will retain their Peacock service beyond the playoff game, the announcement comes as other streamers also appear to be getting serious about sports. Netflix on Tuesday announced it will stream WWE’s “Raw” beginning in 2025, the company’s biggest foray yet into live sports.

Netflix, which is in a quiet period ahead of earnings, declined CNN’s request for comment. In November, Netflix aired its first-ever live sports event, and its third-ever foray into live programming, called “The Netflix Cup,” a crossover competition between Formula 1 drivers and professional golfers. “We are investing heavily in increasing our live capabilities,” Netflix’s co-CEO Ted Sarandos said on the company’s earnings call in October. Next, Netflix plans to experiment with a new type of live programming: award shows. But even before the announcement, the number of shows and original programming Netflix churned out had already hit its peak, according to data analyzed by MoffettNathanson.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Netflix registered its third-consecutive quarter of accelerating subscriber growth in the final three months of 2023, closing out a comeback year that included a crackdown on viewers freeloading on the video-streaming service and a smattering of price hikes. Political Cartoons View All 253 ImagesThe rising tide of customers left Netflix with more than 260 million global subscribers at the end of 2023 — an annual increase of nearly 30 million subscribers. Last year’s performance was a stark contrast to 2022’s increase of 8.9 million subscribers — a lackluster showing that raised questions whether the video-streaming pioneer was losing steam amid stiffening competition for viewers. The revenue exceeded analysts' forecasts, while earnings per share missed analyst targets, partly because of a $239 million charge tied to its foreign debt. The company's shares rose nearly 7% in Tuesday's extended trading after its fourth-quarter numbers came out.

Netflix announced earlier this month it has 23 million monthly active users on its advertising tier. That may be 12 to 15 million paying subscribers, estimated Evercore ISI analyst Mark Mahaney. The takeaway for Netflix executives may be that most of its audience is content with paying what Netflix is charging. With more content, Netflix may have leverage to convince its users that they should pay more money. Netflix didn't announce a price hike in its quarterly letter or say when one is coming.

Netflix now has 260.8 million paid subscribers, a new record for the service, it said when it reported quarterly results after the bell Tuesday. The subscriber growth easily tops the 8.76 million paid membership adds Netflix reported in the third quarter. The company also blew past Wall Street's fourth-quarter expectations of 8 million to 9 million. The company posted revenue of $8.83 billion for the quarter, up from $7.85 billion in the year-ago quarter. That's up from 15 million that the company reported in November.

Netflix and TKO Group Holdings said Tuesday that the streaming platform will air the WWE's flagship program Raw starting next year, in Netflix's first major foray into live sports. Netflix, which is trying to drive revenue by cutting down on subscription sharing and pushing viewers toward its ad-tier membership, has made few attempts at live programming in its history. With WWE permission, Netflix could even develop movies or series around WWE characters, one of the people said. For TKO, the parent company of WWE, striking a deal with Netflix brings WWE wrestling to about 250 million global subscribers. WWE President Nick Khan has had Netflix on his radar as a potential landing spot for Raw for several years.

The dominant streamer now has more than 260 million global subscribers. The dominant streamer just had its best Q4, adding 13.1 million global subscribers for a total of more than 260 million. This growth widens its lead over newer competitors like Disney+, its closest streaming rival, which trails far behind with 150 million global subscribers. Analysts have questioned how much more growth Netflix can get out of its cheaper ad tier and password-sharing crackdown.

Hollywood stakeholders and analysts alike have declared Netflix the winner of the streaming wars — but the celebration may be short-lived as streaming enters a new phase. Analysts can't say for sure how much more subscriber growth Netflix can add through its cheaper ad tier and password-sharing crackdown, though. Plus, Netflix is about to face big competition for ad dollars from Amazon, which will launch ads on Prime Video starting January 29. Also, Big Tech's ability to fund their streaming services indefinitely could keep subscription prices depressed for Netflix, along with everyone else, Bernstein noted. But now that the strikes are over, some analysts predict Netflix will face a bigger content bill going forward.

New York CNN —Republican presidential candidates Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis sparred on a wide range of economic issues during the CNN GOP presidential debate on Wednesday evening. But as Haley and DeSantis duked it out to crown themselves the most fiscally prudent candidate, some clear economic themes began to emerge that will likely have a big influence on the upcoming Republican primaries and beyond: China, debt levels and the government’s role in business. ChinaBoth Haley and DeSantis sought to prove how tough they could be on China. But as my colleague Elisabeth Buchwald points out, the US and China are the first- and second-largest economies in the world. President Joe Biden has also made reducing economic dependence on China a platform in both his 2020 and 2024 campaigns.

Creators rejoice: Netflix is finally revealing viewership statistics on nearly all of its shows and movies. Netflix has long had a reputation for lack of transparency about the popularity of its shows and movies. Netflix has also launched an advertising tier that demands more transparency as brands want information about how frequently certain shows and movies are watched. Between January and June, 55% of Netflix viewing came from original films and series and 45% from licensed titles, Sarandos said. Netflix revealed viewing information for more than 18,000 titles, accounting for 99% of all its viewing and all titles watched more than 50,000 hours.
