Tech jobs are mired in a recession
  + stars: | 2024-11-18 | by ( Aki Ito | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +9 min
But ask white-collar professionals who are actually looking for a job, and they'll tell you horror stories that are eerily similar to Bach's. As I wrote last spring, that's because the job market has essentially split into two distinct tiers. AdvertisementNow, new data from LinkedIn — which tracked how often its users landed new jobs — shows which white-collar jobs are being hit the hardest. AdvertisementAnother reason tech companies are hiring fewer professionals is that their existing employees are opting to stay put. "We're slowly, slowly recovering," says Art Zeile, the CEO of Dice, a tech job board.

The hour-long conversation marked the return of diplomacy to the decade-long conflict, even if their talk brought the familiar refrain it was not yet time to talk. One Western official said there was an “overall collective holding of breath” in Western capitals ahead of Trump’s inauguration. “The Germans speaking to Putin – that will have gone down badly” among Ukraine’s allies, the official said. “Giving Putin that positive bounce will have irked the French and others.” French President Emmanuel Macron has been particularly vocal about continuing support for Ukraine. Kremlin critics also warn of its history of using diplomacy as a pause or foil to pursuing its military goals.

What was supposed to be a simple birthday treat devolved into the latest flashpoint after “The View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg implied that a New York bakery refused to take her order because of her liberal politics. But the distinctive polka-dotted packaging on the cakes left local viewers little doubt about which business she was talking about: Holtermann’s Bakery in Staten Island. Goldberg and Holtermann’s Bakery did not immediately respond to NBC News’ requests for comment. I’m tripping over their bodies,” said Sydney Seiler, the U.S. national intelligence officer for North Korea from 2020 to 2023. “Kim Jong Un is selling North Korean soldiers as cannon fodder mercenaries,” South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun said last month. It’s an entirely new environment for the North Korean soldiers, who live in one of the most isolated and repressive countries in the world. The Russian military is teaching the North Korean soldiers about 100 key military terms, but “North Koreans are having a difficult time learning Russian,” South Korean lawmakers Lee Sung-kwon and Park Sun-won said last month. Gen Z is ushering in the all-inclusive era

A survey included in the report found 42% of Gen Z respondents said an all-inclusive was their preferred hotel type, more than any other generation. AdvertisementWhy Gen Z loves all-inclusivesOnce guests book their stays at an all-inclusive, very little additional planning is required. Its $2.7 billion acquisition of Apple Leisure Group in 2021 made it the largest operator of luxury all-inclusive resorts worldwide. AdvertisementAnd Hilton said earlier this year their all-inclusive segment was a "catalyst for growth," noting its Hilton Cancun Mar Caribe All-Inclusive Resort that opened in 2023. For Gen Z in particular there may be an intangible benefit of all-inclusives that will continue to drive demand.

The Summary Trump plans to tap Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to be his health and human services secretary. Kennedy has spread misinformation about vaccines, fluoride, raw milk and other topics. Kennedy has also referred to the Covid vaccine as “the deadliest vaccine ever made,” despite data showing it’s overwhelmingly safe. As many as 30 states allow raw milk to be sold, but the FDA regulates its sale across state lines. But Kennedy has cast doubt on those findings, claiming without evidence that the drugs were discredited because various groups stood to make money off Covid vaccines.

U.S. consumers collectively owe an eye-popping $1.17 trillion in credit card debt — a record — according to estimates the Federal Reserve Bank of New York released this week. But while there are still major financial risks for carrying hefty balances, the researchers said the data suggests that “rising debt burdens remain manageable” for the typical consumer. Prices are still going up, but they’re not going up as fast, and incomes are once again going up at a faster rate than expenses. Earnings growth has averaged 6.2% per year since the pandemic began, compared to the cumulative debt balance rising 4% per year. “Especially for higher-risk borrowers, credit card and auto loan delinquencies are the highest in a dozen years, and that’s with unemployment at 4%.

Beneath the snowy slopes lay a prehistoric surprise: an ecosystem that predates the dinosaurs, revealed by melting snow before being stumbled upon by a hiker in the Italian Alps. Intrigued, she snapped photos and shared them with her friend, Elio Della Ferrera, a nature photographer. Della Ferrera then contacted Dal Sasso, at the museum in Milan, to learn more about the discovery. These environmental shifts contributed to the extinction of many species, which we may now encounter as fossils on a fortunate hike. “The past has much to teach us about what we risk doing to the world today,” the researchers warned.

WASHINGTON — When President Joe Biden relinquishes power in January, some parts of his legacy will be secure, while others may be undone by President-elect Donald Trump and a new Republican-controlled Congress. The pieces of Biden’s legacy go into four buckets. But it will be difficult for Trump to undo bipartisan legislation, such as measures about infrastructure and preventing gun violence, and the judges Biden appointed can’t be unseated. Biden’s immigration orders are ripe for Trump to target after he ran on a platform of mass deportations and clamping down on border security. Bipartisan Biden-era bills (largely safe)The parts of Biden’s legacy that will be relatively safe are the bipartisan laws he passed, which are subject to filibusters and therefore give Democrats the power to protect them.

Why the C-suite is getting so big

Beyond the usual top jobs, some organizations now have chief experience officers, chief AI-ethics officers, and chief transformation officers. LinkedIn said in September that those were the fastest-growing C-suite roles on its platform from 2022 to 2023. Janet SherlockBut she said a lineup that includes a chief marketing officer, a chief information officer, and a chief customer-experience officer might indicate insufficient internal coordination. "Do I need a customer-experience officer whenever I have a chief commercial officer, a chief information officer, and a chief marketing officer?"
