CNN —A shoe belonging to a child and dating back more than 2,000 years has been unearthed in Austria with its laces still intact. The condition of the shoe found is outstanding,” Professor Thomas Stoellner, head of the Research Department at the German Mining Museum, said in the press release. Excavation work at Dürrnberg is being done to obtain information on the work and lives of Iron age miners, according to the museum. Finding a child’s shoe is “always something special,” because it shows that children were present underground, the museum said. Finds like this child’s shoe, but also textile remains or excrement like those found on Dürrnberg, offer an extremely rare insight into the life of Iron Age miners.”

Many clothes contain synthetic fabrics that release plastic into the water when laundered. How you do your laundry may be increasing your plastic output, which can harm marine life. Some ways to avoid this include using cold water and washing your clothes less often. That's right, the simple act of washing synthetic fabrics, like polyester, acrylic, and nylon releases microplastics. AdvertisementAdvertisementLuckily, there are things you can do in the immediate to reduce how much microplastics you may be sending into the environment.

LONDON, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Paul Costelloe opened London Fashion Week on Friday, with the Irish designer saying he was "bringing back a bit of romance" to the catwalks with feminine dresses and soft, fluid looks. It’s widely agreed that the official poverty measure — the one that showed an uptick in poverty last year — is outdated and inaccurate. The supplemental poverty measure is better, but it has problems of its own. It’s sometimes described as a “quasi” relative measure, which makes me queasy. An absolute measure of poverty sets a threshold for what constitutes poverty and sticks with it year after year, adjusting only for inflation. A relative measure sets the poverty threshold in relation to how other people live — for instance, as a percentage of the median income — so poverty tends to get redefined upward over time.

Fiber Art Is Finally Being Taken Seriously

Made of more than 3,000 “ponytails” of linen thread, as the artist called them, stitched together and piled atop one another, it looked at first glance like something one might encounter in a commercial fabric store. Neither traditional sculpture nor painting, it conjured both, a monumental object made from the humblest materials. The show that featured Hicks’s work, “Wall Hangings,” was a rare American institutional endorsement of artists who make ambitious work out of fiber and broadened the idea of what art could be. But the exhibition received only one major review, in the niche publication Craft Horizons, by the sculptor Louise Bourgeois. If they must be classified, they would fall somewhere between fine and applied art.” They “rarely liberate themselves from decoration,” she concluded, deploying what might be art’s most insulting critical term.

“Irving made it possible for us to buy that work of art, pure and simple,” said Glenn D. Lowry, MoMA’s longtime director. Born Dec. 1, 1930, in New York, where his father owned furniture stores, Blum moved to Phoenix when he was 10. Blum met the collectors who came to visit galleries in the area. Blum came back with a painting by Josef Albers — a pioneer of color in abstract art — and he was on his way. Then in 1956 the gallerist David Herbert took Blum to meet Ellsworth Kelly.

The knee-deep channels, dating back 2,800 years, are located outside Jerusalem's walled Old City. "We looked at the installation and realised that we had stumbled on something unique," said archaeologist Yiftah Shalev in a joint statement, dubbing the discovery a "mystery". The channels may have been used to prepare a commodity "connected to the economy of the temple or palace", said archaeologist Yuval Gadot in the statement. "The production of linen, for example, requires soaking the flax for a long time to soften it. The find, part of Israel's City of David National Park, will go on public display next week, the statement said.

New York CNN —Target is recalling 2.2 million candles following reports that the glass jars containing them are “breaking or cracking during use,” resulting in one minor injury. In an alert issued Thursday, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said that the recalled Threshold candles are a 5.5-ounce, 1-wick scented candles and several dozen 20-ounce 3-wick candles of various scents. The CPSC said that “consumers should immediately stop using the recalled candles” and return them to a Target location for a refund or contact the store for a return label to return it by mail. It’s the second recall for various Threshold candles in a few months. In May, Target recalled nearly five million candles because of similar problems.

How to pick the coolest clothing for a heat wave

As the planet warms, experts say picking the right clothing to beat the heat will be critical to your health and well-being. Allow sweat to evaporateHumans are designed to self-regulate body temperature by radiating heat directly off the skin and by sweating. “But while you’re exercising, it would be a great choice.”At this time, however, no wardrobe choices can protect the body from really intense heat, Katta said. “The National Weather Service has done a great job of emphasizing the heat index, which considers both heat and humidity, and I think it’s really important,” Katta said. “We can create textiles, clothing and accessories as a form of health, for medicine, for human comfort,” Hu said.

With streaming disrupting the economics of the TV and film industries, it doesn’t help to alienate your audience with political posturing like Disney has with its refashioning of classic fairy tales including the upcoming 'Snow White.' The debate in the West—and, notably, Japan—has been civilized for our bad-tempered times, with historians, philosophers and “fact checkers” chewing intently on the film’s abundant fodder. Only in India has the movie sparked outraged dissent, with calls by officials from its Hindu nationalist government for it to be censored.

I shopped at Abercrombie & Fitch's new store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. I was surprised by how sophisticated everything was, including the store's design and the clothing. So I was surprised to see the company's new location on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan — it felt like a different brand. "This is truly the most powerful brand transformation that I've seen in my career," CEO Fran Horowitz told analysts in an earnings call in May. That brand transformation was evident during my recent trip to Abercrombie's store.

Paris/London CNN —France is to introduce a scheme that will subsidize repairs to clothing and shoes in order to cut waste and planet-heating pollution from the textile industry. “What I hope is that the French will become aware of what we can see, that is the impact of the textile industry across the world today,” she said. Tailors, clothes brands and repair shops can join the initiative for free via Refashion, which will collect a small “eco-contribution” on sales to cover the subsidy. Refashion will then arrange for the companies signed up to the scheme to be refunded within 15 days. The scheme follows a similar French initiative for white goods such as fridges and washing machines.

Instead, Ms. Stangl walked toward a king-size bed with a parchment-colored backboard. Enough shoppers have asked if they were for sale — the answer: Not yet, but Ms. Stangl and her team are taking a limited number of pre-orders for the fall. Another 25% will come from "next-generation" materials in which the group is investing, and the remaining 10% from other sustainable sources, the company said. The new targets come as the European Commission is drawing up regulations to make clothing retailers pay for the waste they produce, arguing that fast-fashion companies "encourage customers to shop impulsively and incentivise purchasing larger quantities of clothes". Its draw is also in the departures from tradition. Without them, Aix would be another Salzburg instead of the most interesting opera festival in Europe — though at this point in Pierre Audi’s tenure as artistic director, “opera” is too limiting a label, with a slate over the past week of film, music theater, concerts and, yes, opera, including two new works, each of vastly different character. Many summer festivals exist primarily for the pleasure of music-making beyond the usual concert halls and theaters. In this edition, not everything succeeded artistically (or with audiences); some of what I saw was reckless, some of it offensive. In the pit, so to speak, was the Orchestre de Paris under the baton of its music director, Klaus Mäkelä.

Some say GOAT’s origins actually spring from a flamboyant, blond-tressed wrestler, George Wagner, who was known as Gorgeous George and who in the 1940s and ’50s earned lavish paydays by turning trash talk into fine art. “So keep on bragging, keep on sassing, and always be outrageous.”This week marks the moment when sport’s most legitimate GOAT talk hovers over tennis and an event its organizers not-so-humbly call the Championships. That will drive fans of Rafael Nadal, who is stuck at 22 major titles, to distraction. They will argue that their idol would have won 25 major titles (or more) by now, if not for injuries.
