Nonpartisan forecasts and polls show Republicans are heavy favorites to win control of the House of Representatives, with the Senate a toss-up. In recent weeks momentum has shifted toward the Republicans, Democratic strategists acknowledge, as voters' concerns about inflation and crime have outweighed those about abortion after the Supreme Court ended the nationwide right to abortion in June. For Democrats, Sunday's rallies in areas traditionally friendly to the party are a last-minute chance to minimize losses on Tuesday. Florida for years swung from party to party, but has recently trended Republican and is not considered a major battleground this election. Trump's frequent rallies maintain his profile as he weighs launching a third run for the White House after the midterms, according to advisers.
Trump, meanwhile, will appear in Miami alongside both the state's U.S. senators and several U.S. representatives. Trump's frequent rallies have served to maintain his own profile as he contemplates launching a third run for the White House after the midterms, according to advisers. Both Trump and Biden appeared in Pennsylvania on Saturday, as did former Democratic President Barack Obama. For Democrats, the Sunday rallies - held in areas that are traditionally friendly to the party - are a last-minute opportunity to minimize losses on Tuesday. In recent weeks, the momentum has shifted toward the Republicans, Democratic strategists acknowledge, as voters' concerns about inflation and crime have proven more durable than concerns about abortion.
Crime Doesn’t Pay for Democrats

Lee Zeldin was always a longshot for Governor in Democratic New York. But one issue has given him a real chance: crime. A poll this week from the Pew Research Center underscores why it has become such an albatross for Democratic candidates this year. The poll reports a healthy majority of registered voters (61%) saying violent crime is very important to their vote, about the same as energy policy (also 61%) but above abortion (56%), immigration (54%) and “issues around race and ethnicity” (34%). As you’d expect, Republican voters (73%) think crime is more of an issue than Democrats (49%) do.
Zeldin hopes to end a two-decade drought for Republicans seeking statewide office in New York. “New Yorkers are ready,” Zeldin said. Her support in a primary for an upstate congressional district of right-wing political activist Carl Paladino who lost to the state Republican chair drew the ire of some in the state party. While there are about 3 million unaffiliated voters in New York, a successful Republican candidate has to make inroads with registered Democrats. “When I got elected they were saying the same things about me that they’re saying about Zeldin,” Pataki said.
He said the spouses of some high-profile lawmakers may need security details in the future, in addition to using home security systems. Court documents allege the suspect had been in search of the House speaker and was on a "suicide mission" with additional targets. However, "there are not enough resources available to me to do that," she said on MSNBC following the attack on Paul Pelosi. “Bloodshed is coming," Swalwell tweeted at the time, foreshadowing the Pelosi attack. The Paul Pelosi attack was foreseeable," Schuman said.

Trump issued a re-endorsement for GOP Sen. Mike Lee of Utah after DeSantis shot an ad for him. "The Great People of Utah have a gem in Mike Lee," he said. "Senator Lee has the support of a broad range of conservatives including President Trump, Gov. "To get America on the right path forward we need a Republican majority in the Senate and that's why I'm proud to endorse Mike Lee," DeSantis said in the ad for Lee. Trump helped DeSantis secure the 2018 Republican gubernatorial nomination, but this round DeSantis has not asked for Trump's endorsement.
Lee Zeldin Visits Kathy Hochul Country

Kenmore, N.Y. This village of 15,000 in Erie County, immediately north of Buffalo, lies squarely in Kathy Hochul country. New York’s Democratic governor was born in Buffalo and represented the area in Congress before becoming lieutenant governor in 2013. A young Republican Party worker tells me that the Democrats have “a 2-to-1 enrollment advantage” in Kenmore, but we’re standing in a hall packed with supporters of Rep. Lee Zeldin , Ms. Hochul’s Republican challenger, who hails from Long Island’s Suffolk County, more than 450 miles away. Most statewide polls show Ms. Hochul, once a prohibitive favorite, leading only by single digits.
All violent crime – including offenses such as rape and assault – went up 5.2%. FBI data showed violent crime overall dropped in 2021 while murders rose 4%, though a change in the agency's methodology means some police departments were unable to report crime statistics. WHY DID CRIME RISE DURING THE PANDEMIC? Experts have pointed to several causes for the rise in violent crime during the pandemic. FBI data showed more than three-quarters of all 2020 murders were committed by firearms, the highest share ever reported.
Ronna McDaniel said it was "unfair" to link GOP messaging to the attack on Paul Pelosi on Sunday. Nancy Pelosi, who has led House Democrats since 2003, has long been a political foil for the GOP. McDaniel pushed back against any allegations that GOP messaging was problematic or incited violence and instead flipped the narrative to lambast Democrats. "But I think the other thing to remember is, if this weren't Paul Pelosi, this criminal would probably be out on the street tomorrow." "But of course we wish Paul Pelosi a recovery.

Oct 28 (Reuters) - The assault on U.S. businessman Paul Pelosi, the husband of U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, in their San Francisco home early on Friday morning comes amid a rising number of reported threats against members of Congress. According to data provided by the United States Capitol Police, a law enforcement agency charged with protecting members of Congress, cases related to "concerning statements and threats" jumped from 3,939 in 2017 to 9,625 in 2021. Aug. 29, 2022 - A Pennsylvania man pleaded guilty to threatening to shoot and kill an unnamed member of Congress, federal prosecutors said. Four of the people who stormed the Capitol died on the day of the attack. June 14, 2017 - U.S. Republican Representative Steve Scalise, then-Majority Whip, was shot in the hip and taken to the hospital after a gunman opened fire on Republican members of Congress at a baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia, for their annual congressional charity game with Democratic members.

The New York Post's website and Twitter account were hacked Thursday, as racist and sexually explicit headlines about Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and President Joe Biden were published. A New York Post spokesperson confirmed in an email to CNBC that the posts resulted from a hack. Representatives for the president, Ocasio-Cortez and Adams didn't immediately respond to requests for comment. Content management system Wordpress, which enables publishing to the New York Post site, didn't immediately respond to comment, either. The company, which also uses WordPress, suspended its website immediately.

REUTERS/Cindy Schultz/File PhotoNEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Governor Kathy Hochul will square off on Tuesday night in her only debate against Republican challenger Lee Zeldin, who has hammered the Democratic incumbent over crime in a race that public opinion polls show is tightening. The state’s majority Democratic electorate has not chosen a Republican governor since 2002. But recent polling suggests Zeldin is gaining on Hochul, prompting the governor to put new focus on public safety in the final weeks of her campaign. She released an ad on Friday that pledged “a safer New York for every child” and touted legislation she backed that toughened gun laws and bail restrictions.
For the second time in as many election cycles, Democrats are launching an 11th-hour rescue mission to save the very House campaigns chief responsible for protecting vulnerable incumbents and preserving their fragile House majority. The DCCC also informed front-line members before announcing the ad buy in Maloney's district, a Democratic aide said. He’s built a campaign and we’ve built an operation at the DCCC that can support that reality,” Taylor said. In an interview with NBC News earlier this year, Maloney laid out that very playbook for protecting vulnerable incumbent Democrats. “While Lawler was voting against common sense gun safety reforms like not allowing teenagers to buy semi-automatic weapons, Rep. Maloney was helping pass bipartisan gun safety reforms,” Ehrenberg said in a statement.
Kathy Hochul Is No Crime Fighter

Kathy Hochul failed to address seriously the crime and disorder that her constituents are seeing in the streets. But now that Lee Zeldin is rising in the polls and giving voters a credible GOP alternative, suddenly Ms. Hochul is jumping out of a phone booth wearing a Superman Halloween costume. Ms. Hochul is now running an ad that says she’s trying to guarantee “a safe walk home at night, a subway ride free of fear.” For the grim reality, read the New York Post, where America’s hardest working police reporters cover America’s hardest working criminals. “A 62-year-old was punched in the face during an unprovoked attack at a Bronx subway station on Sunday night and tumbled onto the tracks,” the paper reported early in the a.m. Monday. “Luckily there was no train pulling into the station.”
How bad is one-party progressive rule in New York? Bad enough that it’s becoming conceivable that a disaffected Democratic electorate might rebel on Nov. 8 by picking a Republican for Governor. With three weeks to go, the GOP’s Lee Zeldin trails incumbent Gov. New York is among the nation’s most Democratic states, and President Biden took 60% of the vote in 2020. The fact that Mr. Zeldin appears competitive is a sign of frustration with Democratic policy excesses and their demonstrable damage to the city and state.
U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R., N.Y.) has represented the eastern two-thirds of Suffolk County since 2015 and is attempting to unseat New York’s Democratic governor. Two men were shot Sunday afternoon in front of the Long Island home of U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin , the Republican candidate for governor of New York, according to police and Mr. Zeldin’s campaign. The men were taken to area hospitals where they are being treated, police said. Mr. Zeldin’s two daughters were home alone when they heard screaming and gunshots and called the police from the bathroom where they went to hide, Mr. Zeldin said. Mr. Zeldin and his wife were leading the Bronx Columbus Day Parade at the time.
“After my daughters heard the gunshots and the screaming, they ran upstairs, locked themselves in the bathroom and immediately called 911," Zeldin said. "They acted very swiftly and smartly every step of the way and Diana and I are extremely proud of them.”Police officers near the home of Rep. NBC 4 New YorkSuffolk County police said Sunday they were investigating a shooting outside a residence in Shirley, New York, at around 2 p.m. that left two people injured.
