CNN —Approximately 100 letters containing a white powder have been received by state legislators and public officials across Kansas, officials said, setting off an investigation that includes state and federal agencies. Republican state Rep. Stephen Owens said he also received one of the letters and believes the others who received them are fellow Republicans. A copy of the letter received by Kansas Rep. Russia will scale up its war if the west keeps supplying Ukraine with weapons, its ambassador to the UK Andrei Kelin said Saturday. "This escalation will get a new dimension which we do not need and do not want," Kelin told the BBC. His warning came as a top Ukrainian official said the country was ready to launch a counter-offensive. Andrei Kelin told the BBC that Western military aide would prolong the 15-month conflict – and warned that the longer that dragged on, the more likely Russia was to scale up its attacks. Russia is 16 times bigger than Ukraine," Kelin added.

But now there is a discrepancy about, 'Is sex gender and can I change it?' Major medical and psychological associations endorse gender-affirming care and say transgender identities should be respected, while conservative groups claim that children are too easily allowed to transition. While researchers say sex generally refers to physiological characteristics and gender is more a social construct, when it comes to federal civil rights law, they are essentially the same. "By defining sex so narrowly, you are excluding LGBTQ people from bringing claims in state court based on discrimination on the basis of sex," said Sarah Warbelow, HRC's legal director. The laws also stand to limit nontransgender people who have a discrimination claim based on sex stereotyping, Warbelow said.

WSJ’s Daniela Hernandez explains how over-the-counter access could affect reproductive care across the U.S. Photo: Laura KammermannAs efforts to crack down on abortion increase around the U.S., contraceptives are bound to play an increasingly important role in family planning. But for many women, cost and access are still prohibitive factors. A cheaper, over-the-counter option could help close that gap while creating a sizable market for generic drugmaker Perrigo . Advisers to the Food and Drug Administration earlier this week recommended that Perrigo’s oral contraceptive, called Opill, be made available without prescription. If the recommendation is adopted by the FDA, it would help widen access to birth control around the country.
FDA Advisers Back Over-the-Counter Birth-Control Pill

Photo: Laura KammermannAdvisers to the Food and Drug Administration recommended making an oral contraceptive available without a prescription for the first time, potentially widening access to birth control for women across the country. The panel of FDA advisers voted 17 to 0 on Wednesday that there was enough evidence for the agency to approve the medication’s sale over-the-counter. The FDA, which is expected to make a final decision this summer, doesn’t have to follow the expert panel’s advice, though it often does.
A nationwide baby-formula shortage had some desperate parents driving hours in search of supplies. Dr. Steven Abrams, a pediatrician at the University of Texas at Austin, explained what parents should and shouldn’t do amid the crisis. Photo illustration: Laura KammermannIn a bid to help prevent another infant-formula crisis, U.S. health officials are expected to vote next month on a change designed to better warn of any uptick in bacterial infections in babies. The action would add infections from cronobacter, the bacteria that sickened four babies and fueled last year’s shortage, to a list of roughly 120 nationally notifiable diseases. Federal officials believe that designation will more quickly alert them to possible outbreaks and gather more information, including genetic data, to help them better understand and prevent the infections.

From a high-stakes legal battle over the abortion pill mifepristone, to states debating their own legislation, WSJ’s Laura Kusisto highlights where abortion access stands now and what could come next. Photo Illustration: Preston JesseeNorth Carolina’s Republican-led legislature passed a ban on most abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy, setting the state on a path to restricting access that could ultimately reverberate across the region. North Carolina has become a crucial access point for patients in the Southeast seeking abortions after the Supreme Court last year overturned Roe v. Wade and many states in the region enacted near-total bans on the procedure.
The Proud Boys, a far-right group, have tried to downplay their role in the Capitol riot. A WSJ investigation in 2021 showed that at many of the day’s key moments, Proud Boys were at the forefront. Illustration: Laura KammermannWASHINGTON—A jury found four leading figures of the Proud Boys, including its former chairman Enrique Tarrio , guilty of seditious conspiracy, the gravest charge brought in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. The verdict on Thursday, which left some charges against a fifth member of the far-right group undecided, came more than a week after the jury started deliberating in a trial that dragged out for more than three months over legal objections and other courtroom wrangling between federal prosecutors and defense lawyers.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis suspended state attorney Andrew Warren over his pledge to not prosecute cases related to abortion. Photo Composite: Emily SiuA federal appeals court on Tuesday will hear arguments over whether a Tampa-area prosecutor who was suspended by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis should get his job back, the most high-profile example of the growing confrontations between state officials and local prosecutors who decline to enforce certain laws. In recent years, dozens of liberal local prosecutors have made promises not to enforce bans on abortion or certain low-level drug offenses, which they say are harmful to their communities and a poor use of limited resources.
The North Carolina Supreme Court tossed court-approved maps used in the November election—which resulted in seven congressional seats apiece for Republicans and Democrats. Photo: Sean Rayford/Getty ImagesThe North Carolina Supreme Court, with a new Republican majority elected last year, on Friday threw out some of its own recent decisions that endorsed a broad view of voting rights, reinstating a voter-identification law and rejecting a challenge to electoral maps drawn by the state’s Republican-controlled legislature. The court, in a third decision, also rolled back voting rights for some people with felony convictions.

The Met Gala, which will be held next week, serves as the unofficial birthday party for Vogue magazine. The outfits at Time’s 100 Most Influential People in the World gala, held last night at Jazz at Lincoln Center, generally don’t involve as much forethought, but it is nevertheless an opulent affair. Tiffany Haddish wore a red and black sequined gown and Natasha Lyonne was in a black Area dress with a bedazzled oyster bodice. The storied masquerade party and annual gala dinner raises money to preserve the artworks of the flood-threatened Italian city. The event raised $1.2 million and transformed the Plaza into an arms-in-the-air dance party with the D.J.

Republican efforts to restrict gender-transitioning treatment hit roadblocks in three states on Wednesday. Across the country, transgender rights have emerged this year as a defining legislative issue, with Republicans enacting sweeping new restrictions in states they control. In just the past few weeks, new bans have been signed into law in Idaho, Indiana and North Dakota, with similar policies still under consideration in other states. Laura Kelly’s veto of a bill that would have revoked the medical licenses of doctors who provided gender-transitioning care to children and allowed people who received that treatment as children to sue their doctors. In Missouri, a state judge blocked new restrictions, which were set to take effect on Thursday, until at least Monday evening.
CNN —A group of New York Democrats announced support for federal legislation aimed at regulating lithium-ion battery safety standards after a spate of fires caused by the batteries malfunctioning or overheating. Lithium-ion batteries, found in many popular consumer products like e-scooters and smartphones, have been under scrutiny amid increasing reports of explosive fires triggered by the batteries, which use flammable materials. The incident followed a Manhattan apartment building fire in November that injured at least 38 people and was blamed on a lithium-ion battery connected to a micromobility device. The new lithium-ion battery safety bill was announced last month by Rep. Ritchie Torres, D-NY, who said the legislation would save lives and protect property. Torres said the latest fire is another reminder “of the escalating threat lithium-ion batteries poses to the public’s safety,” according to a news release.

The group was officially created in 1969 as the “Abortion Counseling Service of Women’s Liberation.”But after running ads in an underground newspaper: “Pregnant? “It wasn’t just abortion,” Barron explained. “Vacuum aspiration was much easier to do, and I think it’s less difficult for the woman,” Scott said. We had to keep the service running.”Laura Kaplan volunteered for the Janes, later immortalizing the group in her book, "The Story of Jane: The Legendary Underground Feminist Abortion Service." Each Jane was charged with 11 counts of abortion and conspiracy to commit abortion, with a possible sentence of up to 110 years in prison.
A Reuters review of testimony, previously unreported public documents and interviews with elected leaders, lobbyists and attorneys detail mounting challenges to many pending anti-ESG bills. The tussles have financial implications for some of the largest investment firms that manage billions of dollars for state pension plans. Lauren Doroghazi, senior vice president at government relations consultant MultiState Associates, said the debates show lawmakers coming to terms with the anti-ESG bills' practical impact. Several public pension systems raised concerns about it, including the largest, the $182 billion Texas Teacher Retirement System (TRS). For instance, if federally-regulated local banks faced new national rules on an issue like climate change disclosures, banks would need special permissions from local officials to keep public business in Utah he said.
