CNN —The New York Yankees clinched an American League Championship Series (ALCS) spot on Thursday night with a 3-1 win over the Kansas City Royals which saw them take the American League Division Series (ALDS) by the same score. Starter Gerrit Cole was the game’s dominant force, giving up just one run and six hits across seven innings, striking out four. The victory sees New York advance to the 19th Championship Series in its history, four more than any other franchise. Kansas City, meanwhile, has now lost its last nine games at Kauffman Stadium. It was the closest Kansas City would come, Aaron Judge recording the final out in the ninth to send New York through.

An annular solar eclipse was seen in parts of South America on Wednesday, creating a blazing “ring of fire” in the sky. Annular solar eclipses occur when the moon passes between Earth and the sun and the moon is near or at the farthest point in its orbit from Earth. The moon doesn’t completely block the sun as it does during a total solar eclipse, which is what causes the ring of fire effect. Although the path of the eclipse tracked over the Pacific and Atlantic oceans and Antarctica, only parts of Argentina and Chile, including Easter Island, were able to see the ring of fire.

Pete Rose, who holds the Major League Baseball record for hits and games played, has died at the age of 83, according to a spokesperson for the Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner in Nevada. The hard-charging Rose, nicknamed “Charlie Hustle,” broke Ty Cobb’s 57-year-old hits record in 1985. After his playing career, Rose continued as manager of the Reds.
