Tokenizing real-world assets on a blockchain is one of the buzziest topics of the year, and this time it isn't just coming from financial incumbents like Citi, JPMorgan and Northern Trust, it's coming from crypto native players, too. As the world of crypto becomes more connected to the broader financial market, the appetite for tokenizing real-world assets, or RWA, is coming from smaller participants as well. Kraken Ventures' Stuti Pandey said since tokenization's last hype cycle, RWAs have benefited from changes in economics, technology and credibility. "Over the past few years, interest rates have been very depressed and that has favored very high growth, high risk assets," she said. Now that rates are down, it's actually these real-world assets that have interesting yield."

Sept 21 (Reuters) - Australia's corporate regulator said on Thursday it had initiated civil proceedings against Bit Trade Pty Ltd, provider of the Kraken crypto exchange to Australian customers, for failing to comply with design and distribution obligations for its margin trading product. The design and distribution obligations (DDO) require firms to design financial products that meet the needs of consumers and distribute them in a targeted manner. Bit Trade's margin trading product is a credit facility as it provides customers credit to buy and sell certain crypto assets on the Kraken exchange, ASIC said. It said at least 1,160 customers had used the margin trading product, incurring a total loss of about A$12.95 million ($8.35 million) since DDO began in October 2021. A Manhattan federal judge said in an opinion that cryptocurrencies are considered securities regardless of how they are sold. U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff's decision Monday complicates SEC's litigation with both Ripple and crypto exchange Coinbase. The Ripple ruling was considered a win by the industry because it said a cryptocurrency may or may not be a security depending on who's buying it. The SEC has argued in cases against Binance, Coinbase and Kraken that many cryptocurrencies listed on popular exchanges are securities. The SEC has pursued numerous other crypto firms over the alleged unregistered offer and sale of securities, including Coinbase , Gemini and Genesis.

And, in that same earnings call earlier this year, Novogratz said Galaxy hired some traders based in Hong Kong. Just this week, Societe General 's crypto arm received approval by France's financial regulator to offer crypto services, including crypto assets. The next month, Hong Kong implemented a new licensing regime so crypto exchanges can serve retail customers. Hong Kong, in particular, has tried to position itself as an international hub for crypto. Coinbase (COIN.O) and Binance.US, two of the largest crypto exchanges by market share among those operating in America, have lost ground this year. Bitstamp's global market share among exchanges operating in the U.S. has risen to about 9%. Coinbase and LMAX declined to comment on the data, while Binance.US - the American affiliate of the world's largest crypto exchange - didn't respond to a request for comment. It may not be that simple for hungry challengers to grab market share, according to market players. In years gone by, crypto exchanges could swiftly gobble up business by offering access to a swathe of coins.

Hit and missOf course, quality is a big factor in a film's box office success, too. That pullback has already begun with the 2023 summer movie season. Starting the first Friday in May and running until Labor Day weekend, the summer movie season typically represents 40% of all movie ticket sales for the year. So far through July 2, the summer box office has tallied $1.88 billion. In summer 2022, the box office got a boost from Tom Cruise's "Top Gun: Maverick," a Paramount and Skydance feature.

Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros.” movie and Sony’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” both animated films, have racked up big ticket sales this year. The successes of "Super Mario Bros." and "Spider-Man" also reflect a new post-COVID-19 trend at box offices, Hollywood insiders say. Catmull and other members of the original brain trust are gone, though Docter remains, now in the role of chief creative officer. WASHINGTON, June 8 (Reuters) - Other U.S. crypto exchanges are likely to be in the firing line after the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) this week sued Coinbase and Binance, two of the world's largest crypto exchanges, for allegedly breaching its rules. Both Coinbase and Binance deny the SEC's allegations and have pledged to vigorously defend themselves in court. The Coinbase and Binance suits this week expand that list to include some commonly traded tokens, such as Solana, Cardano and Polygon. While big crypto companies can afford to fight the SEC, smaller companies have filed for bankruptcy following SEC enforcement actions, including crypto exchange Beaxy. "I think if there's a real value in these crypto tokens, then compliance will build trust and the business model might change," he said.

Coinbase stock had already fallen 9% on Monday, after the SEC unveiled charges against rival crypto exchange Binance and its founder Changpeng Zhao. Coinbase's flagship prime brokerage, exchange and staking programs violate securities laws, the regulator alleged in its complaint. The SEC has alleged that at least 13 crypto assets available to Coinbase customers were considered "crypto asset securities" by the regulator. Coinbase's institutional service, Prime, its retail exchange product, and its self-custody Wallet service all offered one or more crypto asset security, the SEC said in its complaint. Coinbase's staking program was also identified as a investment contract and as an unregistered security: The SEC had already taken similar action to force the closure of crypto exchange Kraken's staking service.
