(Reuters) - Russian forces have foiled several attempts by Ukrainian units to cross the Dnipro River in the southern Kherson region over the past day, Russia's defence ministry said on Sunday. According to the ministry, Ukrainian "sabotage and reconnaissance" teams were stopped while trying to cross the river near the villages of Pridniprovske, Tiahynka and Krynky. Russia also said it had destroyed Ukrainian personnel, water-crossing equipment and vehicles near the village of Stanislav. On Friday the Institute for the Study of War, a U.S. research group, said Ukrainian forces appeared to have broken through on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River in Kherson. Ukraine recaptured parts of the Kherson region late last year after months of Russian occupation.

REUTERS/Yevhen Titov/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsKYIV, Oct 19 (Reuters) - Kyiv's forces have made some headway against Russian forces in southern Ukraine but face new Russian attacks around the eastern town of Avdiivka, the Ukrainian military said on Thursday. Stupun told Ukrainian television the southern advance was still difficult because of Russian minefields and heavily fortified defences. When Ukrainian troops recaptured parts of the Kherson region last year, Russian forces pulled out of its biggest city, also called Kherson. Making progress against Russian troops has also been hard on the eastern front, where the Ukrainian military said its forces were under fire near the towns of Kupiansk and Avdiivka.

Russian forces subjected Avdiivka to fierce attacks last week, but the shelling had tapered off in the last few days. Kupiansk was recaptured by Ukrainian troops late last year in a lighting advance through the country's northeast, but Russian forces have stepped up attacks in a bid to retake it. Zaluzhniy said Ukrainian forces around Kupiansk were "maintaining their defence in the most difficult of conditions". Russia's accounts of the fighting said its forces had destroyed a command point near Avdiivka and repelled 11 Ukrainian attacks near Kupiansk. A Ukrainian official said his country is up to nine months behind in its pushback against Russia. Mykhailo Podolyak told Channel 24 that Western approvals delayed weapons by three to four months. AdvertisementAdvertisementA top advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the country's military efforts against Russia are six to nine months behind schedule because of delays in Western weapons deliveries in the fall of 2022. "If Ukraine had received weapons faster, we could have defended ourselves better and launched a counterattack," Mykhailo Podolyak told Ukrainian Channel 24 news outlet, per the Kyiv Post . Weapon deliveries to Ukraine were delayed by three to four months due to the logistics and approvals of Western nations, Podolyak said, which "seriously" hampered its defense capability.

A Russian commander was removed after outraged military bloggers amplified his failed leadership. Russian military bloggers amplified the "significant losses due to inadequate artillery support and poor leadership in the Kherson direction," triggering the removal of the disgraced commander claimed the bloggers, per the ISW. A Russian brigade officially has at least 2,000 soldiers, and the commander holds the rank of colonel. The ISW wrote that the removal of the commander suggests that Russian ultranationalist outrage may still have influence over Russian military command despite an overall decline following the rebellion by Wagner mercenaries in June.

CNN —The general leading Ukraine’s counteroffensive along the southern front line says his forces have broken through in Verbove – and predicts an even bigger breakthrough to come. CNN reported earlier this week that the Ukrainian forces were still some 20 kilometers from Tokmak, struggling to break through the multiple layers of Russian defenses. “But the actions of our fighters force them to slowly pull back when they face our assault squads.”The general conceded that for the counteroffensive to be a success, Ukrainian forces need to at least reach the city of Tokmak.

Russian forces wound up bombing their own occupied territory in Ukraine in a botched attack Friday, Ukrainian officials alleged. Ukraine filled a tank with explosives and sent it toward Russian positions, a brigade said. Turning tanks into huge bombs is a tactic Russia has been using in Ukraine. The driver said he knew it would be "instant death" if the tank was hit and the explosives went off. The brigade said it used a captured Russian tank to make the explosive — specifically a decades-old T-62 it took earlier in the war. The spokesman, Yaroslav Halas, said a Ukrainian tank driver had to drive the explosive-filled tank most of the way to its target.
