WASHINGTON, July 26 (Reuters) - U.S. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell briefly interrupted his remarks to reporters on Wednesday and walked away before rejoining the press conference, a Reuters witness reported. The 81-year-old lawmaker began his scheduled remarks but halted abruptly, before he was briefly escorted away from the podium. He returned and took reporters' questions, saying, "I'm fine," before addressing other topics. He also suffered a minor rib fracture and was later moved to a rehabilitation facility. Most importantly for Trump and the House Republicans doing his bidding, it could distract from the legal storm around the former president. After only one presidential impeachment in the first two centuries of US history, Biden’s would be the fourth impeachment in around 25 years if House Republicans follow through. The document contained no proof of the allegations or any evidence Biden took part in his son’s work for the firm. McCarthy had for months deflected calls for the impeachment of Biden from the most radical members of his conference. McCarthy insisted on Tuesday that he was only contemplating an impeachment inquiry – rather than a full-scale drive to an impeachment vote – in the House.

CNN —Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters that he’s “fine,” after freezing during a news conference on Wednesday. McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, stopped speaking in the middle of remarks at his regularly scheduled weekly news conference on Capitol Hill. After a 30-second pause, his colleagues crowded around to see if he was OK and asked him how he felt. GOP Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming was seen gripping McConnell’s arm and whispered to him, “Hey Mitch, anything else you want to say? McConnell, asked by CNN what happened and if it is related to his fall earlier this year, said “No, I’m fine,” and then moved on to other reporters.

Chris Christie's presidential campaign will report raising $1.65 million in the second quarter, which included the former New Jersey governor's first 25 days in the 2024 campaign. “In 25 days, the Christie campaign is building a strong foundation with small-dollar donors, industry leaders and familiar faces in the Republican Party,” said adviser Maria Comella. In addition, the super PAC aligned with Christie, Tell It Like It Is PAC, said it raised nearly $5.9 million between the former governor's campaign announcement on June 6 and the close of the second quarter on June 30. The Christie campaign also highlighted a number of notable donors who have given support so far, including several — former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour and Kentucky Republican donors Kelly and Joe Craft — who have also given support to former Vice President Mike Pence.

House Oversight Chairman James Comer demanded more information about how cocaine got into the White House. He wants the Secret Service to speak to his committee's staff. He also demanded that the Secret Service tell his panel more about its probe to get to the bottom of what occurred. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre previously deferred to the Secret Service, expressing confidence that the agency responsible for the White House security would "get to the bottom of" what happened. The Kentucky Republican requested that the Secret Service provide a briefing to committee staff by July 14, exactly a week from Friday.

They include:— A war of words between Ukraine and Russia over the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of readying a bomb attack. The back-and-forth is raising fears of another alarming new dimension to a war already marred by alleged war crimes and terrible suffering among civilians. In response, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that the potential for “sabotage” by Ukraine at the plant was high. Given Russia’s previous nuclear rhetoric and fog of war misinformation, many Western observers are likely to give Zelensky the benefit of the doubt. Zelensky argued in the interview that the uprising exposed splits inside Russia over the war and an erosion of Russians’ positions.

CNN —The US House of Representatives on Wednesday voted to censure Rep. Adam Schiff, a key lawmaker in Democrats’ congressional investigations into former President Donald Trump during his presidency. As part of the censure procedure, Schiff stood in the well of the House floor, while House Speaker Kevin McCarthy repeatedly tried to read a brief rule about censure. Luna announced Tuesday she has secured the number of votes needed to censure and refer him to the House Ethics Committee. It shows you just who is behind this whole effort to distract from Trump’s legal problems is Trump,” Schiff told CNN. In that role, Schiff and the other impeachment managers detailed the House’s case for removing Trump from office at the Senate trial.

Hunter Biden arrives at Hancock Field Air National Guard Base after disembarking from Air Force One with his father, U.S. President Joe Biden, in Syracuse, New York, Feb. 4, 2023. Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, has agreed to plead guilty to two federal misdemeanor crimes of willfully failing to pay federal income taxes, a court filing Tuesday revealed. The corrupt Biden DOJ just cleared up hundreds of years of criminal liability by giving Hunter Biden a mere 'traffic ticket,'" Trump wrote. Trump later wrote on Truth Social: "People are going wild over the Hunter Biden Scam with the DOJ!" "These charges against Hunter Biden and sweetheart plea deal have no impact on the Oversight Committee's investigation.

House Republicans said on Monday that they would move this week to hold the F.B.I. director, Christopher A. Wray, in contempt of Congress, escalating their attacks on the federal law enforcement agency as they grasp for evidence of wrongdoing by President Biden. Representative James R. Comer, the Kentucky Republican who is chairman of the Oversight Committee, made the announcement after summoning F.B.I. officials to Capitol Hill for a closed-door briefing on a document containing an unverified allegation of bribery against Mr. Biden when he was vice president. But Mr. Comer complained afterward that the agency, citing concern about protecting the identity of the informant, declined to allow other members of the committee to view it.

US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) speaks during a news conference following Senate Democrat policy luncheons at the US Capitol in Washington, DC, on May 31, 2023. "The Senate will stay in session until we send a bill avoiding default to President Biden's desk, we will keep working until the job is done," Schumer, D-N.Y., said on the Senate floor at the opening of Thursday's session. WASHINGTON — Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer will attempt to fast-track a bill through the Senate on Thursday to raise the debt limit for two years and cap government spending, as the U.S. barrels toward a June 5 deadline to avert a debt default. In exchange for giving their amendments a separate vote, McConnell hopes holdouts will agree to proceed with a full Senate vote on the debt ceiling bill before the weekend. Passing the debt limit compromise bill and sending it to President Joe Biden for his signature would "soothe the country and soothe the markets," McConnell said.

Senator Mitch McConnell had a message for Americans growing increasingly worried that the economy is going to crash if the federal debt ceiling is not raised: Just chill. “Look, I think everybody needs to relax,” Mr. McConnell, the Kentucky Republican and minority leader with deep experience in debt limit showdowns, told reporters back home earlier this week. “Regardless of what may be said about the talks on a day-to-day basis, the president and the speaker will reach an agreement. It will ultimately pass on a bipartisan vote in both the House and the Senate. The country will not default.”That may be a case of easier said than done.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear was rated the most popular Democratic governor in the U.S. at the start of the year. Photo: Timothy D. Easley/Associated PressKentucky Republicans are heading to the polls Tuesday to pick the party’s nominee to take on incumbent Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear , in what is expected to be one of the most high-profile gubernatorial contests this year. The political parties will be scrutinizing the Kentucky governor’s race, along with the ones in Louisiana and Mississippi, for clues about voter sentiment ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
May 16 (Reuters) - Republican voters in Kentucky were casting ballots on Tuesday to choose their party's challenger to Democratic Governor Andy Beshear, setting up one of the most closely watched elections of the year. The winner will face Beshear, who enjoys high approval ratings despite being a Democrat in a strongly Republican state, in the November general election. Trump won Kentucky in the 2020 election against Democrat Joe Biden by more than 25 percentage points. While Cameron has Trump's official endorsement, other candidates have sought to claim the mantle of Trump's "Make America Great Again" movement. One Republican challenger, Stephen Knipper, has echoed Trump's false claims that the 2020 election was rigged and endorsed conspiracy theories about voting machines.
Mitch McConnell recently offered his most blunt remarks yet on former Fox News host Tucker Carlson. "At the risk of patting myself on the back, not many Republicans went after Tucker Carlson, but I did," McConnell told Bloomberg. "I think Carlson had developed a coterie of followers in the Congress as well as in the country that I found disturbing." "I do think the party of Ronald Reagan is coming back here," said McConnell. Despite McConnell's comments, Carlson continues to enjoy warm relations with many in the Republican Party.
I appreciate the fact that he's going to now oversee the Louisville Metro Police Department," she said. "The DOJ had a completely separate responsibility from what we did in terms of our investigation in Louisville. A year after Taylor's death, the Justice Department opened an investigation into the Louisville police department to look at whether it had a "pattern or practice" of unconstitutional policing. The findings resulted in a "consent decree," an agreement between the Justice Department and the police department on steps the force has to take to rectify those findings. No officers were directly charged with killing Taylor under Kentucky law after Cameron's office presented the case to a grand jury.
“A celebrity versus the resources versus old school,” said Scott Jennings, a Republican operative in the state, summing up the contest between the three top contenders. “Cameron is the front-runner, but there’s no doubt this race has gotten close and remains fluid,” added Mr. Jennings, who like many other Republicans has remained neutral. Indeed, many of the major forces in Kentucky Republican politics are staying on the sidelines. For Republicans, part of the challenge of defeating Mr. Beshear has to do with the G.O.P. Yet that has kept Mr. Beshear from contentious showdowns with Republicans on hot-button issues, and has let him focus on using state resources to help repair infrastructure and improve the economy.
WASHINGTON — When Senator Steve Daines, the leader of the Senate Republican campaign arm, quietly informed Senator Mitch McConnell, the minority leader, that he intended to endorse former President Donald J. Trump, Mr. McConnell was fine with the idea. Mr. McConnell, the Kentucky Republican, is not on speaking terms with the former president, having abruptly turned against him after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. Mr. Trump has publicly savaged the senator and repeatedly demeaned his wife with racist statements. But the minority leader, according to a person familiar with his thinking, believed that somebody in the Senate G.O.P. leadership ranks should have a working relationship with the party’s leading presidential contender — and it might as well be the man charged with winning back the Senate majority.
U.S. Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) waves to reporters as he arrives at the U.S. Capitol on April 17, 2023 in Washington, DC. WASHINGTON — Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Democratic Sen. John Fetterman both returned to the Capitol on Monday after significant medical absences, leaving only one senator, Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein, still away with no firm return date. Fetterman, a 53-year-old from Pennsylvania, stepped away from the Senate in February to seek inpatient treatment for clinical depression at Water Reed Army Medical Center. "I want everyone to know that depression is treatable, and treatment works," Fetterman said in a statement after return home from the hospital. The return of both Fetterman and McConnell this week after the Senate's Easter recess has served to highlight the one senator who has not returned from their prolonged medical absence: the California lawmaker Feinstein, an 89-year-old who last voted in the Senate in early February.
WASHINGTON, April 13 (Reuters) - Top U.S. Senate Republican Mitch McConnell said on Thursday that he will return to the Senate next week, more than a month after he was sidelined by a bad fall and as talks over the nation's looming $31.4 trillion debt ceiling shift to a higher gear. The 81-year-old Kentucky Republican, who is the longest-serving Senate party leader in history, tripped at a Washington dinner on March 8 and was admitted to a hospital for treatment of a concussion. McConnell was one of three lawmakers sidelined in the Senate, which Democrats control by a narrow 51-49 majority. Democratic Senator Feinstein, 89, is recuperating from a bout of shingles amid calls for her resignation from fellow Democrats. On Wednesday, Feinstein said her return to the Senate was delayed and that she would temporarily step down from the Senate Judiciary Committee.
CNN —Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell will return to the Senate on Monday following an absence as he recovered from a fall, the Kentucky Republican said Thursday. He was treated for a concussion and a rib fracture before being released to an inpatient rehabilitation facility for physical therapy. In a statement, the Senate GOP leader said that, following advice from his physical therapists, he would “spend the next few days working for Kentuckians and the Republican Conference from home.”Earlier this year, McConnell became the longest-serving party leader in Senate history. During his absence, Senate Republicans who spoke with the McConnell said he was itching to get back to the chamber. 2 Senate Republican, Minority Whip John Thune, noted that he was “anxious” to return, and Texas Sen. John Cornyn told reporters that McConnell was “chomping at the bit” to come back to the Capitol.
The lobbying comes amid a sustained effort by TikTok to play down fears raised by lawmakers who want to ban the app, which has 150 million monthly active users in the U.S. She defended the work of TikTok's team in Washington and said the company is trying to address lawmakers' privacy and safety concerns. At the furthest end of the extreme is the legislation from Hawley and Buck that simply seeks to ban TikTok outright by directing the president to block transactions with ByteDance. Hawley has not eased his campaign to ban TikTok. But after, "our phones were ringing off the hook," with the majority of callers voicing opposition to a TikTok ban.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., conducts a news conference in the U.S. Capitol after the senate luncheons on Tuesday, January 24, 2023. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said Saturday he has been released from the rehabilitation facility where he had physical therapy for a concussion caused by a fall earlier this month. McConnell was at dinner on March 8 after a hotel reception for a campaign committee aligned with him when he tripped and fell. He was released from the hospital on March 13 and, upon the advice of his doctor, moved to an inpatient rehabilitation facility for physical therapy and to continue his recovery. In January, he became the longest-serving Senate leader when the new Congress convened, breaking the previous record of 16 years.
The Senate began the process on Thursday to repeal the 1991 and 2002 Iraq War AUMFs. "It should be easy to remove," quipped Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, a supporter of repeal. "I don't want to do anything that reduces the President's ability to kill somebody like Soleimani," said Republican Sen. Rick Scott of Florida. For Sen. Paul, repealing the Iraq War AUMFs — which he called "symbolic" — isn't going far enough. The 2001 AUMF opened the door for the invasion of Afghanistan, launching the longest war in US history.
WASHINGTON, March 13 (Reuters) - U.S. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell was released from a hospital and will continue receiving treatment at a rehabilitation facility, his office said on Monday after one of Washington's most powerful figures suffered a fall last week. His continued treatment means McConnell will not be present when the Senate returns to Washington on Tuesday. A senior Senate Republican aide suggested McConnell could be in rehab for up to two weeks. As Senate minority leader, McConnell has taken a back seat to Biden and Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on the debt ceiling issue. McConnell served as Senate majority leader from 2015 to 2021 and as Senate minority leader since then.
