In a statement to BI, Media Matters President Angelo Carusone said X's lawsuit was "frivolous" and "meant to bully X's critics into silence." A Media Matters representative did not immediately respond when asked to comment on Paxton's investigation.

The National Football League is sticking with X, formerly known as Twitter, as Elon Musk's site faces an advertiser revolt over hate speech and antisemitism on the platform. The NFL has partnered with the platform since 2013 as part of an effort to bring fans exclusive content. Last week, Musk agreed with a post on the platform accusing "Jewish communities" of pushing "hatred against whites," CNBC reported earlier this month. Earlier this month, left-leaning media watchdog site MediaMatters.org posted instances of Apple, Bravo and Oracle ads appearing next to antisemitic content on Musk's platform. X on Monday sued Media Matters over the report, coinciding with an investigation launched by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton into the watchdog site for possible fraudulent activity.

DALLAS (AP) — A Texas businessman at the center of the scandal that led to the historic impeachment of state Attorney General Ken Paxton has been charged with additional federal crimes. Paul, 36, pleaded not guilty in June to the eight counts of making false statements while seeking loans from mortgage lenders in the U.S. and Ireland. Paxton was suspended from office ahead of his impeachment trial, where he pleaded not guilty to political charges including misconduct, bribery and corruption. Neither Paxton nor Paul was called to testify at the impeachment proceeding. The federal investigation of Paxton is ongoing and he still faces a state criminal trial on securities fraud charges brought against him in 2015.

Sept 28 (Reuters) - Yelp Inc (YELP.N) is asking a federal court to stop Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton from suing it over notices telling its users that crisis pregnancy centers do not provide abortions or referrals for abortions. Crisis pregnancy centers offer pregnant women counseling while seeking to prevent them from having abortions. In August 2022, Yelp began posting a notice on crisis pregnancy centers' pages stating that they "typically provide limited medical services and may not have licensed medical professionals onsite." The company said in the complaint that it posted the notices to prevent users from being misled by crisis pregnancy centers that deliberately targeted women seeking abortions. In February, in response to a complaint by Paxton, the company changed the notices to state that crisis pregnancy centers "do not offer abortions or referrals to abortion providers."

Crisis Pregnancy Centers do not offer abortions or referrals to abortion providers.”Yelp’s complaint said its labels are based on a manual evaluation of “thousands of business pages” on its site and reflect truthful statements. The case against Ken Paxton, a nationally prominent conservative politician, was overseen by a board of managers from the state’s House, led by Republicans, and it played out at times as a contest over how much Republican politics should matter in the proceedings. The House lawmakers approached the case like a criminal trial, appointing a prominent Houston lawyer, Rusty Hardin, who methodically elicited testimony over seven days from 15 witnesses who were mostly senior aides to Mr. Paxton. In a nod to the politics looming in the background, the prosecutors also frequently sought to highlight the staunchly conservative backgrounds of the witnesses against Mr. Paxton. Part of the reason for doing so is the nature of the jury pool: The voting senators included 19 Republicans and 12 Democrats. But it also reflected efforts by the conservative wing of the party to attack the impeachment as a political plot put forward by lobbyists, RINOs — Republicans in name only — and Democrats in Austin.
