Kilauea Erupts in Hawaii With ‘Incandescent’ Glow

Kilauea, the youngest and most active volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii, erupted early Wednesday morning, officials said, sending fountains of lava spewing skyward before pooling and spreading across its summit. The U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory detected a glow in the web camera of the Kilauea summit and said the volcano began erupting around 4:44 a.m. local time. Less than an hour later, the lava created a brilliant black-and-orange web across the crater’s floor. As dawn broke, a livestream showed lava still bubbling but its surface beginning to harden. “The spreading across the floor of the crater was just totally incandescent,” Ken Hon, the scientist in charge of the observatory, said in an interview.

CNN —Three teenagers have been arrested in connection with killing and “consuming” a beloved swan in a Syracuse, New York, suburb, and stealing four young swans this week, police said. A mature female swan named Faye and her four young swans, also known as cygnets, were reported missing from the swan pond Monday, police in the village of Manlius said. The three friends, who attend the same high school, hopped over the fence surrounding the swan pond in the middle of the night, Hatter said. We will continue to have swans,” Whorrall said. David Solomon has been Goldman Sachs' CEO for over four years since succeeding Lloyd Blankfein. There's been a lot of talk about the morale at Goldman Sachs. Solomon said there were fewer "partner transitions at Goldman Sachs" in 2022 than any year "going back to 2014." Meanwhile, Solomon's expensive foray into consumer banking raised the ire of some longtime Goldman partners, as Insider has previously reported. The fresh faces among the Goldman Sachs executives who took the stage at the bank's investor day highlight the leadership changes under Solomon.
Matthew R. Reilly, a city council member and ex-chair of his local GOP in Rhode Island, has resigned. Bodycam footage of the incident shows Reilly passed out in his car with a crack pipe in his hand. "You have a crack pipe in your hand," one police officer responded, according to the bodycam footage. In the footage, Reilly, who is an attorney, said he had a relapse after 13 years of being sober following a bad divorce. Reilly, who also resigned as head of the local GOP earlier this week, did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
WSJ’s Ken Thomas breaks down how the political landscape has changed since 2020 and what challenges President Biden will face in 2024. Photo illustration: Ryan TrefesWASHINGTON—President Biden is staring down a rough month just as his re-election campaign is getting off the ground. The White House faces a series of wrenching issues that could weaken his political standing and distract from his effort to sell his accomplishments, including a clash with Republicans over raising the debt ceiling and an expected surge of migrants along the U.S. southern border as the pandemic-era Title 42 policy comes to an end May 11. The recent seizure of another failing bank could add to voters’ uncertainty about the health of the economy.
That means that unless people start having a lot more kids, the US population could eventually start to shrink — just like China's population has. While the US population has managed to avoid an outright drop, population growth reached an unprecedented low of 0.12% in 2021. One way the US could encourage more immigration is by focusing on temporary visas for specific industries that need workers. And the treatment of workers in the country on temporary visas has been a problem for decades. After all, the US is running out of options, and soon its growing people shortage is going to spell economic disaster.

Ken Potts, the oldest known survivor of the Japanese sneak attack that sunk the battleship Arizona at Pearl Harbor in 1941, taking the most lives ever lost on an American warship, died on Friday at his home in Provo, Utah, less than a week after celebrating his 102 birthday. His death was announced by the National Park Service, which administers the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, above the sunken hull where the remains of more than 900 of the 1,177 sailors and Marines who were killed in the attack are still entombed. Lou Conter, a 101-year-old Californian, is now believed to be the only living survivor among the Arizona crewmen who escaped the inferno that Sunday morning. Only 93 of those who were aboard the ship at the time lived; 242 other crew members were ashore.

The Teamsters Union has threatened a UPS strike when its contract expires in July. UPS CEO Carol Tomé has repeatedly said that a "win-win-win" is "very achievable" for the Teamsters, UPS employees at large, and the company, despite the union's spicy rhetoric. But even the threat of a UPS strike this summer, which would be the first since 1997, is already driving some UPS customers to look for alternative shipping options. Carere also suggested that FedEx is not interested in serving as a temporary solution for UPS customers. FedEx customers were alerted to the March 31 in a letter distributed earlier this month.
