NEW DELHI, March 24 (Reuters) - Apple Inc's (AAPL.O) Taiwanese supplier Pegatron Corp (4938.TW) is in talks to open a second India factory, said two sources with direct knowledge of the matter, as the U.S. tech giant's partners continue to diversify production away from China. Pegatron currently accounts for 10% of Apple's iPhone production in India on an annualised basis, research firm Counterpoint said. The talks for starting a second Pegatron facility on lease are ongoing and it will be located inside Mahindra World City near Chennai, just around where the company inaugurated the first plant in September 2022. India is the second biggest smartphone market in the world, where Apple also plans to assemble iPad tablets and AirPods. Last week, Reuters reported Foxconn has plans to build a $200 million factory in India to produce the wireless earphones for Apple after winning a contract.
March 19 (Reuters) - Coffee connoisseur Rohan Bopanna credited the special Indian blends he consumes on Tour for his success after the 43-year-old became the oldest ATP Masters 1000 champion by winning the men's doubles title on Saturday. "It's the Indian coffee that I keep having when travelling. Some days I tell Matt I maybe just practised 20 minutes, but I'd rather rest the body and be ready for our matches," Bopanna said. Really happy with that." Indian doubles great Mahesh Bhupathi hailed former playing partner Bopanna's longevity and ability to peak late in his career.

Taiwan's Foxconn, the world's largest contract electronics maker and formally called Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd, said Liu had visited India from Feb. 27 to Saturday. "My trip this week supported Foxconn's efforts to deepen partnerships, meet old friends and make new ones, and seek cooperation in new areas such as semiconductor development and electric vehicles," Liu said in a statement. Foxconn has ambitious plans to make EVs, and is also looking to make chips. He did not mention any new concrete investment plans in the country, and Foxconn has not announced any since his trip. Currently, iPhones are assembled in India by at least three of Apple's global suppliers - Foxconn and Pegatron (4938.TW) in Tamil Nadu, and Wistron in Karnataka.
Taiwan’s Foxconn has been looking to expand its operations in the South Asian giant after suffering severe supply disruptions in China last year. “India is a country with a large population,” Young Liu, the company’s chairman and CEO, said in a Saturday statement. The company, best known for making Apple (AAPL)’s iPhones, is one of the world’s biggest contract makers of electronics. India has emerged as an attractive potential alternative to China for the likes of Apple. Apple devices are currently manufactured in India by Foxconn, Wistron and Pegatron, which are all Taiwanese companies.

Foxconn , one of Apple' s largest suppliers and a major manufacturer of iPhone components, will invest around $700 million to build a new plant in India's Karnataka state, Bloomberg reported Friday. Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter, said Foxconn will build an iPhone parts plant on a 300-acre site near Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport. The effort will be one of the largest investments by Foxconn in India, Bloomberg reported. Those lockdowns prompted widespread national dissent, and videos of Foxconn employees fleeing the company's iPhone manufacturing facility spread widely on Western social media. Foxconn already maintains a presence in India through a Chennai-proximate factory in eastern India.
NEW DELHI, Feb 28 (Reuters) - New Delhi city authorities have warned Uber (UBER.N) and its rival Ola for allegedly violating local transport rules by providing two-wheeler bike taxis, a senior government official told Reuters on Tuesday. As of Tuesday, bike taxis continue to be available for booking on Uber and Ola apps in New Delhi. Uber says in 2022, more than 1.9 million trips took place to and from metro rail stations in Delhi on Uber Moto, its bike taxi service. For drivers of bike taxis, the penalties could be as high as 10,000 rupees ($121) and a jail term of up to one year. The enforcement of rules for bike taxis by Delhi government follows similar moves by Maharashtra and Karnataka states.
Lower sugar output could prevent the world's second-biggest exporter from allowing additional exports, potentially supporting global prices , , and helping rivals Brazil and Thailand to increase their shipments. Another global trade house has reduced output estimate to 32.4 million tonnes, anticipating a big drop in Maharashtra's production to around 11.3 million tonnes. Maharashtra's sugar cane commissioner was expecting the state to produce 12.8 million tonnes. "The cane crop is just 10 months old, but started flowering last month and losing weight," Avinash Thombare, a sugar cane grower from Satara district, said, as he showed the crop with white flowers. India has allowed sugar mills to export only 6.1 million tonnes of the sweetener in the current season, down from the record 11 million tonnes exported in the previous season.

And India is poised to be one of the best alternatives," said Sasikumar Gendham, managing director, Salcomp Manufacturing India. Salcomp, a major supplier of chargers to the iPhone maker, is also setting up a housing complex with entertainment and education for about 15,000 people, said Gendham. Foxconn (2317.TW), another Apple supplier, also plans to quadruple the workforce at its iPhone factory in India over two years, Reuters had reported last year.
Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal said Apple was already making between 5% and 7% of its products in India. His comments come at a time when Foxconn (HNHPF), a top Apple supplier, is looking to expand its operations in India after suffering severe supply disruptions in China. For years, Apple had relied on a vast manufacturing network in China to mass produce iPhones, iPads and other popular products. China headaches mountBut the world’s most valuable company posted shockingly weak earnings this month, partly because of its recent problems in China. According to Counterpoint’s Pathak, India accounts for 16% of the global smartphone production, while China constitutes 70%.
India has allowed sugar mills to export only 6.1 million tonnes of the sweetener in the current season and, out of that, mills have already contracted to export 5.7 million tonnes. Sugar mills in Maharashtra were operational until mid-June in 2021/22 as they were struggling to harvest a record crop. LOWER EXPORTSIn 2021/22 Maharashtra produced a record 13.7 million tonnes, higher than the initial estimate of 11.2 million tonnes, allowing New Delhi to export a record 11.2 million tonnes. As the sugar exports quota was nearly exhausted, the Indian Sugar Mills Association and other trade bodies were requesting the government to allow additional exports of up to 4 million tonnes. India mainly exports sugar to Indonesia, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Sudan, Somalia and the United Arab Emirates.
The law minister said in the upper house of the parliament in December that 165 high court judges were appointed last year against 331 vacancies. A bill passed by parliament to change the process was rejected by the Supreme Court in 2015. The dispute has exacerbated a shortage of high court judges and a backlog of cases. Several lawyers and retired judges told Reuters they believed the government was seeking to influence the judiciary, which would be unconstitutional. When asked about Naik's case, a senior law ministry official said the government's decisions about appointments are confidential.

In response to the incident, Air India is reconsidering its policy of serving alcoholic beverages, Mirror Now reported. BENGALURU, Dec 22 (Reuters) - The Indian government will focus on fiscal consolidation in its Feb. 1 budget, the last full one before a 2024 general election, according to a Reuters poll of economists who said slowing economic growth would limit it from spending more. That will likely limit the government's ability to provide relief to households and businesses facing an uneven recovery from the pandemic. Economic growth likely slowed sharply to an annual 4.6% in the December quarter from 6.3% reported in the preceding quarter. Sitharaman's expected fiscal prudence coincides with state assembly elections in Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan in 2023, which would likely discourage the government from making deep cuts to social welfare. Among those who expect it to be a more populist budget, some said the government would announce new subsidies, an increase in healthcare and rural spending to boost jobs.
NEW DELHI, Dec 16 (Reuters) - An Indian court has quashed the income tax department's block on China-based Xiaomi Corp's (1810.HK) fixed deposits worth 37 billion rupees ($447.65 million), two people familiar with court proceedings said on Friday. Xiaomi and the income tax department did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. Indian tax officials froze the funds in February as part of an investigation into alleged tax evasion. read moreThe investigation concerned allegations that the Chinese company purchased smartphones from its contract manufacturers at inflated costs in India, allowing it to record a smaller profit by selling them to customers and evading corporate income taxes, Reuters reported in May. A court is yet to pronounce a decision on the case following Xiaomi's challenge.

SPDR Gold Trust , the world's largest gold-backed exchange-traded fund, said its holdings rose 0.3% to 913.88 tons on Thursday. The renegotiations and defaults by mills in India, the world's second biggest sugar exporter, could support global prices . Mills started selling sugar to trade houses in late August and signed deals to supply around 2 million tonnes of sugar for export even before New Delhi approved an export quota of 6 million tonnes earlier this month. They are threatening to default unless buyers are ready to renegotiate at higher prices," said a Mumbai-based dealer with a global trade house. The defaults by mills in Maharashtra are forcing trade houses to make purchases from mills in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, dealers said. Indian mills have so far signed contracts to export 4 million tonnes of sugar during November to February, they said.
