"His work could really make or break any designers," added Seigel. The auction house estimates the lots will fetch more than a million dollars, funds that will go to two Baptist churches that played a key role in Talley's life. Talley, a former U.S. Vogue editor at large and creative director, died on Jan. 18, 2022, at age 73.

A velvet bustier evening dress, from Saint Laurent's 1984-1985 haute couture collection, is also up for sale. And you know, all haute couture clients, they said that the Saint Laurent outfits are the most comfortable and the more feminine and sensual," de Foresta said. The Parisian owner also wore pieces by Christian Lacroix, Gianfranco Ferre for Dior and Valentino, and most of the couture pieces were bought in the 1980s and 1990s. Haute Couture Fashion Week, which wraps up on Thursday, allows an elite club of top-end designers to show off elaborate creations, which are not mass-produced for stores but tend to be sold to private clients.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced on Friday next year's Met Gala theme: a celebration of the works of the late German designer Karl Lagerfeld. It is followed by the institute's annual spring exhibition, this year titled "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty," which will be on view from May 5 through July 16. Lagerfeld spent the majority of his life in the fashion world, with his first designs debuting in the 1950s. This past year's theme, "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion," focused on American fashion throughout the decades. Funding for this year's event comes from Chanel and Fendi, as well as from Karl Lagerfeld and Condé Nast.
