Why do we buy merch, or shy away from it? What does the merch you wear say about who you are, what you believe in? Carrying the bag in your own city seemed too boosterish, too earnest for a New Yorker, whereas outside the city, the local merch telegraphs your hometown pride and N.Y.C. Once you leave the place, the merch becomes a souvenir, a nostalgic keepsake. Debating the laws of merch is a diversion, an amusing exercise in questioning our own pieties.

"Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" broke a concert-film box-office record on its opening weekend. The movie pulled in $95 million to $97 million worth of ticket sales, AMC Theatres said. Swift’s tour has given the US economy a big boost in 2023, with even the Federal Reserve noticing its impact. "The Eras Tour" could also break records for the strongest October debut for any film. Its currently neck-and-neck with "Joker", which pulled in $96.2 million worth of ticket sales on its opening weekend back in 2019.

LOS ANGELES, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Pop singer Taylor Swift ruled movie box offices over the weekend as her concert film transformed darkened theaters into dance floors and hauled in an estimated $126 million-plus around the world. Moviegoers dressed in concert T-shirts and sequins for screenings of "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour." That would surpass the $73 million that Justin Bieber's 2011 release "Never Say Never," the current record holder for a concert film, collected over its entire run. "This is a superstar debut," Jeff Bock, senior box office analyst at Exhibitor Relations Co., said of Swift's film. In its opening weekend, the pop singer’s concert film, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” raked in between $95 and $97 million in the box office in the United States and Canada, movie theater chain AMC said Sunday. “I thought I had seen everything with the Barbenheimer phenomenon,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, which tracks box office numbers. The movie, called "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour", set the record for a concert film, easily surpassing the $29.5 million collected by "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never" over its first three days in 2011. The unparalleled enthusiasm helped propel “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” to a massive, first place debut between $95 million and $97 million in North America, AMC Theatres said Sunday. The two superstars posed together at the premiere of “The Eras Tour” earlier this week in Los Angeles. Political Cartoons View All 1211 Images“The Eras Tour,” directed by Sam Wrench, is not just playing on AMC screens either. Elizabeth Frank, the executive vice president of worldwide programming and chief content officer for AMC Theatres, said in a statement that they are grateful to Taylor Swift. The concert film offered fans both better seats and a much more affordable way to see the show for the first or fifth time.

But “The Eras Tour” heralds something new and potentially game-changing in the movie industry. BTS earlier this year released a concert film, with higher ticket prices and limited showtimes. But “The Eras Tour” could be the start of an expansion of what, exactly, a movie theater can be. The movie, directed by Sam Wrench, would be a way for millions more to experience the Eras Tour. “The industry needs it and, frankly, so do consumers.”Meanwhile, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” is poised to become the biggest concert film ever in about two days of release.
