Americans began to grapple with a nationwide epidemic of child abuse in Catholic parishes and other religious organizations in 2002, after a landmark Boston Globe investigation revealed a pattern of misdeeds and cover-ups in Boston that went back decades. Ten years earlier, Sinead O’Connor became a pop culture pariah in the United States for an on-air protest intended to raise awareness of the same problem. The backlash to her actions — tearing up a picture of Pope John Paul II on “Saturday Night Live” and then shouting “Fight the real enemy!” — was swift. Prominent Americans, including celebrities like Madonna and Joe Pesci, denounced her. Catholic leaders were outraged, including some who were forced to resign years later for their roles in covering up abuse.

CNN —Following the announcement of Sinéad O’Connor’s death aged 56 Wednesday, her life and music with all their complexities and convulsions have been put back into the spotlight. At first, the act drew widespread condemnation, but in subsequent years this eventually gave way to admiration as the Catholic Church acknowledged and apologized for the sexual abuse perpetrated by members of the clergy, often toward children. Ripping up that photo of the pope defined her career in a “beautiful f**king way,” she told the Guardian in 2021. Joe Pesci hosted the show the following week and in his opening monologue said that O’Connor “was very lucky it wasn’t my show. As the years passed, however, the public’s stance toward O’Connor softened as sexual abuse by members of the clergy became a matter of record.

CNN —Max Verstappen helped Red Bull make history on Sunday as the Dutchman won the Hungarian Grand Prix with ease to secure his team a record 12th successive win. Red Bull have won every race this season (11) and, unsurprisingly, lead the constructors’ championship by a handsome margin – 208 points ahead of Mercedes in second. Including the win achieved on the final race of last season, the team surpasses McLaren’s long-standing record of 11 straight wins, set in 1988. Verstappen celebrates a seventh straight win. Joe Portlock/Formula 1/Getty Images“For the team, 12 wins in a row is just incredible,” Verstappen said on Sky Sports.

If the U.S. economy has a "soft landing" - no recession this year with inflation near target, and only a mild downturn next year with unemployment staying historically low - Jerome Powell may lay claim to being the most successful Fed chief in history. Powell was frequently on the receiving end of public lashings from his then boss - "Clueless," "horrendous lack of vision" and "pathetic!" "Kudos to Powell if he can achieve a soft landing. Greenspan, dubbed 'the Maestro' by his admirers, was Fed chief from 1987 to 2006. Not only that, his 36% rating was the lowest of any Fed chair since the survey series began in 2001.

Don’t just spend your time. We are born rich in time and then spend down our fortunes over the years. It may not grow like money in a bank account, but there are ways to get the most out of it. Researchers suggest thinking of time as something we invest—rather than "spend"—using our precious hours now for fulfillment and meaning that our future selves can draw from. Fran Caballero

It’s a cozy arrangement for all involved, and marks another step in private lenders’ encroachment into traditional financiers’ turf. KKR will now purchase and hold up to 3 billion euros of PayPal’s BNPL loans, originated in five European countries and typically a few months in duration. KKR can pump up its returns using leverage – the deal is funded partly from loans made by its own credit funds. Follow @JMAGuilford on TwitterCONTEXT NEWSFinancial technology firm PayPal announced on June 20 that it had signed a multi-year 3 billion euro replenishing loan agreement with asset manager KKR. The deal will see KKR purchase up to 40 billion euros of PayPal’s short-term buy-now-pay-later loans now and in the future.

But the bots using ChatGPT began to rapidly improve, and SirPugger realized the automated players would soon become almost indistinguishable from human players. In some cases, these AI-powered bots seemed to commiserate with real players, even complaining about the overabundance of bots. At the same time, bot scripts could eventually enhance rather than detract from the social aspects of online games. Online shooters like "PUBG" and "Fortnite" already populate their multiplayer lobbies with AI bots, but the social emphasis of MMOs means that they are uniquely well positioned to reap the prospective benefits of chatbot integration. Worlds would appear to become more populous, and though "real" players might still be cheated out of leaderboard slots, they wouldn't necessarily know it.

A new study surveyed 1,440 creators about the time and costs that go into building their businesses. It takes influencers 18 months on average to be able to fully support themselves, the study found. The Tilt, a newsletter for professional content creators, surveyed 1,440 creators during the months of February and March as part of its third annual Content Entrepreneur Benchmark Research study. The study found that, on average, it took the creators 4.9 months to earn their first dollar, 12.7 months to turn content creation into a full-time business, and 18.4 months to be able to fully support themselves from content creation. It also took about 18.8 months for creators to be able to hire help for the first time.
