US appeals court upholds Illinois assault weapons ban
  + stars: | 2023-11-04 | by ( Steve Gorman | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
REUTERS/Cheney Orr/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 3 (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Friday upheld an Illinois state ban on assault-style weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines enacted after a 2022 mass shooting in Chicago's Highland Park suburb that left seven people dead and dozens more wounded. The Democratic-backed state measure bans the sale and distribution of many kinds of high-powered semiautomatic "assault weapons," including AK-47 and AR-15 rifles, and large-capacity magazines. In one notable aspect of its reasoning in upholding the Illinois law, the appellate panel cited a U.S. Supreme Court opinion last year that struck down New York state's limits on carrying concealed handguns outside the home. In August, a divided Illinois Supreme Court upheld the assault weapons ban in a separate case brought at the state court level, rejecting arguments that the law violated the state constitution by not applying the ban equally to all citizens. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that California's assault weapons ban would remain in force while the state attorney general appealed a lower-court decision declaring that 30-year-old measure unconstitutional.

LOS ANGELES, Nov 3 (Reuters) - Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes said he is eager to suit up for Team USA when flag football makes its Olympic debut at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. "I definitely want to but I've seen some of those guys play the flag football and they are a little faster than I am," Mahomes told reporters on Friday in Munich, where the Chiefs are set to play the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Flag football looks similar to tackle football, with passing and receiving, but requires little protective equipment, with play stopping when a defender pulls a cloth flag from the waist of an opponent. With the backing of the NFL it was among five sports added to the program for the 2028 Games alongside cricket, lacrosse, squash and baseball-softball. Flag football's governing body, the International Federation of American Football, has the final say over who makes the cut to play for their country.

RISC-V, pronounced "risk five," is a free open-source technology that competes with costly proprietary technology from British semiconductor and software design company Arm Holdings (O9Ty.F), and Intel Corp (INTC.O). It can be used as a key part of anything from a smartphone chip to advanced processors for artificial intelligence. U.S. firms such as Qualcomm (QCOM.O) and Alphabet's (GOOGL.O) Google have embraced RISC-V, but so too have many Chinese companies. Reuters last month reported that at least four influential U.S. lawmakers view Chinese use of the technology as a potential national security threat because RISC-V is not captured by the sweeping export controls the U.S. has imposed on sending chip technology to China. They also asked the Biden administration about how it might apply an existing executive order to require U.S. companies to get an export license before working with Chinese companies on RISC-V technology.

Stellantis declined to comment, saying it would wait for workers to vote first before discussing the deal. Stellantis will also offer $50,000 buyouts in 2024 and 2026 to UAW production workers, allowing it to cut costs by hiring fresh workers who start at lower wages. The UAW said the Stellantis investment commitments total about $19 billion, but that includes some previously announced plans. Stellantis has slightly longer than rival Ford to convert current temporary workers to permanent employees. That is on top of the $5,000 bonus hourly workers will get on ratification along with an 11% immediate pay hike.

He said the UAW's new contracts were so good they had even led to nonunion auto workers getting raises. "If (Toyota workers) come calling, which they have, we're going to educate them and be there for them," Smith told Reuters. The Sydney-based financial conglomerate has not had a steeper first-half profit drop in more than a decade. Macquarie said the asset management division's income should rebound in the second half to about the A$940 million it reported in the same period last year. SummaryCompanies Funding round led by Just ClimateMetal-light motor 10% to 65% more efficientAims to produce 150,000 motors by end of 2024SAN FRANCISCO, Nov 1 (Reuters) - Climate technology firm Infinitum, which develops high efficiency industrial motors, said on Wednesday it had raised $185 million in a funding round led by venture capital investor Just Climate. The Infinitum motors can also work at variable speeds, helping account for a drop in energy consumption of about 10% to 65%, and the motors are relatively easy to fix and recycle, Schuler said. Just Climate Investment Partner Benoit Grobon said about half of the power from electric generation in the world goes into electric motors, and increasing their efficiency would save a lot of energy. Moreover, electric motors used as generators could make windmills more efficient and improve the range of electric cars, he added. "AustralianSuper believes Origin has a highly strategic portfolio of assets to participate in, and benefit from, the energy transition," a spokesperson said. Origin shares plunged as much as 5.6% to A$8.565 in high-volume trading following the news, as AustralianSuper's 13.68% holding could scupper a deal that requires approval from 75% of the register if not all investors vote. Should the deal fail at the shareholder vote scheduled for Nov. 23, a revised agreement allows the consortium to make a subsequent off-market bid if it buys 5% or more of Origin shares. "If it gets voted down, Brookfield aren't obligated to come back with an off-market takeover offer, but they may be inclined to," he said. Northern province Hebei launched an anti-pollution emergency response, listing traffic safety controls for when necessary including suspending flight takeoffs and landings, temporarily closing highways and suspending ferries, China's meteorological bureau said in a notice. Authorities also warned road users to stop in safe parking areas when conditions required and asked people to stay indoors. Beijing said it would implement traffic control measures if the capital activates its highest air pollution warning.
