India signals it will continue to buy oil from Russia

India's Minister of Foreign Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar gestures as he answers questions during an interview in Brussels on February 17, 2020. India will prioritize its own energy needs and continue to buy oil from Russia, its foreign minister signaled Monday, as Western governments press Moscow with a price cap to squeeze its earnings from oil exports. Minister of External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar made the comments after holding talks with his visiting German counterpart, Annalena Baerbock, in which they discussed bilateral relations and Russia's war in Ukraine. Jaishankar said it isn't right for European countries to prioritize their energy needs but "ask India to do something else." India has so far not committed to the $60-per-barrel price cap on Russian oil set by the Group of Seven major industrialized countries and European Union that is expected to come into effect Monday.
Russia has been India's largest supplier of military equipment for decades and it is the fourth-biggest market for Indian pharmaceuticals. "We have given Russians a set of products which we believe we are very competitive in and which we feel should be getting access to the Russian market," Jaishankar told reporters in a briefing with his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock, who is on a visit to India. I think a large part of it would be determined by the market," Jaishankar added. During a visit to Moscow in November, Jaishankar said India needed to boost exports to Russia to balance bilateral trade that is now tilted towards Russia. [1/3] Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar attend a news conference following their talks in Moscow, Russia, November 8, 2022. India is keen to boost trade in this way, said the source, as it tries to narrow a ballooning trade deficit with Russia. During the Moscow visit, Jaishankar said India needed to boost exports to Russia to balance bilateral trade that is now tilted towards Russia. The list of items from Russia, which runs to nearly 14 pages, includes car engine parts like pistons, oil pumps and ignition coils. India is hoping to boost its exports to nearly $10 billion over coming months with Russia's list of requests, according to the government source.
India can buy as much Russian oil as it likes, US Treasury Secretary Yellen told Reuters. Indian oil companies can purchase oil at any price they want, as long as they don't use Western services like insurance, finance, and maritime services which are bound by the price cap, Yellen said, per Reuters. Indian foreign minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said last week his country will continue buying discounted Russian oil as the relationship has worked to India's benefit. Despite India's proclivities towards Russian oil, Yellen appeared to be confident that Indian wouldn't find many substitutes for Western insurance, finance and maritime services. Russian oil "is going to be selling at bargain prices and we're happy to have India get that bargain or Africa or China.
India's oil imports from No. India will continue to buy Russian oil as it benefits the South Asian nation, foreign minister S. Jaishankar said on Tuesday, days ahead of the U.S. Treasury Secretary's visit to New Delhi for talks on issues including a cap on Russian oil prices. West African oil is priced against Atlantic Basin benchmark dated Brent, whose values have narrowed against Middle East marker Dubai. In contrast, African grades accounted for about 12% of India's imports, rising from 7%. His trip comes as U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen visits New Delhi this week to hold talks with Indian officials, including possibly on capping Russian oil prices. India has become Russia's largest oil customer after China, as its refiners snap up discounted cargoes shunned by Western buyers. Russia's share of India's oil imports surged to an all-time high of 23% in September, from just about 2% before the invasion. [1/3] British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly speaks during an interview with Reuters at the residence of British High Commissioner in New Delhi, India, October 29, 2022. And it's incredibly important that we remember that an extensive free trade agreement like the one we're negotiating, it's never going to be simple, but it's an incredibly important vehicle to build on our already strong relationship and to make it really future-focused." Previous sticking points included a steep import duty on British whiskey for sale in India. India and Russia have close defence ties and India has become a big buyer of Russian oil since the Ukraine war started. "I don't think it would be right for me as a British politician to dictate policy to another country," he said.
UN wants India to mobilise G20 to help debt-stressed countries

NEW DELHI, Oct 19 (Reuters) - U.N. chief Antonio Guterres on Wednesday sought India's support in mobilising G20 nations to help out developing countries saddled with debt, with three of India's neighbours already seeking IMF loans as their economies struggle. India takes over the G20 presidency from Indonesia for a year from Dec 1. "I count on India’s support in mobilising G20 countries around debt relief," Guterres told the students and faculty of the Indian Institute of Technology in Mumbai. "Many developing countries are at or near debt distress and require multilateral action, including the expansion and extension of the G20 Debt Service Suspension Initiative." He said G20 countries were responsible for 80% of global emissions and must take the lead in cutting those.
Logo of the Maiden Pharmaceuticals Ltd. company is seen on a board outside their office in New Delhi, India, October 6, 2022. The matter "is being seriously investigated by appropriate authorities," India's foreign minister S Jaishankar said in a tweet. Known as a "pharmacy of the world", India supplies 45% of all generic medicines to Africa. The WHO issued a medical product alert last week asking regulators to remove Maiden goods from the market. The U.N. health agency said that laboratory analysis of four Maiden products - Promethazine Oral Solution, Kofexmalin Baby Cough Syrup, Makoff Baby Cough Syrup and Magrip N Cold Syrup - had "unacceptable" amounts of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol, which can be toxic and cause acute kidney injury.
India's foreign minister followed up last week at the U.N. Security Council, describing the trajectory of the Ukraine war as "very concerning" and the risk of a nuclear escalation as of "particular anxiety". Moreover, India is worried the war is pushing Russia closer to China, which has fraught relations with New Delhi, the analysts said. "This is countering a narrative that India and China are both doing the same thing – that China is supporting Russia and India, by sitting on the fence, is also supporting Russia," Raghavan told Reuters. India and Russia have had deep relations for decades: Russia accounted for $5.51 billion of the $12.4 billion that India spent between 2018 and 2021 on arms imports. "As the Ukraine conflict continues to rage, we are often asked whose side are we on," he said, again without mentioning Russia.
Stefani Reynolds/Pool via REUTERSNEW DELHI, Sept 22 (Reuters) - India told the U.N. Security Council on Thursday that the trajectory of the Ukraine conflict was very concerning and that the outlook was more so, as New Delhi sharpened its calls for peace. As long-term trade and defence partners, India and Russia have sided with each other for years. India has stepped up purchases of oil and coal from Russia since the Ukraine war began in February. loadingPutin ordered Russia's first wartime mobilisation since World War Two on Wednesday and threatened to use nuclear weapons to defend his country. The United States has been trying to wean India off its decades-old heavy reliance on Russia for military equipment.
